  1. Spahnie attended the unveiling of his Turner Field statue a few months before his death and spoke. I don't know if the number retirement was done at the same time or previously. IMO the numbers belong to the franchise, the stadium and grounds to the city. There's a statue of Ty Cobb at Turner Field, him being a Georgia boy, but the Braves didn't retire his number. The MP stadium district could do the same with Al Simmons, imo, and it would be fine with me. Eddie played 1 year with Atlanta and managed them for about 2 full seasons over 3 years. Did you get a chance to head out to Lloyd Street Grounds at all that year? I heard they had free horse carriage parking. The catch was you had to clean up after your horse, so, being the modern, early adopters that we were, we took the streetcar.
  2. I don't find the Braves throwback silly, it's a tribute to Milwaukee's baseball history. I just wish they wouldn't do it against the Braves. All teams have or have had throwbacks, including Negro leagues. Miller Park is Milwaukee's baseball stadium, not the Brewers, inside or out.
  3. I grew up in the 50s and 60s idolizing Hank, Eddie and Spahnie and I'm glad Atlanta has honored them. I'm glad the Brewers retired Hanks number since he played for the Brewers and don't think it would be right to retire Eddie's and Spahnies. I was there the night they were added to the walk of fame and it was great, appropriate and along with the Braves memorial at Miller Park, enough. JB, I wish you'd stop trying to talk for all us oldfarts and just express your own feeling on these sorts of things.
  4. I'm sure it did but the hard drive was formatted, there's nothing on it right now. You didn't get a cd for reinstalling XP? Or did you just buy this from someone else without a disk?
  5. Not as old as my 4100. Yours didn't come with XP? Looks like you can go up to 2GB. Try the configurators. Lots of choices but Dells are fussy. I'd trust what crucial recommends. At Newegg I'd read the reviews first to see if anyone has put the one(s) you want in a 2400.
  6. Yeah, I went from 256 to 512 before installing xp. It runs fine for word, excel, internet etc. Newegg has a configurator too. I wound up buying crucial memory from newegg because it was a few bucks cheaper there. Pay attention to what crucial says the max memory is for your system or visit the maker's website. Some brands such as Dell are fussy about memory so going for the cheap stuff may not work out. It's easy to do, just don't work in a carpeted area and do touch metal on the case before working inside. If you post the brand and model you may get more help.
  7. I just did this a month ago on an old machine for the same reasons. Got XP Home OEM from Newegg. The other thing with OEM is once you install it, it's tied to that machine just like when you get a new system with the OS pre-installed. You can't install it on a different machine later or sell it to someone else once you're done with it like you can with the more expensive retail version.
  8. That's what the Brewers offered and he had no choice other than not to play.
  9. Or use software that will catch or suggest things like the EIC. Taxact standard is free but it doesn't look like you can download past years of the free version. I wouldn't recommend it for your more complicated situation for 2008 but I've used it for 7 or 8 years and would recommend it for W-2, interest, dividends, capital gains, itemizing situations. Whether someone uses a CPA or software, it's in their best interest to develop at least a basic understanding of how the tax system works.
  10. Laura, were you sitting at the computer all night waiting for the 12 hours to pass? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  11. If he uses a provided recovery, e.g. a hidden recovery partition, to return it to how he got it, it will reinstall the AOL stuff etc. But a clean install from an XP reinstall disk shouldn't, at least my Dell ME reinstall disk didn't.
  12. If you go to this link, and click on technical support there should be info on reinstalling specific to your laptop. Enter your service tag(click on the link on how to find the service tag). If you click on drivers and downloads from that link and enter your service tag you should be able to find any driver updates from what are on the driver disk you should have. If your XP disk doesn't include SP2, that's the first thing I'd do via windows update after the XP install and before reinstalling any applications.
  13. Hey, I'm just one of those old people who can't handle technology but I just added some memory and formatted my 8 year old Dell 4100 and installed XP on it to replace ME and it's like a new machine. It's not that hard and there are step by step instructions on the internet I can point you to. Is there any doc with the Dell disks? Or perhaps under help and support from the start menu? Another question is do you have installation media or files for all the applications and drivers you will need to reinstall? It can be a little time consuming. I followed these instructions. They're for a desktop and a retail version of XP but should work for a laptop. I don't think you'll have to reactivate XP since it's a reinstall of a preactivated OS. The only thing you have to fear is fear itself. If it's useless now you have nothing to lose, right? You can always take it somewhere after trying, but I doubt you won't be able to do it.
  14. Just reformatting will give you an empty harddrive http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif. What kind of recovery did Dell provide? Do you have a disk to reload presumably XP? It depends on what Dell provided whether you can get to where it was when you bought it. Otherwise, a reformat and clean install will do what you want but you'll have to reinstall all your applications.
  15. I 2nd the idea of visting their web sites for recommendations, minimum requirements, possible deals etc. Depending on their networks you may need Vista Business or Ultimate to connect to the network if you go PC. Edit: You can start here for Madison, here for Marquette.
  16. How birds can down a jet airplane
  17. I remember this weekend. The high that Sunday was -13 in Milwaukee. The thing is the weekend before had tied the record low at -25. My car didn't start either weekend and I had to take a cab to work and back home 2nd shift on the Saturdays, wasn't near brave enough to take the bus.

  19. You need Wii component cables. I bought these.
