  1. This seems really odd because if he turned down the earlier deal it was a huge mistake on his part but the weaker deal was a huge mistake on the Royals part.
  2. I just think it is fully that people say this is a baseball thing when the same exact scenarios happened in the NFL and NBA recently and were dealt with in the same exact ways. This may be a really dumb way to look at this issue but it isn't a baseball thing.
  3. There is no significant monument in US history that is more disappointing than the liberty bell though, that counts against them.
  4. To be fair if you think of Milwaukee a lot of people attribute the name Miller to the city. Nobody thinks of American Family. The latter definitely feels more corporate and less organic. Same with Bush for St. Louis.
  5. It is certainly the majority of it but do you think Harper is buying a cheap house?
  6. I think people are missing some pretty big factors in these two deals. Machado is highly unlikely to make $30M after this contract assuming he goes the full 10 years. The way contracts are going these days for older players and the fact he isn't likely to age well means it is highly unlikely he gets another deal after this. This is a straight up $30M bonus to Harper. Harper actively wanted to stay in one spot for the rest of his career, that means the opt out isn't the big deal people think it is. He wants to move his family somewhere and know that they are set there for the long term. Machado has a very limited no trade clause while Harper has a complete no trade clause. That alone is worth something like $50M in value. Machado barely controls his own fate while Harper has complete control. Harper is also going to a team that is competitive immediately and Machado may never reach the playoffs. That is a big bonus monetarily for Harper. The cost of living in San Diego is almost 50% higher than in Philadelphia, that adds up big time over a 13 year period. Harper got a much better deal than Machado here, it isn't really close. He did it while most likely being slightly lesser of a player as well. There is no way Harper would ever trade this contract for Machado's.
  7. His bbFIP which takes into account quality of contact etc was 3.25 so there is a good chance it was for real. Having said that pretty much every expected stat he had suggests regression. It is pretty clear last years results were largely luck, just a matter of how much regression you should expect.
  8. We know a good about Coors, we know it inflates home OPS quite a bit and we know that it heavily deflates road OPS a bit. Every player who has gone from Coor's to another park has gotten better on the road as a result. Stop quoting road splits for players in Coor's like it means much, it really doesn't.
  9. I think the Reds are being grossly overrated. They added very little of value and maybe the biggest addition they have is by subtraction of finally getting Hamilton off of the team. The guys they did add are blocking guys who are probably better than them. Kemp and Puig are going to steal AB from Winker and Senzel who are probably better players. Roark and Gray are probably close to replacement level pitchers. The one big addition they made was Alex Wood. Edit: I mean it is plausible they are a .500 team now and that does make the division tougher. What I posted is a bit more harsh than I meant it to be. I just don't think they are going to be fighting for a playoff spot or anything like that.
  10. I don't have a ton of faith in Nelson this year, but this news is completely irrelevant. There was never going to be a spring training where Nelson didn't have some aches and pains, it is always part of the process.
  11. A salary cap will not work in baseball unless you completely revamp the minor league system from top to bottom. It just isn't realistic.
  12. The issue is really how soon players hit free agency and how much they get paid before they reach it. The top end players don't really have much to complain about even though they are the most vocal. The owners are 100% correct that they should not be handing out these terrible long term contracts to guys age 30+ anymore. That doesn't mean everything is just fine though.
  13. Carlos Gomez vs Gorman Thomas is a close race in CF. Gomez was a much better player over a much shorter time. He put up a total of 19 WAR for the Brewers, Gorman put up 18.5 in much more time. That is probably giving him too much credit for defense as well, Gorman was below average out there imo. Cameron only played 2 years for the Brewers and one wasn't even a full year, it just isn't enough time to include him in the list.
  14. If there is a strike it is going to happen in 2022, it isn't looming this season. A lot can happen in that time frame.
  15. 2B Paul Molitor SS Robin Yount LF Ryan Braun 1B Cecil Cooper C Jonathan Lucroy RF Ben Oglive CF Carlos Gomez 3B Jeff Cirillo SP Teddy Higuera RP Rollie Fingers Maybe Monitor at 2B is cheating but Gantner was so mediocre I couldn't do it, the only positive I can say for him is he played a long time for one team.
  16. It won't bother me at all if the Brewers trade Hiura as part of a deal for Trevor Bauer mid season if he looks healthy.
  17. If you honestly think people wanting the DH in the NL is why baseball is losing fans you are completely out of touch with reality. Nobody gives a crap about Nascar either, those are some heavily biased stats you are posting. That is showing viewership per event which is comparing like the average viewership of 90 baseball games a week compared to the one Nascar race that happens. If you want to use crooked math you can still show that baseball is more popular than football, if you look at viewership of all games for a full season baseball blows the NFL away. You have to skew things towards per game viewership to make the math come out other ways and it is a fair way to do it in many cases but it is still flawed.
  18. Machado didn't care about anything other than the dollar signs. The White Sox offered him a much better deal and have just as bright a future and he turned it down, he wanted the guaranteed money so even if he quits and stinks he gets paid. This is one of the most selfish players in the game and I imagine it is going to end up biting the Padres in the long run.
  19. There is very little proof that this is an accurate statement. The Brewers were one hit away from going to the World Series. Sale was hurt and pitched poorly in the world series and the rest of Boston's rotation was not very good and they won it all. It is a bit scary that outside of maybe Chacin not a single pitcher on the team can be relied on for more than 150 IP. It definitely puts some strain on the team overall. But pitching is not what wins championships regardless of the silly saying. There are really rare cases where it holds true like the one crazy Bumgarner year but it is usually the hitting that decides things more than the pitching.
  20. Not sure I would call Machado a generational talent. Trout is one, Betts might be, but not Machado. If you look at WAR over the past 4 seasons that Machado has been 100% healthy over, he still is only the 9th highest hitter by WAR. He only barely edges out Yelich and nobody is calling him generational... yet! Machado is a really good baseball player who is probably getting put into a bad situation for him. He isn't going to get to re-establish himself at SS, it is a bad hitters park that is going to suppress his stats some and they probably won't compete the next 2 years at which point he will be moving into his late 20's and probably start to decline a little.
  21. What he doesn't mention is that Mous turned down a multi year deal from another team because he wanted to play for the Brewers.
  22. They are certainly in the running with the weakest of the SFG teams in recent years where only 1 of the 3 teams were actually good who won it. Alos that one really terrible Cardinals team who lucked into it after like 83 wins in the regular season.
  23. I disagree about Perez, he is the key to making this work. Perez is a pretty good option against lefties...consistent .780 to .800 OPS against lefties. Moustakas isn't terrible against lefties. Shaw is more likely to get platooned in this configuration. Moustakas has a career OPS of .693 against lefties. Shaw has a career .724. I have no idea why people think Shaw is the one who should be platooned. He has been better than Moustakas in his career against lefties. Last year Shaw struggled against lefties while playing hurt for half the season but in general he doesn't have extreme splits.
  24. Cedeno looked completely overmatched and frankly overwhelmed in big moments. This is a pitcher I would never want to rely on in any high leverage situation for my team.
  25. Well to be fair Miley only had 2 seasons with an ERA+ over 100 going into last season so not much difference. I do think Miley had shown some upside in his peripherals going into the season while Tomlin has shown mostly that he is done the last few years.
