  1. I’ve followed Severino closely after the trade - he was one of that year’s international signings I really liked in the same class as Lara, Johan Barrios, and Juan Baez - but he hasn’t impressed too much. Had a great showing in FCL last year (Lara was at high A, Baez at low A for reference). I think Severino could be a late bloomer but he is at best the third best position player from that class. Strikes out a lot and has some power he is tapping into, and we have a few players of that profile now.
  2. Tyler Bryant has company .... bring it!
  3. Oh hey look minor league baseball is back. 🤩 I got together with a friend for a night out that has been months in the planning, so missed the second half opening night, bummer. But just from box scores and comments here some observations.... 1. Didn't put the A-team starters out across the org. No Hardin, M. Rodriguez, Henderson etc. 2. Yes, Jadher Areinamo needs, absolutely needs the challenge of a promotion. And with Adams/Wilken out, he can work with Pratt and Murray to make that Biloxi infield and line up much better. 3. Matt Wood is definitely looking to make himself the 3rd catching prospect (pending draftee signings) in the organization. But every time I call him out, he goes like 0-5 the next day, so I didn't say anything about him, nothing to see here... move along 4. Cortes- just throwing innings and being effective is good enough for me. I mean at this point he is the 4th/5th/6th starter so getting him back is bonus. But sure I'll be greedy and hope for more the next rehab start. 5. Man, I do hope that Travis Smith really is starting to figure it out. He was one of those guys who has the tools but the starts were not impressive and the stats were middling. I will throw Wichrowski in that group too as his low K rate, and high pitch count in year #2 of AA was disappointing, but if he can pitch deeper and get to 9+K/9IP, he can put himself in that top tier pitching prospect log jam (with Henderson, Rodriguez, Patrick, Crow and Hardin). 6. Talking about middling results - I love watching DeBerry pitch, but just too much contact and not enough put away and a bad inning or two just ruins what should be great starts. I am hoping for a switch to turn on for him. But reality is he was drafted/signed so that we could get Renz/Dubanewicz/Broughton. 7. That top 4 in Carolina - Payne-Adamczewski-Made-Pena - could make that offense click again, love to see those 4 together for now. 8. Finally, Jorge Quintana is the forgotten bonus baby from the '24 IFA class, and overshadowed by Anderson, Paulino and Corobo who were lower bonus signings. But Quintana after his 8-40 start in the ACL has done quite nicely, and reportedly is a true SS defensively, so I am holding out hope that he will join his mates Anderson/Pena/Made in Carolina sometime this season. Maybe Encarnacion too.
  4. Yes in the 1990s-early 2010s we were lucky when developed pitchers (Sheets, Gallardo were like it) that we routinely made trades for pitching or bad FA signings (Sabathia, Greinke, Marcum; Suppan, Garza). And somewhere in 2016-2018 time frame they started to develop pitchers (Peralta, Woodruff, Burnes) or take marginal pitchers and get great years out of them (Choucin, Miley). Since 2021 it’s been really really good. On a side note -does anyone have a running list of NDFA for the past few years? It seems like last year was low (Seppings, Gillis, Langhorne, Hostetler, Fielder, did I miss someone), and some years like much more. This years seems higher or at least earlier in terms of signing/announcements.
  5. I agree but someone will go down - and not sure who - which is a nice problem. Unfortunately, regression, slump or an injury will make it work out. Wish that wasn’t the case and we had 12-13 deep pitching pool that remains effective.
  6. Well AAA has Henderson, Patrick, and likely Myers who are all on the MLB bubble with the depth. Plus another pitcher (Priester or a reliever) will join when Cortes is activated. And they have Crow and can call up Kuehner most likely. So lost lots of pitching depth, but still have it.
  7. The post that Spencer re-posted says "Mainieri says that Luke Roupe will accept his draft slot and sign" So that mean he accepted $150K I wonder? If so that is impressive indeed for a HS player with leverage to go at "slot". Maybe just wanted to start his pro career.
  8. Ugh. This one hurts, although I suspected it. Yikes. I assume he is effectively down for the year? Hoping this young man can get healthy and back on the mound soon.
  9. Yeah that sounds a lot like last Friday's box score 😳 Today was a 4-0 loss sadly ... and Kevin Garcia seems to be the only Complex Crew hitter hitting these past few days 😩
  10. I would think that by picking Cairone in that spot they had an idea of his bonus wishes and that they are in line with that pick, otherwise they may have selected someone else, knowing that can't fumble this pick. I have no information to reference, but just imagine that would be smart business, and thus an "out of left field" selection because they may have had a close to a pre-arranged deal as you get with a 2nd rounder. So probably right at slot money. Just a hunch. Agree with your other options, and feel hopeful they can get at least 4 and up to 6 of the post-10th-round selections.
  11. If I were to guess (and I'm not right often), I would say Hughes, Underwood, Brock, Coil and Mills are the 11-20 rounders that they will sign. The team has usually done well, and typically they sign their 11th/12th rounders, and usually sign between 4-7 of those 10 selection. So I see a floor signing 4 of them, and it would not expect more than 5-6 of them given the higher end HS profiles, if I were to guess.
  12. Thanks for the break down, really interesting. Still half of the draft is HSers. Also - Still the most position players since 2022. (2023 and 2024 it was 5 position players drafted). And it’s just above 1/3 of the selections (8 of 22). Just keep drafting pitchers.
  13. @JCREW - I think that there could be a provision to add some additional bonus money for Rounds 11-20 that could help out some - like increase the amount you could go over slot be a certain percentage based upon things like market, prior success, etc. Make it an incentive to try to draft and develop players. Again unlikely, and could be too complicated, and big market teams will push back a lot.
  14. DSL Blue lost, but DSL Gold wins scoring 10 runs on only 5 hits, wow. Nice pitching lines by both Garcias (Derlin and David). ACL Crew is one Kevin Garcia HR and one Frederi Montero walk away from being perfect gamed. Down 9-1, and Hayden Robinson did not have a great outing again. It is tough sledding coming back from surgery, and hope for the best for him as he continues, and most importantly that he feels good and continues to recover well and stays healthy.
  15. So wait. he is a pitcher, formerly a Midwest player in Illinois, now from new Jersey, and had TJ surgery in HS. So he hits the "Brewers Draft Profile" Bingo card on all accounts.
  16. I think that even some of us (or just me) who maybe didn't like the draft so far (and it's just an opinion based on gut and irrational wishes for other picks or profiles), but have learned to wait until it's over to see the whole process, and then also have some trust in the scouts and front office. There will be a real head scratcher at some point, but that head scratcher could be the next Craig Yoho type pick.
  17. I think the true loss is not the pick, but the bonus pool money. Brewers were top 10 in bonus pool money prior, and now are middle of the pack I believe, which can affect what they can do with rounds 11+ Not saying it was a bad move, but the player not picked may not be as critical as the money, just like last year Blake Burke I feel didn’t make/break the Burnes trade, as much as if a Dubanewicz or Renz or Broughton succeed since all of them don’t get signed without that extra money in the global pool.
  18. Loading up on more arms and potential impact bats. Ok that sounds about right. Impactful hitting tools without necessarily concern for defensive home - Tyler Black, Luke Adams, Brock Wilken, Eric Bitonti, Mike Boeve, Josh Adamczewski, Blake Burke, Andrew Fischer, Brady Ebel. Pitchers have now accounted for 39 of the last 51 selections I believe going back to the last three picks in 2022(nine of which signed but still just using picks and positions). ‘that’s round 18-20 of ‘22; 16 of 21 picks in’23; and a 17 of 22 picks in’24; now 3 of first 5 picks tonight.
  19. Potentially- but also assign more players to the corner infield depth now with Ebel and Fischer to join Adams, Bitonti, Boeve, Burke and Wilken - so 7 guys to try to take 3-4 spots in the future roster (1B, 3B, DH, and bench bat). Good to have serious competition to push each other, protect the team against an injury or a player stalling out, or a trade chip. Maybe one of them is the next LaPorta - traded with high value for a game changing player.
  20. I mean yes. Early season Carolina was mashing, winning and then Biloxi caught fire. On may 24th the big league club was 25-28. Now 31 -12 since. Biloxi still competing despite losing Adams and Wilken to injuries, Crow to promotion, and recently missing Pratt. Wisconsin was red hot for a stretch that just happened to coincide with Dinges promotion through his injury. Carolina could not lose early, but now struggling a bit as Made and Pena are pushing past the game/at bats they had all last season, and losing Dinges (promotion), Payne for a stretch. So yeah the past week was a big downer in the minors. But I’ll take the overall results, pray for health and safe return to action for the injured players, and excited to read about the newer pool of prospects that will enter the organization starting tonight. (Even if I know I will be scratching my head at first with their first few selections, but the past 2-3 drafts have made me trust in their ability to evaluate and have a cohesive plan) yeah I’ll take it. Thanks @Ro Mueller for manning the fort of the minor league updates today! And as well as @Joseph Zarrand @sveumrules among several others these past few days. And welcome back @MudcatsfaninBrunsCO
  21. This is the compensation for not signing Levonas, correct. We traded out Competitive Balance pick (#33). Either way any of these guys could help. We will add about 3-5 names that we will add to the prospect list now, and possibly another 3-8 more guys who will possibly thrust themselves into the prospect discussion over the next few years.
  22. A healthy (or confident?) Payne, and a not slumping 3TO Bitonti along with the dynamic duo of Made/Pena make this offense look a lot better. And a very professional hitter who could DH or play the field would look nice - hopeful for a successful rehab and return to Carolina for Adamczewski.
  23. Thanks again for the explanation of the minor league rule 5 @Jim Goulart
  24. Some random observations…. 1. Tate Kuehner-his season at AA this year statistically looks a lot like his season start at A+, so if not for a crowded AAA rotation, I would think he could move up. Is he now on the prospects lists (he is on the radar, just not on lists per se)? Or just not enough ceiling in a deep system to pick up like a late teens to mid 20s ranking? 2. Zavier Warren should move up to AAA if/when promotions come up from high A. I don’t know if he has “earned” it statistically since he is having a similar season to 2023. But he has earned it from a time perspective. He will not be 40-man rule V protected, and I don’t know the rules for minor league rule 5. Also would he be a minor league FA after the 2026 season? 3. Jaron DeBerry has stuff, but he cannot pitch multiple clean innings. Not sure with him and I trust the Brewers player and pitching development. But this year it was the other college pitcher, Holobetz, who has been performing well (at least through last weekend when I looked it up), and I hope he is not the regret from the Priester trade as being in the list of PTBNL. 4. Congrats to Travis Smith on getting his first two professional wins in successive starts. If he can get it going and see high A this year that will bode well for the system and for the ‘24 draft. 5. Adamczewski is on rehab so will join Carolina at some point. Which of his current teammates will join the Mudcats this year - Handelfry Encarnacion, most likely. What about Fielder, Quintana (decent numbers now after his horrific start)? Or Montero and Paulino ?? And pitching wise, will Renz join his draft class mates? Could Mercado or Mercedes bump up as well, or A..Bravo? Last - I am still trying to figure out the plan for Bjorn Johnson - good performances mostly, but only in relief and usually multi-inning relief. Interesting to watch moving forward this season and next.
  25. That is an excellent question. I thought that was why the moved it - to make a weekend event that comes during the schedule break and also try to package it all and get more eyes. Whether that happens is a question I don’t know. But still better than having it way before the college World Series when every team dreads seeing their top draft pick get hurt.
