  1. Scooter Gennett was an All Star in 2018, badly injured his hamstring in spring training (against the Brewers btw) in 2019 and didn't do much after he returned after 4 months on the DL, and didn't have a taker for his services in either 2020 or 2021. 2021 would be his 31 year old season. Teams don't want to spend money on second basemen if there's a hint they're past their primes.
  2. Cardinal pitching looks very shaky. Cubs are just 3-3 vs. Pirates. Reds will be the Reds, eventually.
  3. notable in that the brewers do not have any infield depth on optional assignment at the moment. also notable in that reyes has already cleared intake, and it's very likely that he traveled with the team as part of their taxi squad. a 40-man roster spot would have to be vacated to add reyes. They're going to need a roster spot for Blaine Hardy very soon too. The inexperience in the pen is a problem. I think they can sneak McKinney through waivers, and even if they don't, they have Taylor ready if an outfielder is needed already on the 40 man.
  4. The troubling thing is that for Hiura and Urias in particular, it's a continuation of last year's struggles and neither has a long track record of major league success. Bradley has been the guy who looks nothing like the guy I expected. I know he's not a great hitter, but he's having one bad AB after another and he's batting in the middle of the lineup often with men on base and doing nothing. I don't know how a major league hitter can look so fooled by a curveball from Adam Wainwright who throws more than any pitcher in baseball.
  5. As good as they are, those guys aren't going to continue putting up numbers like that but it's not all on the offense. They are short 1 1/2 arms in the pen. Williams wasn't ready to start the year and could use a couple of non stress situations to get his groove. They really could use a lefty other than Hader and Suter who's strictly a middle reliever. Perdomo or Hardy or both. Rasmussen? I'd send him down and have him transition back to starter. Boxberger's role figures to expand. Not sure why Counsel doesn't try Lindblom in short relief with the many untested guys he's had to call on.
  6. Boxberger was hitting 96 last night and his experience is going to be needed especially if it takes time for Williams to find his groove.
  7. The trade doesn't solve the offensive issues at SS but it saves some money. Hopefully Turang takes a big step forward this year. Urias looks more like another guy than a prospect.
  8. The temporary fix is to have Vogelbach in the lineup at 1B
  9. I'm not a trained eye but you can literally see Hiura trying to lift on virtually every swing. It's like when the season started he immediately fell back into his bad habits. But it's more than that. In the 7th inning last night, Brewers had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out and Urias batting. He gets ahead 2-0, then takes a 93 mph fastball right down the heart of the plate. The next pitch he swings at a ball out of the zone and fouls it off and gets wiped out on a breaking ball. Sure Narvaez homered behind him, but what's with hitters these days? I get they were behind 4 runs, but it wasn't the 9th and a hit there scores 2. Why be passive in that situation? Urias doesn't look like the answer at SS either.
  10. If Shaw is close to the producer he was in 2017 and 2018, this has a chance to be one of the elite teams. That start couldn't have been better.
  11. Agreed. After a few weeks if they need to add a 13th pitcher, it will be a lot easier to sneak a McKinney or Robertson through waivers or be able to justify optioning either Arcia or Uries if they're struggling. I still say the guy with the most heat on him from the start of the year is Shaw. He's going to play and he's got to produce. He's got maybe 80-100 PA to solidify his spot (OPS at least in neighborhood of .700) or he'll be in danger of losing it. With Vogelbach on the roster, there's no room for Shaw as a bench guy.
  12. Or they liked Vogelbach's approach since he donned a Brewer uniform and they wanted to hold on tho him for next year
  13. There's this narrative out there that the 162 game schedule is going to be very hard on pitching staffs because of the short 2020 season. I'm not buying it. There's been a 162 game schedule for almost 60 years prior to last year and today's pitchers who train year round aren't capable of handling it? With 7 inning double header games and tricked up extra innings to boot? Ridiculous. I'd like to see a 13 man pitching staff limit.
  14. They stand a better chance of getting a guy like McKinney through waivers a couple weeks into the season than they would this week. It's not like he's going to see much action. Taylor is in reality the 5th outfielder even though he won't be on the opening day roster and will be at AAA until he's needed.
  15. It's the same reason Taylor isn't going to make the opening day roster. It's not about service time, it's about having minor league options. Hoerner wasn't going to start. Bote had the inside track and he's raked this spring. Everyone forgets Bote is on a long term deal. He's signed through 2024. Sogard is the utility guy. Hoerner has a mere 375 minor league PA. He needs to play everyday. Cub fans are screaming because half don't understand minor league options. Also Hoerner has shown very little power as a pro. That's not to say he won't but Bote has more pop by far. Hoerner is a nice prospect but he's not the type of upper echelon guy you worry about service time with.
  16. "Never start"? Vogelbach certainly would be in the lineup against RHP in AL parks. Hiura won't be given days off? Heck Yelich gets a half dozen days off. Then there's Wong. He's never played more than 150 games and even in that year (2015), he didn't start all 150. Hiura got some time back at 2B this week in Arizona. Counsell will have no trouble finding Vogelbach a bare minimum of a start a week.
  17. If there's a better chance than not that the DH returns in 2022 and I think it will, I think they can find enough AB's for Vogelbach off the bench and he becomes a key guy in 2022. Hiura in the lineup at second base today is a tell. Means that Wong is going to get off days here and there too.
  18. I had my pick of seats for Wednesday afternoon game against Marlins in late April. Senior tickets were half price too! Can't wait to see a sporting event, forget baseball, any sporting event.
  19. Lindblom has been better this spring than Hauser and he's only on the 2nd year of a 3 year deal so the only explanation is that the expectation is that that spot in the rotation is a placeholder one that's almost certain to be filled by and Ashby or Small in 2022 if not later this year and since Lindblom is signed through 2022 and Houser can just be non-tendered next year, why not see if Lindblom is effective as a reliever? It was eons ago in 2012, but that year Lindblom was pretty effective out of the pen for the Dodgers.
  20. The Cubs haven't allowed printing tickets at home for several years. I believe the Cubs are going to self scanning of e-tickets now too. I'm curious to see how that works as I have e-tickets to the game on the 7th.
  21. Nobody knows Garcia better than the White Sox. He was very highly thought of there, and though he never quite lived up to their lofty expectations, he did have one outstanding season in 2017. I wouldn't expect a big haul back unless the Brewers picked up some of his contract but I definitely think there'd be interest from the Sox. With the praise Counsel has heaped on Taylor this spring, I think the Brewers would be open to making this move but it may not happen until opening day or even shortly after. Garcia was by all accounts a good teammate in Chicago and he's a much better outfielder than Jimenez.
  22. "Houser continues to struggle" Good thing Peralta is being stretched out
  23. Wow, I thought I had opened the optimism thread by mistake.
  24. Just delays the inevitable. Maile was brought in to replace Nottingham as the third catcher on the 40 man. With the depth at the position, I don't think Brewers would be all that disappointed if Nottingham doesn't clear waivers.
  25. I'm guessing barring a trade, someone is going to come up with a phantom injury. An argument can certainly be made that Cain isn't fully recovered. I mean he's played in just 2 games. Then there's Shaw. His getting added to the roster hasn't resulted in a boost in production this spring. Maybe his back is bothering him? I just don't see them letting Vogelbach just go unless some AL team really offers something of value in a deal. I see him getting a couple starts a week at first base and being used daily as that dangerous lefty bat off the bench in late innings like they used Braun when he was out of the lineup.
