  1. Well it pretty much is like that. Right now it is only a verbal promise, since you can't officially sign until July. The fact that the deep pocket teams know the team and the amount to beat for Lara only makes it easier for them to negotiate him away. And if you are a teen with no money, there is no way you don't take the biggest contract offer, even if he had a verbal deal with Milwaukee - and I wouldn't blame him.
  2. And others might say that a small market club is least able to afford to gamble because they can't buy their way out of a mistake. I agree that they can't really go to Segura in 2017 and look to get a decent discount to buy out any FA years as he will have some decent cash in his pocket after the first arby year. The ideal time would be if they approach him after this season, he still has only made basically $1M lifetime and he would get quite a bit more in 2015 with a new contract than as a pre-arby player and that gives the Brewers another year to see Segura perform against MLB pitchers.
  3. He is not a fluke in that he deserves to be on the field, but I think there is legitimate question on whether he is a .700OPS versus a .775 OPS player. I wouldn't pay him as if he were a for sure .775OPS player, and if that doesn't get the deal done, so be it. We do have five more years of his services guaranteed, that is a lot of time for circumstances to change.
  4. We know that RR doesn't like platoons, so chances are there won't be one at 1B, especially if he is platooning 2B (or vica versa).
  5. Well IIRC they signed two kids to $800K each last year (probably the money they saved on no 1st round pick). So they haven't necessarily put their eggs in one basket.
  6. Actually Law did the 10 prospects that just missed the list, so now he doesn't have any Brewers in his top 110, so he is back to being the most pessimistic. edit here is his Brewers top 10: 1. Tyrone Taylor, CF 2. Devin Williams, RHP 3. Nick Delmonico, 3B/1B 4. Michael Reed, OF 5. John Hellweg, RHP 6. Jimmy Nelson, RHP 7. Mitch Haniger, OF 8. Orlando Arcia, SS 9. Victor Roache, OF 10. Hunter Morris, 1B
  7. We know that Melvin is actually capable of cutting Gonzalez outright, so I am not worried about that one. But if he somehow gets a hold of Yuni again..... How much would he have to pay the Orix Buffaloes to negotiate with Yuni......
  8. No Brewers ranked in his top 100. From his chat: Norman (NY) I'm not shocked that no Brewers made the list but did any come close? Where would you rank Tyrone Taylor? Klaw (1:13 PM) Nobody came close. That's a really weak system.
  9. Ok the way you worded it there makes it sound like the buyout on the fifth year option is 5 or 1 million depending on injury history if the option doesn't automatically vest. The way it's worded in Shermans tweet and MLBTR to me sounds like the entire 2018 salary is either a 1 million dollar team option, a 5 million dollar team option or 13 million dollar vesting option depending on innings pitched, starts and injury history over the life of the contract. Somewhat like John Lackeys 500K 2015 option but even more complicated. The MJS had an article that was a little bit clearer. "If that option does not vest, the Brewers can exercise it for $5 million. The option cost drops to $1 million if Garza spends 130 days on the disabled list over any 183-day period for any injury." What I don't like about that option is that he could suck and still be healthy and pitching (like Suppan) and vest that fifth year.
  10. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10354393/houston-astros-top-farm-system-rankings-mlb Edit - Here is the paragraph on his criterion. To kick off my look at the best prospects in the minor leagues this week, I've ranked all 30 MLB farm systems from top to bottom, considering only the players who are currently in their systems and who have not yet exhausted their rookie of the year eligibility. (I use the same criterion for the individual player rankings that will be posted over the next three days.)
  11. ARam could always go to 1B if we traded for a 3b starter today.
  12. Exactly with interest rates at almost zero, it barely figures into the calculation but that's true on both ends so it's ridiculous for it to cause a hangup. Plus all teams are getting an extra $26 million from new tv contract so they should have cash available to handle it. First of all, the team isn't using general interest rates to calculate time value of money. They probably have debt or better uses of money that MA can put in the market to get a much higher return - which is the rate the Brewers are using for their time value of money calculation for deferring large contracts. You also need to consider the rate of baseball inflation, which is probably 2-3 times as high as the general inflation rate (and probably much more the last two years) and how the contract will look a couple of years down the road.
  13. There is no way they could know that a free agent pitcher of that level would be in the range they could afford, so by making that trade the lessen the need to sign a free agent. However, even knowing I was going to sign Garza, I still trade Aoki. I think they got a decent pitcher they control for years and Davis/Gindl slugging will make up for the drop in OBP and defense.
  14. Assuming they sign Garza, I would think that would increase the chances they sign KRod. KRod isn't going to cost that much I don't think - and now that they have "went for it", they would foresee winning more games and needed a veteran down in the pen for the late innings would be even more important.
  15. He was worth $700M in 2012 and the market has went up quite a bit since then. Even the value of the Brewers will have increased. I could see that he is technically worth a billion now easy, just not liquid. I have got to think that the Brewers are looking to deal a couple of their fringe MLB starters to get a young 3B or 1B. Or package their value with Weeks' negative value to free up some cash to pay for Garza. Maybe someone in the AL east needs to make a move now just to show they are making moves...
  16. I liked the Lohse signing and still do, but I couldn't get behind this signing if it is anything close to your estimate. Unless they are packaging his signing by trading young pitcher(s) to pick up a good, young 3B or 1B. Then it would work.
  17. If Green can't crack the lineup for Milwaukee at 3B, 2B, 1B where could he in MLB? So I don't necessarily see him leaving even if he is AAA come his option date. I suppose someone that doesn't have two 2B only types on the 25 man roster could use him as a utility player.
  18. Not a great hotel or anything, but if you have kids like mine that don't want to go to a waterpark type hotel, they would rather go to a hotel that has a bigger, deeper pool, we have found that the Best Western Airport fits that bill.
  19. I like Estrada to stay in the rotation, don't see any reason he should be moved, plus he will get paid like an arby starting pitcher. Unless Thornburg is really off in spring training, give him one spot in the rotation for a minimum 6-8 starts and see what he can do. Smith can stay in the pen. I wouldn't sign a free agent pitcher unless he is clearly a #2/#3 type and you are using your young pitcher(s) to trade for a young 1B or 3B. We have a bunch of #4/#5 types (for 2014) that have at least some MLB starting experience waiting in the wings if someone flops and/or gets injured: Smith, Nelson, Hellweg, Hand, Gorzy, Figaro, Burgos, Fiers.
  20. It would seem they have Herrera, K.Davis and not much of anything else that is even as good as Golson. So they can play him in CF in AAA. Unless Josh Prince is going to play CF as he waits behind Bianchi for the utility man role.
  21. Yeah, but if the Dodgers are trading for him, it is because they are planning on playing him at least to start the season. And if his at bats get close, then it is a headache for the Dodgers. Hence his contract will be vested or they get a grievance as Weeks wants the vested year, so Weeks is not nearly as valuable if you know it is only one year.
  22. If there would be enough additional income from adding a Japanese player that it made sense, the Mariners could always trade a young pitcher. That is never a problem. They could even package some overpaid player to get rid of at the same time to help on the cost side. I have no idea how much new revenue he would bring if any.
  23. Yeah, but they kept him through the first round of "cuts". So I'm thinking they like him enough to try and sneak him out of the 40 man roster.
  24. I did hear DM admit in an interview that he probably should have brought up Morris in September, so I wouldn't say they wrote him off.
  25. I will not rest easy until it is impossible for Weeks to reach 600 at bats for the season.
