  1. Coco is linked in there too. Not all that surprising considering his connections. Considering the economy and everything and the potential that he may have been artificially inflated even in recent years, I"m glad we don't have three years $30 mil left of him.
  2. 90-72 After the unlucky football season the Packers had, the weird losing streak that UW had, Yovani's outing in Philly, I feel like our luck is going to change.
  3. All things considered, I would give them a B+ on the baseball side of things. Melvin played the market well, got his closer, got depth and kept our young guys happy by not going to arby. When you include the loss of JP and the hiring of CP, I'd move that down to a D for an offseason.
  4. This is the worst offseason acquisition in Brewers history. I'll be forced to give him a chance, but I'd rather have Jeffery Hammonds in the booth.
  5. To start the season, I'd love for them to go Bush, Manny, Soup, Yo, Looper. You can't walk Soup out there on opening day after the playoffs and the offseason; the fans have unfairly dogged the heck out of him and they'd turn on him quickly when he gives off a leadoff shot to Soriano. I think it'd be best for the fans and Soup's confidence to get his first start on the road and not in an opening day atmosphere. If you give Yo a few more days after the WBC and then you put out your big off-season signing, I think that is a good first two days in Milwaukee.
  6. I agree that this is hogwash, but it is nice to be mentioned in these bits. Teams like the Royals, Marlins, Rangers, Astros, D-Backs etc. don't even get mentioned because the average fan doesn't care about them. The Brewers put themselves on the radar with young, interesting players and now people think of us. I could be wrong and this could go away, but I'm happy we are in the conversation because at least we're relevant. That said, I still think we're in the bottom three because of the loss of Jim Powell.
  7. I hope Yeti isn't too dismayed about being bumped from the rotation into an undefined role. It really isn't fair to assume that he is the odd man out when there is a possibility that the Soup has completely lost it (looking at the last six months of the season). Then again, we're paying him $12.5 mil so it is hard to see him getting moved to the long relief mode. Is there any chance that Looper has considered going back into the pen? Any one else think that Mrs. Looper looks a lot like Trennie?
  8. I feel bad for Yeti. I had unreasonably high expectations for him in the starting rotation and he probably will still get a few starts this year. Still this is a good move in that it gives our BP even more depth. Yeti, Newhouse and Hoffman in the 7, 8 and 9th are as good as any in the league. We saw how the Cubs were pretty shut down last year if they had a lead going into the 7th (except for that great comeback win the Crew had against Wood). When Samadrjia (sp?), Marmol and Wood were on, they were lights out. I'm forgetting who Samarjdia replaced in the 7th inning.
  9. In other news, the Brewers signed Jeff Suppan for two years at $12.5 mil/year + use of suite at home games. Plus we get an option at year 5 for $12.75 mil!!! Wow have times changed. I only bring it up because the two are fairly similar pitchers. Imagine that we could basically get Wolf for two years at what we're paying Soup per year. Every team has an agreement like that, but it just shows how crazy things are.
  10. Aside from his allegiences, this really would disappoint me. I live in Chicago and when I can't get Brewer games in my car, I listen to WGN. I listen to a lot of Cubs games and Corey bores the living daylights out of me. It is a combination of his voice and lack of insight. He would be a terrible addition to the Brewers games. He doesn't fill the air well like Jim did. To his credit, he is accurate and knows a lot about the teams, but he isn't what we want in Milwaukee.
  11. Do I overrate what Cam means to this clubhouse? Judging from how he leads things at the Brewers Warm-up and how the young guys all seem to gravitate toward him, I think Melvin may also be weary of making a trade that even gets us better value back because there are key intangibles. He drove me nuts last year, especially in the lead off role, but I have higher expectations this year and think he can get us on a roll again.
  12. Maybe Prince has seen the light a little bit and maybe he has seen what can happen if you play solid ball and work hard day in and day out like CC did--you get yours. He's still incredibly young, incredibly talented, incredibly left-handed and I'm glad we have him for three more years at a decent price. The average first baseman makes roughly $7.1 million a year. Prince is easily in the top 5-10, so you have to think it is a solid contract. I'd only rank Tex, Poojols, Howard, Morneau and Cabrera ahead of Prince and I think Prince is there with D. Lee, Berkman, Delgado (post-Willie) and Youkillis in the next tier. In fact, I'd take prince over all those 2nd tier guys even if you include defense (though a healthy 2006 D. Lee would be tough to pass up)
  13. Won't miss him at all. I always found him to be in the Eckstein mold of annoying players. No good reason, but just thought he was a little overhyped. That said, he's got great stats.
  14. TH is reporting that Boras is trying to get more than the $18.7 that Cabrera signed for the first two years of his arbitration. Cabrera's production was a bit better than Prince's, so hard to see Prince getting much more. Assuming Prince wins his Arby request at $8 mil, that assumes you get him next year for $10.7 next year which is less than he'd probably get in a 2010 hearing unless he stinks this year.
  15. If it buys out all of the arbitration a la Hamels, that is fine with me. Then we don't have to go through this song and dance every year. Prince's defense drives me nuts as does his slumps, but when his feet are to the fire and the team needs him, more often than not he seems to come through. He has had stellar Septembers the last two years when everyone around him seemed to falter. He is a passionate player and we greatly underestimate his abilities because we remember the down times. He still projects at a .280-.290 hitter with massive pop and more clutch than anyone other than Braun. Frankly, I think you keep him for the next three years and have teams fear the middle of our lineup. Assuming he improves his shape as Ash has indicated, he will be a player on the rise and I rank him as a top 5-8 1B in the league. Many of us are too hard on Fielder and hold his contract comments against him while ignoring the few games that he single handedly won for us last year. Am I the only one excited to keep him?
  16. Surely they'll be available on ebay at a cheaper cost than camping out. I'll figure something out. They are doing the group tickets for the Saturday game so the bars are doing that. You can't really beat the 3 pm friday afternoon start though.
  17. This may be better in the Major Leagues forum, but I was wondering how I could get my hands on a handful of tickets for Opening Day. I have friends in town and in the past those guys have gone through Leff's. I see that Brewers aren't selling group tickets this year. Are there any similar events that these guys could do? Thanks!
  18. The $2 mil difference is the largest out there except for Howard. Can't believe he asked for $18 mil. I'm not too worried about getting this all worked out quickly. With all the vets I expect to be teamless come May, I think we sit at $80 million until we suffer an injury and have to go out there and find a replacement. It is a buyer's market and cash is king, so we should just sit pretty and see how things pan out. Personally I think Yeti will stun everyone and be a great starter. I know it is a discussion for other topics, but if you assume he is a good starter, the biggest questions in the rotation are 1. Soup's ability to pitch, 2. The consistency of Bush and Parra and 3. Yo's durability.
  19. I think we're going to make a few good moves toward the end of the off-season. I think we're waiting out the market and may bring in a couple guys to add depth to SP. I expect we bring in two of the following, one being a minor league deal: Bryd, Garland, Garcia, Looper, Odalis, Livan, Fogg, Kip Wells or Mulder. The first four and maybe Odalis could fit into our starting rotation, although Garcia has a bit to prove. Surely one of the others will have a good 2009 season. The question is which. I hope we don't sniff around Bartolo or Sidney. There may be some leftovers at the team buffet now that CC is gone, but I'd hate to see either of those two being a call up of ours.
  20. Does anyone know the answer to Game's question? whether there's a certain date that if a player remains unsigned, the draft compensation expires?
  21. I am probably stating the obvious, but it seems that the Cubs have gone off and made the front part of the Peavy trade and have saved themselves from getting the Indians or O's to back out from the trade that was in place in December. Rather than being a four team deal, it will just be a two team deal and Cub will have gotten Peavy for Pie, DeRosa and I guess Marquis. If Peavy deal doesn't pan out, they will be stuck holding a bag of random pitching prospects, but the only player they lost of any value for their 2009 team was DeRosa, who they believe they have adequately replaced with Bradley. I still think we're looking at a team with a shelf life of 2 years max, but can't fault Hendry for laying it on the line while A-Ram, D Lee and Soriano are still decent.
  22. Those guys are talk show hosts which is totally different than play-by-play. They wouldn't fit in at all and lack the necessary experience. I think O'Donnell is great in his current role, but can't imagine him doing play-by-play. Funny thing is, this decision by Powell will have more impact on me as a fan than any of the Brewers' moves. So much of the Brewers, win or lose, is Powell and Ueck. Please don't go!
  23. I didn't realize that it was included in my Comcast package, but it was a welcome surprise to come home to Harvey's Wallbangers automatically tivoed.
  24. Anyone know of any Brewers leaning bars in Chicago? The Packers/Badgers bars I go to are also Cubs bars for some reason.
  25. If you consider that Fuentes went for just under $9 per season, I think this is a good deal. Hoffman will be motivated to get to 600 and I'd be happy to see him do it in one season. Obviously, that would be asking near record setting pace, but hey why not dream. This really gives us quite a bit more flexibility. I can't imagine that we'd waste our time going to see Cordero now. He won't want to play here if he's guaranteed second fiddle. This signing makes me think about that great article written last winter re. Gywnn and Hoff at bat at the end of 2007. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3243227
