  1. The new 26 man roster will not effect what the Brewers plan to do with the bullpen, as they ran 13 pitchers basically all last year. However, the new 15 days being down will affect shuttling. So I think less planned shuttling will be the hope out of camp. But, really the roster and how many pitchers actually have options to be sent down will dictate more than anything.
  2. It bothers me that this is shaping up to be a way that the Cardinals are going to acquire him for peanuts. I dunno, if the rockies really do get to the point they are going to trade him, there would be at least 10 teams making offers and they would take the highest bidder. That might wind up being the Cards, but it would cost alot...and I think regardless of where he goes, Arenado is opting out as long as he stays healthy. That means there would be a lot more teams interested in him for 2 years instead of 7-8. But, I don't think you end up with ten teams bidding. Arenado has full no-trade. So I'm sure he would let the Rockies know which team(s) he would even agree to go to. Plus how much surplus value does he even have over contract for the teams to actually bid on?
  3. So what exactly do you want to do with our excess payroll money every year? You're going to have to take some shots knowing that they're not going to work out great on the back end. May as well do them when you've made the playoffs two years in a row and have never won a World Series and have an MVP caliber player to build around. You don't have "excess payroll money every year" the second a big free agent contract is signed. The Brewers have one shot and they can't get it wrong, unlike the big wallet teams. If the player we sign gets injured or underperforms, we can't spend for another guy. So I have no problems with caution. If we are under budget this year, I'm sure MA will allow us to be over budget a following year.
  4. I ditto this response. I don't think it was clear it was a budget decrease from day one. I even think they cleared room to make a free agent deal, but then those deals just became too long/rich for our blood.
  5. At this point, the only free agent huge move left is Donaldson, right? Don't see that happening. So would have to be a trade. Which other team is also going to be willing to send a great player to the Brewers before trading deadline? Don't see where we have a surplus of major league talent or minor league talent to make that done. Unless it is purely a salary ditch, which really isn't a huge move imo. Don't see that happening. My guess is a free agent reliever and a move for a 3B that is ready to try the majors for the first time or someone that is going to start the year in AAA, and we sign Todd Frasier as placekeeper.
  6. You have to figure he is going to be as good as he will be by the end of spring training, right? It has been eons since he was hurt. If he isn't doing good enough, they just pay him the money and cut him right? Off the 26 man roster. The Dodgers have a million dollars in their couch cushions.
  7. Could be just me but it would be really bad sign if Burnes & Peralta can’t make the 26 man roster on opening day. They should be past that point. Either make rotation or be in pen. If the option is to have a so-so reliever versus have a guy ready in AAA that can start - I would send him to AAA (assuming the pen has other options). He can always come up later in the season and go in the pen, but I think it is important to have a guy stretched out. A call-up for non-performance is probably more likely than injury at this point. I don't see any options from the minor leaguers for any of the AA/AAA starting staff to be ready in May if need be. It isn't like the past where AA guys can come straight up, I think they need to get starts in AAA to get used to the ball before they can come up, that is my assumption at least.
  8. How much surplus value does Stearns have?
  9. In comparison to MadBum and the deals of this off season I would agree that it's not an overpay. Depending on the vesting option criteria the length isn't toxic. However, this entire off season has been 1 giant overpay in comparison to the previous 2 years. I'm pretty content that MKE is laying low in a players market. The thing is the last two years are the outlier years. Every other year baseball inflation of 8% give or take is the norm. It doesn't pay to sit out and wait for next year, because next year will tack another 8% on contracts and go forward. This is the normal - at least until TV contracts come down.
  10. I'm not sure that statement is accurate at all. It's like the people saying the Reds will be bad again, and not challenge for the Central. I think both teams have greatly improved. Sorry I didn't put my statement in blue. I'll explain. The joke is the Brewers always pick up Gio. And the most logical reason they would pick him up is the White Sox would not be challenging for the playoffs, hence would be willing to trade him.

  12. Well we know the White Sox are not going to be that good this year. Gio will be available, as it is already a given the Brewers pick up Gio in July.
  13. It would seem to me, that there would be more diving at 1B in total over a season. That would seem to be a more injury prone exercise than running in the OF, especially for a back-tweaking-injury-prone player. But I really don't know for sure that the act of diving for a grounder is a more injury prone movement.
  14. Sign a $5-$10M free agent. Is there anyone other than Todd Frazier or Asdrubal Cabrera left?
  15. I think the opposite seems to be true around here. Everyone seems to say "let's see... how can I find a way to convince myself that this is a really, brilliant move?" See Anderson, Brett. Oh yeah, our 2018 rotation was filled with Cy Young candidates so we're really taking a step down from Chacin to Anderson. Chacin was pretty darn good in 2018. I hope Anderson is that good.
  16. Probably true, though depending on how he does in 2020 and how Garcia does and whatever other factors may be at play, they could decide to exercise his option. I think it would only be a net $11M to pick up the option. Unless something changed again in the press, I understood it would be a net $10M cost to keep him, as it was $2 buyout (sunk money).
  17. Am I bad at math or does this only add up to $19.5mm guaranteed? It is only $19.5M. I assume someone rounded up at some point in the story chain to get the tweet out there first. From mlbtraderumors: That brings Garcia’s actual guarantee to $19.5MM over two years, with a chance to top out at $29.5MM over a three-year term.
  18. Because you can't pick him up in the summer if he is already with your team.
  19. I would have taken Miley for this contract (or tacked on a little if need be). This will be one of those situations that we will see him enough to know who was right when it is all said and done.
  20. If the guy is at a position of need and he is just overpaid compared to production, but the production is adequate considering we have no one there like 3B - then sure.
  21. Donaldson. But not more than two years. Unless Stearns has a trade that is almost hatched, I don't see where we find a 3B. I would rather trade for someones AAA guy that "should be" ready for the majors, then pay the arm and leg. I'm not against both on two year contracts, may have to backload one of their deals.
  22. #2? We must really be in rebuild mode if he is the second best pitcher we got. Lol Hate to overuse the Moneyball analogy but I think it's pretty clear by this point that Stearns has successfully ignore the "old school" wisdom about what a starting rotation needs to look like. I think Anderson is another guy that can reliably give you 5.0 IP and then pass it over to the bullpen. Maximizing value rather than going all in on 1-2 star pitchers. I don't know if they are going to have the pitcher option flexibility in the pen to shuttle guys up and down as they have in years past. Plus the stay is now 15 days instead of 10, right? So better have less extra inning games this year.
  23. The thing is, Hader 2020 may not replicate that production either. There was something last year where there was some level of him getting figured out or him tiring or a tell on his pitch. If we get a good package, I am all for trading him.
  24. Yeah, you think Boras would have let him sign a three contract last year at the rates you are floating. Don't think so.
  25. I could see the Mets wanting a bit more. This isn't THAT much salary relief. Maybe they need one more lesser prospect, or maybe slightly less salary relief. I like this trade a lot though. Yeah, I would do the trade even if the Mets didn't kick in $2M. But I don't know the Brewers budget either though.
