  1. I think we can go back to hailing Jack Z. as the best GM in the game now.
  2. I don't think I can consider a pitcher who only strikes out four batters in a span of seven innings completely dominant. The point about luck is not that he was giving up loads of line drives, it's just that to only strike out six batters in a game and get 21 outs (20, as there was a CS) in the field without one bloop dropping for a hit or one ball finding a hole, is extremely improbable.
  3. This signing is turning into an absolute disaster. At this point, I don't feel comfortable projecting Wolf as anything better than a 4.75 - 5.00 ERA pitcher, although I am more than likely just overreacting to his epic suckitude...I keep telling myself he can't be this bad, but he continues to amaze me...
  4. Well, it was fun while it lasted. As annoying as Ghana's late game antics were, I can't hold it against them without holding it against every other team in the tournament, and I'll definitely be cheering for them to bring Africa its first world cup on home soil now. Nothing to be ashamed of for the U.S., they made it to the round of sixteen, which is probably right where they belonged. Just too many defensive breakdowns to make a serious run. Still plenty of great soccer coming up, though. Time to watch the English bow out to the Germans.
  5. Great strike. I thought that was going wide!
  6. Maybe they're not in the top 10 in OPS because they haven't been playing the Brewers.
  7. His option vests if he is healthy and in the top 4 in Cy Young voting next year OR in the top 2 in Cy Young voting in 2012. What are the odds we could start a campaign and get that vote rigged, a la Rory Fitzpatrick in the NHL all-star game: http://en.wikipedia.org/w...zpatrick_voting_campaign The first step is attack ads against Lincecum, Halladay, etc... Sportswriters cast really dumb votes. If Zambrano could just be a decent reliever, even a set-up man, I could see him getting a couple of votes from incompetent sportswriters...
  8. They still have to pay him, which makes this all the better.
  9. Not too often you hear about a guy getting out of a bases loaded jam in a no hitter. Congratulations to Jackson.
  10. He'll be back coughing up leads in the 7th inning within one week. You can bet on that.
  11. Nothing makes a rough Brewers season better than the comedy that often takes place in Chicago. Talk about a fall from grace for Zambrano. Two more years at $18MM per year and we get to enjoy every moment of it. I thought the Cubs were going to be bad this year, but I didn't think they'd be this bad. Aramis Ramirez is hitting .166/.234/.282/.516 this season. It looks like he has completely lost it, and unless he's crazy, he'll be picking up his $14.6MM player option for next season. Soriano is hitting the ball well this year but is still a complete albatross in the outfield. Vitters has struggled in AA this year. I love it.
  12. At what point does Lawrie play into this? He could very easily be ready to come to the majors by 2012, and he could quite likely be a much better fielder than Weeks by that point. Ever since I said I was worried about Lawrie, he has been on a tear. His K% is down to 22.1, and he now has a line of .299/.359/.497/.856 as a 20-year old in AA. His BABIP is .367, which is high, but not completely unreasonable for someone with his speed. If Lawrie keeps progressing like this, I say we let Weeks walk and take the draft pick (s), if that's possible.
  13. It's just a matter of risk versus reward. This outing alone won't kill him, but these things do add up over the course of a long season.
  14. I don't know, in terms of probability, I'd guess this is more like a 30-35 inning baseball game. Just thinking simply, there have been 59 times someone was up by one game, each of those 59 times the person trailing won the set. (1/2)^59 = 1/576460752303423488 Now, my coin flip assumption might not be fair, but that is absolutely absurd. Historically, what are the odds of an inning where both teams score the same number of runs? This is far longer than any tennis match ever, and it's not even close.
  15. USA vs. Ghana Germany vs. England
  16. And I think herein lies the issue that fans often have with selling high: General Managers are typically not as sensitive in evaluating player performance based on recent results as we believe they are. If we can all sit here and go 'hey, we know Hart isn't really this good', certainly GM's don't think he really is. It's not like we have some piece of information they don't have. There are bad GM's, and good GM's make dumb decisions, but most likely there are very few teams that will be willing to offer much for a corner outfielder who (being extremely generous) projects to hit something like .280/.350/.500/.850 with poor defense, given that he is making $4.8 million this year and will likely make something like $8 million next year (another thing to point out - even though a team that trades for a guy like Hart didn't reap the benefits of his hot start, they will pay for it the next season!).
  17. That was awesome, but I think I scared my neighbors living below me and I definitely took some skin off my elbow in celebration. Excited to watch the Ghana game now. They're my second favorite national team, so I'm hoping for a Ghana win and a Serbia win. I'm just happy the U.S. is through though.
  18. HOLD THIS LEAD!
  19. ^ Pittsburgh is definitely a pierogi town. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5318009 Apparently he was just re-hired. The Pirates are now my favorite to win the central.
  20. Although they didn't advance, I was happy to see Bafana Bafana go out in style, with a win that I'm sure everybody outside France (and maybe some in France, at this point) enjoyed.
  21. Going along that same line, What would Vladislav Tretiak, Vyacheslav Fetisov, Valerei Karlamov, Vsevolod Bobrov et. al been able to do in the NHL? How many home runs would Sadaharu Oh been able to hit in MLB? (my uneducated guess is 500)
  22. Flight of the Conchords - Boom
  23. I agree that a good manager should inspire his players, I just question how much it can really help a player with poor defensive skills like Braun. It doesn't seem like he isn't trying; he seems to take his defense very seriously. Just as a manager cannot inspire David Eckstein to sock 20 homers, a manager cannot inspire a guy like Braun to be an average defender. He just doesn't have the skills, even if he gives a good effort.
  24. I think the best option for the Brewers would be for Edmonds to basically sit back and take a PH/injury reserve role. However, I wonder if it would be best for the Brewers to drop him before he starts to hit his incentives. He gets an additional $.115MM for each of 200, 225, 250, ..., 425 PA's. It's not a huge amount, but it is something to consider.
  25. First off, it's 8.2 innings. Second, Duncan fixed Suppan. He is clearly back to being an all-star quality pitcher.
