  1. You have this backwards, Braun is one of the worst LF in history by age at least. Holliday is roughly average.
  2. Football is an easier game than baseball. You either have the talent or you don't in most cases. Hitting is not quite so simple.
  3. There are plenty of nitpicks I can have with Melvin but most of the bigger complaints are due to unreal expectations on how long it takes to rebuild a team that is as bad as the Brewers were. I would expect it to take close to 10 years and it has taken about that long, now the big question is just where we go from here.
  4. Our defense is bad enough without doing something like this.
  5. And by pessimistically I'd say realistically. Our defense right now outside of maybe C is a plus in CF and below average at every other position. Weeks just might be our second best defensive player. On the plus side you can't make an error on a K (other than the C obviously~). We should have fewer players on base against us and fewer balls put in play against us by starters this year than in the past. That can help limit how much damage the defense can do at least somewhat.
  6. I'd say we have better pitching than the Reds but the Cardinals are still really good. I think our pitching is probably better but they are in a pitchers park and have better defense behind them so I'd think the results might favor them a little.
  7. I think we are going to be just terrible in about 4 years but hopefully this gives us a real shot at the playoffs the next two.
  8. As long as we find a SS to start and make Betancourt the backup I'm ok with this deal. If we can sign Greinke long term I'm obviously happy too. I think that fangraphs piece really undervalues Cain though, he will be a solid CF. Not a star but a solid starter.
  9. Well pitching WAR is completely useless so I'll agree with at least part of it. On the position player side the replacement level CF is just really bad. All it really takes is being a decent fielder to have value as a CF and keep in mind $1.5M is a very small chunk of money. Where I think the biggest problem is would be defensive metrics and WAR for partial seasons which probably does artificially inflate Gomez's value but I have no problem at all spending that money on a no hit good glove backup CF.
  10. I don't really want Renteria but I think it is very important we get someone who could play 2B or SS every day. Sending Escobar down at some point is a possibility and Weeks isn't any less of an injury risk having been healthy a year, his wrists are always going to be a concern.
  11. As long as Escobar and Cain start the year in the bottom of the order I'm ok with whatever we do. If they can get their OBPs up in the .350 range then you can start talking about them hitting in the 1 or 2 spot. If one of them has to hit leadoff I'd pick Cain because he has a better approach at the plate. I don't know that Escobar will ever hit well enough to be in the top of the order, he really only has value there if he is hitting .300 or better consistently or he completely changes his approach at the plate.
  12. As poorly as he hit he still put up a positive WAR last year and that was with having a down year defensively as well. This is a very fair price for him. Now if he would only stop swinging at 40% of the pitches that are thrown to him that are out of the strike zone maybe he could get to replacement level offensively.
  13. Cirillo was a huge step behind either of these guys, not really in the same league at all. In the case of Yount his prime years aren't anywhere near as good as Yount's prime years. In the case of Molitor his number of really good years is not anywhere close to Molitor's.
  14. I still don't like him much. Partially because of the defense we put on the field and the insane GB% which is really the only strength he has.
  15. My guess would be he was shut down late in 2000 for the arm injury that kept him out of the early part of 2001. In 2002 he had 136 IP in the majors and 20 IP in the minors which seems normal. I couldn't find any info on 1999.
  16. Given the year he had at age 22 it isn't surprising he got a lot of hype, there wasn't even any luck in the stats or anything. He just regressed from there.
  17. I don't think the money is a big issue at two years, the fact he is a type A free agent is what would break the deal for me.
  18. Maybe different people are posting than before? I don't know where it was discussed previously but if you live by the fastball you are going to be hurt more by a loss of velocity than if you live by off speed stuff and location. Even the really good fastball guys evolve into more offspeed type guys with age, even guys like Randy Johnson did that.
  19. In 2001 he had some arm problems as well but other than that from 1998-2002 he split time between the majors and minors, he didn't have any injury problems.
  20. In 2005 he had shoulder problems, in 2006 he had back problems. 2007 and 2008 were due to the TJ surgery. You would probably need some proof that it was a conditioning problem though given just how often pitchers get hurt.
  21. They release a couple teams each week and haven't gotten to the Twins yet. Bill James has him down for a 4.34 ERA but never a fan of those projections. Pavano is going to be impossible to project ERA wise anyway, he just lets too many balls in play so he is at the whim of the defesne/BABIP/LOB%.
  22. Just out of curiosity, what do you consider to be a good ERA for a starting pitcher? In this case I just looked at years with an ERA+ of 100 or better. Usually average starter ERA is significantly higher than league average ERA so if you can do a 100 ERA+ you generally had a pretty good year.
  23. ZiPs has us at the following for those that like that kind of thing. Gallardo - 3.49 Marcum - 3.79 (Blue Jays projection) Wolf - 4.09 Narveson - 4.76 (Capuano - 4.29) If we can find another Wolf quality pitcher somehow that is looking like it could be one of our better overall rotations to start a season in a while. It obviously most likely will not match the Sabathia+Sheets year in overall production.
  24. If you go by ERA he's had 5 good years. If you go by WAR he's had 6 or 7 good yeras. If you go by FIP he's had probably 7 good years and his only bad years were for the Yankees. Again Pavano isn't a great pitcher and I am not really excited about signing him but we have to at least be honest about how good he is. He is not Suppan 2.0.
  25. I would think the guy who relies on control would be hurt less by losing 2 MPH than the guy who just chucks in up there as fast as he can. The change up tends to age better than just about any other pitch in my experience. As long as you don't lose so much velocity on the fastball that the change up starts looking the same you are ok.
