    Deadspin

I'm more of an AV Club guy, but I read Deadspin from time to time. Just can't help the irony of criticizing the "stick to sports, no politics" management perspective on a sports message board that expressly prohibits political discussion. I don't have any problem with the rule here (as someone who stopped posting on the Political forum, I think pre-Trump), and I'm not going to fault management for wanting both Democrats and Republicans to read the content (and generate page view revenue via advertisement). I am admittedly curious to see if the site's writers band together and try to make a go of a patron-sponsored website. The only real, sustainable model I've seen for that approach following a high-profile firing is giantbomb.com, but even that was heavily financed via venture capital...the types who make the types of demands Deadspin's editorial staff just got fired for not adhering to. (I'd also be curious to see if they just end up joining an existing site like the Athletic, which I assume is still burning through VC funding in hopes of growing the paying audience to reach a break-even point.)
  2. What's Pizza Ranch? Sounds like a weird combo for a name. It's the pizza / buffet place who (at least in central WI) think it's a good idea to run ads starring Kirk Cousins during Green Bay Packers games.
  3. https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/mlb-floats-proposal-that-would-eliminate-42-minor-league-teams/ I'm sure someone else will start a thread about this topic, but it seems to be part of the discussion in this thread already.
  4. Hard to blame the guy for leaving when they dropped him mid-season. He had a good run with the team; I wish him well.
  5. For a low-key WR pickup...the Bengals have a Wisconsin kid returning kicks for them; wonder if Alex Erickson could be had for a 7th round pick? I'm guessing Shepherd stays on the roster since the Packers won, but he has to be on thin ice at this point.
  6. I do it for Badger games, and I did it to hear Ueck during the playoffs the last 2 years. I stream the play-by-play on my phone (to a bluetooth speaker), and pause live TV (I have a TiVo, but most cable services have some similar option) to compensate for the delay. Getting it to sync takes a bit of patience & the occasional fast forward, but it's better than listening to a lot of TV broadcast teams.
  7. I didn't notice him. I doubt he played that many snaps. Acme Packing Co. has Burks playing 11 snaps on defense last game. If memory serves, Goodson was being evaluated for a concussion after a special teams play, so I would assume the snaps came then. I do remember the broadcast pointing out that he was in the game, but I didn't see any stand-out plays from Burks during that time. That he played in the game at all validates the Packers' decision to leave him on the roster (rather than put him on IR with a return designation).
  8. http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/gamelog/_/id/32760/josh-hader Hader pitched 2 (or more) innings in 14 of his 61 appearances this year. 10 of the 14 came before the all-star break, and Josh only pitched two full innings twice after the trade deadline. It mostly worked, as Hader had 2 wins, 9 saves and a hold against 2 blown saves. I can understand Counsell's rationale for having Hader pitch multiple innings in the Wild Card game, but it wasn't the formula for most of their wins.
  9. I'm not a pitching mechanics guru, but something about Hader was off in the 8th. He threw his first few sliders 1-2 feet outside the zone and high, as well as a few of his fastballs in that territory. I assumed he was too amped up / over-throwing. He was regularly getting behind hitters. As Ken Rosenthal tweeted earlier today, it's only the 3rd time in his career he threw more balls than strikes. ( ) In Colorado, his high fastball just got tagged on Saturday night. Last night wasn't that.
  10. Woodruff, Suter, Davies, Anderson & Nelson looks like a good foundation for the starting rotation....especially if Jimmy can regain his form with a healthy off-season. Add in Guerra, Peralta, a hopeful bounce back from Burns and the return of Knebel, and the good part of our bullpen looks better than they had going in to the season this year. EDIT: ...and I assume they’ll try to bring back Pomerantz & Lyles as well. This team got hit hard by the injury bug late. Moose’s throwing arm kept him out the lineup for about a week (and showed up in the throwing error), Braun showed he was hurting when he caught that ball on the warning track, Cain didn’t have the same range in the outfield that we’ve seen while healthy....and Yelich would have kept the game at least tied if he had been in RF tonight. I love that this team gave everything they had, and the pain of losing the way they did is going to take some time to fade away. It just wasn’t our year. Sincerely, Spring Hopes, Atty.
  11. I'm a bit of a sucker for thank you letters to a team's fans, particularly after the Brewers' recent run of success (that will continue tonight, staying positive!). Bochy's farewell letter to Giants fans is a good one of those. EDIT: changed "retirement" to "farewell," since he may not retire.
  12. Now that the "Will we" question has been answered, is it fair to ask the tangential question? Did the Brewers lose the NL Central by sending Hiura down in June? It was a head-scratching move from a personal performance standpoint, and the Brewers team went 9-12 in the games played from 6/4 - 6/27, including the disasterous west coast trip. Admittedly, I haven't looked up how the 2b performed in the actual games. The counter-argument is mostly the benefit of hindsight: the Brewers still made the post-season, still would be missing Yelich for this post-season run, and the extra time spent in the minors may have saved the Brewers significant savings in arbitration during part of their window of opportunity. It's probably more of an off-season topic (and a reminder that I need to check in to the optimism thread), but it's IMO a valid question, given how close the division race ended up.
  13. I'm just impressed Maddon seems to have found a 9-man lineup of players who haven't already quit; you wouldn't know it from the remainder of the month.
  14. Once you get in to the playoffs, anything can happen! Just keep Winning, Brewers!
  15. Why are there pictures of Cardinals tepidly celebrating in the Optimism Thread? I mean...they have to know they're going to get their heads kicked in this week, in order to give up the Division title, right? Amazed at what the Brewers have accomplished this September, especially after Yeli's injury.
  16. I'd rather have Davies in the rotation and Houser able to put up multiple innings out of the pen than Houser in the rotation and Davies off the roster, particularly with Counsell's tendency towards Johnny Wholestaff. I could also make the case for taking Houser off the post-season roster, as he's well over his innings count from last year (92.1 IP in 2018 vs. 119.2 IP in 2019, inclusive of time in the minors). I don't know if his back-to-back outings last week were a result of fatigue or a result of playing the Cubs & Cardinals, but it's something to watch for the rest of the month. (Jackson, Black and Albers would be the guys fighting for the last spot(s) in the bullpen.) Also presumably goes without saying, but Pina needs to clear the concussion protocol before he gets a roster spot.
  17. Steelers lose Big Ben on Sunday, and per ESPN, are trading their first round pick for Minkah Fitzpatrick. ...is there an equivalent to lottery protection in the NFL? That could end up being a top 5 pick!
  18. ...and it happens the year after the Packers had rights to the Saints 1st round pick.
  19. I used to genuinely enjoy taking photographs during the Brewers games. With the existing netting, there are very few spots where I sit that aren't obstructed by the netting (or the cables holding up the netting). I stopped taking the camera altogether this year. Honestly, I will end up buying more Badger hoops & Packers tickets in the long run, since those are opportunities to take photos that don't make focusing near impossible by putting up a net between the lens and the players. I get that there are kids and people who should be sitting behind the netting...but there's plenty of seats in those areas that are going unused (and most of them are cheaper than the seats down the line).
  20. I'm happy that Suter is pitching well, and especially that the Brewers are giving him days off between outings.
  21. The Brewers have won 7 straight, and should be just a half game back from the Division lead when that streak hits 10 games this weekend. EDIT: Since the Cardinals are playing right now, it'll either be a tie or a full game back by the end of the weekend. Still worth talking about!
  22. This weekend was the second-best possible outcome for the Brewers. Still playing meaningful games in September, and Regular Season Yelich has turned into September Yelich....it's a pretty good time to be a Brewers fan.
  23. The Brewers bullpen is Russian Roulette at this point; most of the time things work out, but the one time they don't turns really bad. There are things about Counsell's use of the bullpen that I don't particularly like (pitchers working on 3 consecutive games, as an example), but I don't blame him when picking his poison in the bullpen.
  24. Some of the cuts have already been picked up at Acme Packaging Co, but none of the real big decisions have happened yet. As to your list, #3 is the one I disagree with most. I think ESB will be kept on the 53-man roster through cut-down, then immediately moved to IR (so he can be designated to return later this season)...and I think Shepherd's fumble on the KR last night ended his shot at making the 53. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he makes the Practice Squad, though. I've heard the 3QB idea tossed out on the J-S packers podcast, and it's certainly possible. My suspicion is they're going with 2, and will try to bring Wilkins back on the practice squad. I'd rather keep the younger, more physically talented guy as the backup / QB project, so Kizer stays IMO.
