  1. ::ficticiously looks at my cable/internet bill:: How is this even possible? In truth, I know that the rise of video streaming online & satellite competition has probably contributed to Charter (and nearly every other cable company) losing market share. Their tendency to charge monopolistic prices only enhance the problem.
  2. Shooter that's not a FPS? And you have a PS3? Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (on my pile o' shame - haven't yet played) or Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction are great options. (There's a PSN demo for both games, as well as a shorter, 'sequel' to R&C - Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty, if you'd like to try before you buy in for full retail.) I don't know that I can really help with your internet connection, but are you hard-wired (ethernet), or Wi-Fi?
  3. Having to watch last night's show on TiVo, I can confirm that Annie Wersching (Agent Walker) is about 10x more attractive in high definition. (She still looks good in SD, mind you, just not as good.) Of course, now that Chuck's back on, she'll have to settle for playing the 2nd - hottest 'Agent Walker' on Monday Night TV. But I digress. My main gripe with the season thusfar is that no one has pointed out to the appeasers that, if the U.S. withdraws its forces from Made-up-ala, there would be nothing preventing the terrorists with the CIP device to make additional demands. (Granted, the government's top nerds were looking for a way to patch the firewall, but until that gets done, the threat would still be there.) That's not a plothole, so it's not really affecting my enjoyment of the show (which dragged a bit this week on the road to the next upheaval, IMO). It's more of an irritation....which means my main gripe is pretty minor compared to the past few seasons. Spoiler-y question: Anyone know how many episodes the 'big bad' character from the transition / TV movie is signed up for? I'm surprised we haven't seen [that character] yet.
  4. Yet another example that SB marketers continue to target the halftime show at someone 20-30 years older than I am. Generally tolerant of his music, but the political edge to his recent public appearances left me disinterested; I started to watch the game while it was in progress (thank you, TiVo), and got caught up by skipping most of the halftime show. I commented in the LL.net in-game thread about the added level of irony of a guy singing "glory days" at the biggest event of the sporting world, considering he was already past his when the song was recorded about 20 years ago. Didn't watch the VH1 pre-game concert either (Rhianna, Fall Out Boy, etc.) but that seemed more like a show that I would have made a point to watch rather than just skip over.
  5. Felt like the writers went a bit overboard with Dwight; it was a stretch to see him actually start a fire to prove their non-preparedness....it was a farce to see what he did to the CPR torso. I'd like to say that I thought the episode was pretty boss, but it was too hit-or-miss to deserve such such high praise. The only part of the 'mini-movie' sequence that actually got a chuckle out of me was Cloris Leachman hitting the wrong button on the stair-climber. Probably the best Andy Bernard episode they've done in a long time, though. The movie critic bit was just just aloof enough to be within character and believable, without being over-the-top. Likewise, his role in the roast was very in-character, and well done. The best line of the show, though, was Michael (paraphrasing) 'we should call YouTube and have them film this.' It's such a perfect line for the character: combining the baseline understanding of a cultural touchstone, while at the same time completely missing the point.
  6. There's just something about those quotes which don't sit well with me....and I can't really put my finger right on-point. Is there some inherent virtue in a comic book movie not "feeling" like a comic book (green hair and bat-suits notwithstanding)? Or is the idea that comic-based properties could have plotlines that are more thought-provoking than a Michael Bay movie really a surprise to people? I've had an on-again, off-again relationship with comic books since about age 5, so it doesn't surprise me to see interesting storylines playing out within the cape and cowl set. Not every movie has to be pewpew lazers or plotless CGI-fests which require you to leave your brain at the door (see my thoughts on the "Wanted" movie from earlier in the thread). When X-Men is at it's best, it often involves using mutant-kind as an allegory for civil rights or adolescent angst; the scene in X2 where Iceman "outed" himself as a mutant to his parents is a perfect example....even if it doesn't continue to hit you over the head with the idea like Dark Knight did (dumb cops can do a lot to make criminals look smart). And, honestly, one of the things that made me enjoy Iron Man more than TDK was how close they came to the comic book version....and the potential to tell some of those classic stories without everything getting the 'Daredevil / Elektra' makeover. Or it could just be that, after all the other successful comic-based projects (e.g. Sin City, 300), and with Watchmen on the horizon....I'm surprised that we're still having that kind of a discussion.
  7. Geez, Jim...can't you just be a jerk on the way out? Burn a few bridges, so it will be easier to see you go. No. Instead of all that, you have to take the high road and show - once again - that you're a class act. Best wishes in Atlanta; I'm looking forward to the pre-game shows when the Brewers go to the ATL.
  8. My vote brought them back to 22%. (Instead of a beer, I'll settle for a diet pepsi.)
  9. Didn't think about it until I read Robert's post, but the entire show was time-splitting. The Oceanic Six plotline is taking place in the flash-forward time period, whereas Sawyer, Juliet, Faraday, Bernard & Rose are adrift in time. (If Desmond's event took place alongside the rest of the O-6, the flash forwards are happening 3 years later.) My guess is that '70 hours' calculates the point in which our time-adrift friends next intersect with the O-6 (but only because any other possibility would break my brain).
  10. http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2009/oscars I'm sure someone else will start an Oscars thread - but I was more surprised by Downey Jr.'s nomination than I was TDK's non-nomination.
  11. I don't think you're going to notice a ton of difference between the two, out of the box. They have the identical graphics hardware, amount of RAM, hard drive size, etc. Since they're both made by the same people, I'd expect virtually all of the internals to be identical; you might want to check as to where the systems can top out on RAM (as extra memory could be used to extend the life of the desktop, if you wanted to do that). My one hesitation with recommending an upgrade to the graphics card (and this is where my laptop buying hurts my ability to recommend), is that I don't know whether graphics cards in the $100 range are going to provide a significant boost in performance over the integrated GPU on the motherboard. You're obviously not getting a high-end GPU on integrated graphics, but you're also not buying a high-end card in the $100 range, so be sure to look at some benchmarking sites before you buy. (There are other benefits of a graphics card - like HDMI output, and having a TV tuner on your PC - but it doesn't sound like that's your motivation here.)
  12. As someone who bought a new laptop in November, Vista isn't that big of a deal - if your computer is being built around it. Most of the actual Vista complaints I've heard were centered around legacy software (old programs) and hardware (no Vista drivers) -- neither one really sounds like an issue for you, buying these things new. Be sure you download a good, free anti-virus (I like Avast) and anti-spyware (spybot S&D), and keep the system updated, and you should be fine. My normal perspective on laptops (or any computer, honestly): don't put too much money in. If you buy a $500 laptop today, and it does everything you need for 2 years....and you have to buy another laptop 2 years later for $500, that second laptop is going to be vastly superior to a laptop that you'd spend $1,000 for today. Let Moore's law work for you, not against you. For that reason alone, I'd stay away from a Mac. If you are going to break that general guideline, I'd recommend doing so for graphics hardware in your laptop or the display (since it's virtually impossible to upgrade these features on most laptops). Memory is one of the places where you can save cash: it's normally cheaper to buy RAM online through a good vendor (I like crucial.com) and install yourself than it is to add memory from the manufacturer.
  13. My one thought is this: how do you use your computer? It may sound like a stupid question, but as someone who migrated over to laptops a few years back (for personal use, I still have a desktop at work), I'd much rather sit in front of a TV with my laptop and browse the Internet than be shackled to my computer desk. On the other hand, if you're planning on using the computer for processor-intensive applications (like video editing, gaming, etc.), you might still need that desktop. It's difficult to advise someone without that sort of background info.
  14. I'd love to contribute, and make fun of old people, but I'm too afraid of that critical step when someone loses touch with the cutting edge. Personally, I've never really "got" the point of social networking sites, but I do have a facebook page I'm neglecting. Twitter just seems like a bridge too far for yours truly. Instinctively, I know and understand what it is, but I don't see the 'there' there, either from a business model or from a 'why the heck would I want to read person A's comments @PersonB' -standpoint. There's just No CES for Old Men.
  15. It's not a new pattern for Bo; he did the same thing with Jason Chappel a few years ago. I'd be curious to know the rationale behind it as well.
  16. So far, so good. You can practically book the first dude's abduction (I'm holding out for that not happening, with the writers knowingly playing to expectations...but the setup is definitely there). I am admittedly curious as to who's funding the CTUnderground. I can only assume that Buchannan has been stealing Steve Jobs' wardrobe and not shaving in order to stretch out his funding. If he eats a bowl of ramen for lunch next week, I'll know for sure. Jack trusts these people inherently, so they don't need to explain things to him, but I'd like to know what they plan on doing when they get into a room with the big bad, or if they have any semblance of government sanctioning for their activities. FBI Mole: is it Walsh, Garofalo, the boss, or someone we haven't really been introduced to yet? (I'm discounting Agent Walker, since she was with Bauer the whole time....and because she wouldn't be pushing to find out where Jack and Tony were going if she already had an in. That, and I think she's attractive, and would like to see the character stick around.) That's the problem with setting up the new office in so little time: it really narrows down the suspects for 'the bad guy.'
  17. Somehow, despite my not historically liking the show, I keep finding myself watching the start of a new season. (Their starting the show after NFL playoff games is likely a contributing factor there.) I didn't start watching until I was done with the TiVo'd Badger game (ugh) and playoff games, so I missed the first 20 minutes or so. I did catch someone making an off-hand remark about disbanding CTU....which I find hard to understand, given the terrorist actions of the prior 6 seasons (including a nuclear detonation, having Air Force One shot down, and the assassination of at least one former president). As with the past few seasons, I'll inevitably keep watching until I feel like the plot is getting stupid. (My goal is to gripe about it less, though.) EDIT: Walsh was one of the highpoints of the episode for me, although it took hearing his voice 2-3 times before I could place him. I never imagined what he'd look like as the "suit." (The one word that kept popping into my head once I had placed him.)
  18. Not only is Shawn White Snowboarding compatible with the Wii Balance Board, but Nintendo led off their e3 2008 press conference with their PR person playing the game on said balance board. (For what it's worth, if you're interested in the game, I understand that the version available at Target stores has additional content to play through.)
  19. Torres finished the paperwork in late November, and the Brewers made the corresponding roster move on Dec. 2.Link
  20. http://www.jsonline.com/business/37264004.html The Milwaukee Brewers and Potawatomi Bingo and Casino are expected to announce later today a larger and more involved partnership. The tribe has an advertising relationship with the team, but the new agreement is expected to be much more involved. In the earlier article about the Brewers' financials, Schlesinger said that a potential replacement for Mercedes should be named shortly after the calendar turns to 2009. I think the Potawatomi are a safe bet for this one.
  21. Was the car crash the cause of the man's death? Would the man have died anyway, regardless of the crash (e.g., having a heart attack while driving)?
  22. Did the murderer give him the map? The card? Did the man know the murderer? Did the man die before the car was damaged? While the car was being damaged? After the damage occurred? Is the card larger than an average-sized business card? Smaller than an average-sized business card?
  23. I know what song will be going onto my iPod if this gets finalized...
  24. Was his 'car' an automobile? Was he in a train car? Was he found alone in the car? Was he driving the car when he died? Was he murdered? Was there an physically obvious cause of death? Was the car found in operable condition? (ie., if you tried starting the car, would it still work without repair?)
  25. Cannibalism has something to do with this, but the food itself was not human in origin? (Summary question, I realize) Did the meal involve a protein? Did the meal contain fish? Did the meal contain beef? Did the meal contain chicken? Did the meal contain 'game' animal (e.g. bison, venison, duck, quail)? Did anyone in the restaraunt (other than the man himself) know that he intended to kill himself? Did the man know anyone in the restaraunt? Did the man eat alone? Did the man live alone?
