Pitchers wouldn't do it if it took place in December. They are not going to get ramped up to pitch after having only a few weeks off when they are only a few weeks from spring training. The best time would probably be right before the season starts. Middle to end of Marchish. -
Brewers/Gomez avoid arbitration

He had a .305 OBP last year. He was a slightly above average offensive player for a CF. When you add in baserunning and defense he was certainly above average overall which makes this a bargain. The original OBP is in reference to JJ Hardy, not Carlos Gomez. Other than hitting a few more homers Gomez was the player he'd been his whole career last year. He didn't walk much or hit for average but played great defense and stole some bases. -
If he puts up a respectable 2013 I think it's time to move him next offseason. He's going to get expensive pretty quick and closers are greatly overvalued in trades.

After reading the story all I can say is "who cares"? No laws were broken. No NCAA rules were violated. Manti is either a dufus or a publicity hog and either way it falls into the "no story" category. The whole thing is TMZ material.

The Nationals have a lot of money to spend and Soriano has been one of the best relievers for a few years now. Is it a lot of money? Yes. Is it ridiculous for Washington to do this? Not so much. -

Agree with all of this except the no single, young person staying in small town Wisconsin part. People doing hiring have no clue what it's like in the job market.

Yes, this is my biggest complaint. A "Riches" team like NY can QO any player they wish and take on the payroll if accepted or lose the player, gain an added draft pick. Meaning NY's Riches come either to their ML team or falls in to their Minor League system. That certainly is possible but Kyle Lohse is a great example of why it won't happen too often. Lohse is a terrible pitcher who put together a good season in a contract year. If he accepted the Cardinals QO he would be grossly overpaid but for only one year. He didn't and now no one wants him. I would not be surprised if he doesn't sign until after the season starts. As much as we want to believe the rich teams have unlimited budgets, they don't, and having a Kyle Lohse-type player making QO money will not be good for their franchise.

There are quite a few decent relievers out there. I'm not sure why those guys haven't been signed yet.

That's a good point. The Brewers haven't signed their token old, washed up guy who will inexplicably get too much playing time yet.

Del Rio winning was just to increase the ratings. The Rock is going to be on Smackdown and they've already released the news of Alberto winning so they are just trying to squeeze out as many viewers as possible.

The QO could essentially become like the Franchise Player tag in the NFL. Which is definitely a good thing for baseball. If places like Milwaukee and Pittsburgh can keep their homegrown talent at somewhat reasonable prices for a few more years that is good for the game.

Teams seem to claim anyone and everyone during the offseason only to DFA them a few days later. Doug probably saw him and thought he might be ok but had no plans of actually holding on to him.

A player can be traded after signing with a team the player just has to approve the deal before hand. For example say the Brewers wanted to sign Lohse but they didn't want to give up that first rounder. The Brewers could work out a deal with the Cardinals in where they would get a prospect in return for Lohse. Though I believe this is highly unlikely to happen as Lohse is not worth a prospect to give up. I do believe though that if the Cardinals would not have given Lohse the QO he would have been signed by someone by now. I believe Selig has said he will not allow that to happen.

If a team would sign Lohse to a minor league deal would they forfeit the pick? So could a team conceivably sign him to a minor league contract and give him a behind the doors guarantee that he would make the major league roster?

I've always wondered when they list the speed at batting cages if it is the actual speed of the ball or the 60.5 foot equivalent.

Lance Berkman to Rangers - 1/10m

If the healthy 2011 Lance Berkman shows up it's a steal. If it's the 2010 version, not so much. Even so with that lineup in that ballpark and being in the AL he should put up some good numbers...if he can stay healthy. -

I got sick of Rome really fast when he was on 107.5. I can't say there is any sports talk I listen to anymore. I don't spend all that much time in my car either though.
