  1. Here's the thing about doing "free work" for a company: if you're doing it for free, unless you're doing one hell of a job, why are they going to start paying you for it? It sounds all well and good and it was something I did right out of college but it never got anywhere because as soon as I was done with something I would never hear from them again until they wanted more free work. When it comes to graphic design, there really isn't such a thing anymore. That's what I went to school for and tried to get into until I just gave up. Aside from big time ad agencies, companies aren't looking for designers anymore, they're looking for web developers or marketing people who can also make pretty pictures (or in most cases all three).
  2. I had read that he has a daughter who is very ill. If true, this was probably an easy decision for him to make.
  3. Welcome to the "real world." The way you get a job these days is to have 5-10 years experience and not be over the ago of 50 or be buddy-buddy with someone who makes those decisions.
  4. If you're trading for Kemp hoping to turn him into a first basement, you're moving the wrong person. You move Braun to first and put Kemp in right.
  5. A small drop in velocity for KRod shouldn't affect him too much as his best pitch has always been his changeup. Obviously at some point the fastball velocity and changeup velocity get too close and you wind up like Trevor Hoffman, but KRod's not there yet.
  6. That's a lot of money and Kemp has gotten rather over rated since his 1 really good season in which he put up a 147 OPS + (Braun has a career 146 OPS + and Kemps is 126). Kemp will actually be paid more this year than Braun ever will in his current contract. Weeks, Roache, and Thornburg is not even close. The Dodgers are pretty set at every position except 3B and 2B. Weeks does nothing to help them. They might like Ramirez but that seems to negate the point of the trade. Any trade would start with Nelson and probably Thornburg. Logistics not withstanding, where would he play? You can't take Gomez out of CF and I doubt Kemp's pride would let him to accept playing a corner spot.
  7. Iwakuma is only going to miss Spring Training time and then maybe 2 or 3 starts during the season to get his arm into shape. Even so, Seattle doesn't really have anything that's a worthwhile upgrade over what the Brewers have now. Maybe Nick Franklin, but they would be wise to hold on to him.
  8. There are only limits in the sense that there will be penalties for going over but the limits won't prevent a team from over-spending in one particular offseason. The Yankees have already said they are going to spend much more than they are allowed this offseason which makes me think this guy's going to be a Yankee. Whatever the Brewers offer the Yankees will just tack on another 500K or so to get him to sign.
  9. Like I said in my post, he's a bonafide Major League player, no doubt about that. He's not terrible at anything (maybe power hitting) but he doesn't do any one thing especially well either. He's great for a small market team during his arby years because he's effective and cheap. If he was still with the Brewers I would be in favor of going year to year with him and then letting him walk. He has a career OPS+ of 100. He's basically a younger Aochi. I don't think too many people would have been in favor of signing Aochi to this deal (provided he was the same age as Brantley).
  10. Unless the player will help the team this year, trading Estrada makes no sense. Mark and Doug built a team to contend now and creating a hole in the rotation for help a few years down the road won't fit that MO. Nelson or Thornburg might fit that spot but I don't think you can hope for that if you are trying to contend this year.
  11. Aside from when Derek Jeter hosted SNL and while playing a Yankee wife said that "Derek Jeter looks like The Rock had sex with a muppet" I have never cared for him.
  12. I don't see what the big deal is. Melvin could have spent money or prospects to make upgrades and he wisely didn't. Platoons work great when you can't have a lineup of above average. However, if your manager is a guy like Roenicke who plays the hot-hand or veteran instead of sticking to the splits it's a recipe for disaster.
  13. That makes sense too, sort of.
  14. Brantley seems like the kind of guy who's just good enough to keep through his arby years but not worth it to hold on to when it comes free agency time.
  15. According to the Texas Rangers website, Prince will wear #84. Joakim Soria has 28 and 1984 is Prince's birth year (at least I'm assuming that's he picked it). I hope he keeps it.
  16. i've heard CostCo makes a terrific sheet cake. stick a He-Man and Wonder Woman action figure on there and i'd say you're good. I've been pushing for a DQ ice cream cake but apparently that's too expensive.
  17. Nice. I see what you did there, even if it was unintentional. It's good of you to realize that the day might be tough for your cousin. Offering him an out if he needs it seems like a thoughtful gesture. Wasn't on purpose and it's even more fitting because we (she) haven't picked a cake yet.
  18. Reynolds will be the starter. Francisco and Overbay are only around in case Ramirez gets hurt and then Reynolds will play 3rd.
  19. I've complained about wedding stuff earlier in the thread but I think this takes the cake: My cousin and his wife are getting divorced. Apparently she thought it was ok to have a boyfriend as well as a husband. My cousin is standing up in my wedding. The reception will be the same place that his was, with the same caterer and DJ, and a lot of the same people, and only 2 days away from what would have been their wedding anniversary. Only a few people know about the divorce and no one has said anything to me yet but I kind of feel like I would be making him re-live his wedding the way we currently have it planned.
  20. Good reference on Wade Miller. I am too lazy to look up the numbers right now, but he always seemed to kill us every time. Wade Miller career vs. Milwaukee: 11-2, 102.2 IP, 2.98 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 8.4 K/9 Wade Miller career: 62-46, 894.1 IP, 4.10 ERA, 1.359 WHIP, 7.5 K/9 So, yes, he killed us. But to be fair he was pitching against some pretty terrible Milwaukee teams.

  22. I don't see how he's an "ace". Signing him would give the team four #1 or #2 pitchers with Lohse, Garza, Gallardo, and Burnett and one of the top rotations in the league. I don't think it would be a bad deal but it's just not going to happen.
  23. If we knew the personal lives of all professional athletes we would think 75% of them are scumbags.
  24. I just don't get it either and I've pointed out the stats plenty of times. The guy is as good, if not better, than Gallardo. I was just reading some preseason fantasy stuff from before last year. Estrada was the only starter in MLB in 2012 to have a k/9 above 9 and a bb/9 below 2. If you went to a k/9 above 8 and bb/9 below 2 the list is Estrada, Sabathia, and Cliff Lee. So are we to ignore that he's going to be 31 and has yet to throw more than 138 innings, and threw just 128 last year, while Gallardo has been a workhorse the last 5 years? I think it's more amazing how there have been three posts where people have said he's as good or better than Yo based on two seasons with 100+IP and none with morr than 138. He's a great pitcher...for the back of the rotation. But I certainly don't think teams would be in a rush to trade for him, so I dont think it's denigrating him to compare the aforementioned trade scenario with the Cordero/Weeks scenario. I've posted it many times. Estrada's rate stats as a starter are all the same or better than Gallardo's. I'll buy the innings arguments but those have been limited by two hamstrings injuries and I'll take 138 innings of Estrada a year over 200 innings of a lot of other pitchers.
