  1. I wouldn't trade Cain. We have plenty of payroll flexibility. We can open the season with the following: CF- Cain, with Gamel, Yelich, and Grisham backing up LF- Braun (60 starts)/Grisham RF- Yelich, with occasional Grisham/Gamel starts 3b- ? Moose or Shaw. I'm kind of wondering if the Brewers will SS- Arcia, Perez backing up 2b- Hiura 1b- Thames (102 starts)/Braun (60 starts) C- Pina with Nottingham backing up We don't have enough outfield depth in the minors to start dealing our starting caliber outfielders.
  2. I don't know if it's the knee injury. But as he evolved, I liked his approach less. Early in his career he was a terrific strike thrower. It seemed I was always comfortable he'd give up 2 or fewer runs, and we'd always be in the game. I remember noting how in his draft scouting video AND 1st seasons, he had an incredible knack for striking out hitters looking in belt-high heaters. Early in his career, he was a true 4-pitch pitcher, and I seem to recall he used his curve and changeup as deadly weapons. Later in his career it seemed he was a 2-pitch pitcher, relying more on a slider. He went from attacking hitters to nibbling.
  3. I would quibble with this a little bit. They certainly have a bad track record, no issue with that. Gallardo was a good pitcher whose career was derailed by an early injury. He was never the same after that injury against the Cubs, never had close to the same command from that point on. He still posted an ERA+ of 108 or better for 9 of his first 10 seasons. He certainly is better than Woodruff at this point. I don't think the pen was a big weakness way back in spring training. Jeffress has been bad and Knebel got hurt which really diluted it. This was a really bad trade deadline to go for it hardcore, people don't like it but it is true. Not making big moves was the smart approach here. I still don't like what we did mind you. Aguilar is better than his stats suggest this season and Pomeranz is just not a good target even if Dubon doesn't turn out to be much. Jeffress see,so to have turned a corner recently. I’d trust him with more save chances, allowing Hader to be deployed when several lefties are coming up, whether 6th or 9th inning
  4. Hader sure has been rough at times. Shows how Knebel's injury and Jeffress' regression have really hurt things, along with not acquiring a closer like Soria. Hader last year dominated as a 6th-8th inning guy. But as a closer with a heavier workload, he has missed his spots too often. 30 hits, 13 homers!?!?
  5. Gio was more or less a league average pitcher in 2018. This year he has pitched a total of 50 innings and was released by one team. Guys like that don't typically have teams banging in their door for multi-year deals. I think he's definitely someone we could look to bring back for 2020 though. Was Gio released? I thought he opted out?
  6. Pretty sure they’re going to make the playoffs this year, and I like their chances next year. You seem to think Chase Anderson isn’t good. He’s been very good for us since we acquired him
  7. I hate that yet again the Brewers visit AZ during June/July
  8. I'm irked, since he's dropped more clean pitches (not in dirt, or that made him reach far) than I ever remember for a catcher. He's had numerous strikes he dropped resulting in balls called. I'd take Manny Pina EVERY day over him defensively.
  9. We have a lot of competition...that's good. Most aren't candidates for regression, seeing as they're having bad or injured years. At this point, this is how I would rate things: locks: Woodruff, Anderson who should get the next look: Nelson, Houser, Gio Gonzalez (seems to say nice things about Milwaukee, the club, etc) Needs to show something--could be in AAA, rotation, or pen: Burnes, Peralta Bring back at right price or for depth: Lyles (I like how he's striking out more these last two years as a fit for our park, no matter the role) Trade: Davies (he had a nice start to the year. His loss of velocity made him a novelty in April and May, but his ball doesn't appear to be moving as much and is getting hit hard)
  10. Hard to say. He has done little to nothing for them in all these years. His last few outings have been an improvement. But I think we have more important people to protect. Having said that, I'm not a scout and don't know how he's throwing. A lack of success isn't always an indicator. Plus remember we have 4 players on our 60-day DL that will fill roster spots
  11. wow, Corbin Burnes. Last 2 starts he has gone: 4.2 IP 17H 15ER 1 BB 2 K's.
  12. Don't forget, last year we made it through September with 3 starters and 2 bullpen days. By early Sept we should have Woodruff back, Chacin hopefully working out kinks, Gio dealing, and perhaps Chase throwing well (then again, he was throwing well last year and we didn't pitch him). Expand our roster to 35, mostly with bullpen arms, many capable of going 2-4 innings. We did it last year, we can do it again.
  13. Here's the remaining games: Rangers (3) (2-1) Twins (2) (1-1) Nationals (3) (2-1) Cards (9) (5-4) Dbacks (3) (2-1) Cubs (7) Astros (2) (1-1) Marlins (4) (3-1) Padres (4) (2-2) Pirates (3) (2-1) Reds (3) (2-1) Rockies (3) (1-2) That would put us at 23-16. We would need to probably go 4-3 or 5-2 against the Cubs. Not quite as big of a streak to finish the year as last year, but still pretty darn strong. 87 or 88 wins. We need to beat the crap out of the Rangers, Marlins, Dbacks, Pirates, and Reds. We can't afford to get swept. Then we need to go better than .500 against the Cards and Cubs. And we also need those teams to beat each other up while struggling with some teams we beat.
  14. yes...lots of division games left, and we just need to tread until Sept 1
  15. I think we'll be low this offseason, but after next season our system will have a big jump. 2019 draftees, Rasmussen, Turang, Lazar, File, Ashby, and many others will be in line for 2021 roster considerations. And frankly, if Grisham was fairly rated for his age/performance and Hiura and Williams weren't also promoted, our minor league system would look better. Still, we need more hitters to take some steps forward.
  16. We've had some pitchers make nice steps forward this year. Part of the problem is we haven't seen that from hitters.
  17. Hasn't there never been a mutual option picked up? Moose seems to like Milwaukee. I wouldn't be shocked if the Brewers signed him to a modest 3 year $30-36 million extension after the season. That would allow the Brewers to consider shopping Shaw. Realistically, Stearns wants left-handed bats with versatility for Miller Park and our division. I see Shaw, Thames, and Moose returning. I don't see Grandal returning. It also depends if they feel Grisham is ready to stay in the majors.
  18. People are gonna feel awfully weird when we make the playoffs thanks to a September surge. Our rotation led by Woodruff, Gio, Chase, bullpen, and bullpen will guide us there. Nelson will show a lot in September.
  19. laser printers...they've never bugged me
  20. Only 3 games back entering the day, and not playing our best ball. Win 12 in a row and that locks up the division
  21. wow, can both AZ squads win on the same day?!?!?
  22. One thing to remember is that Chase has had 3 good years in Milwaukee now, including 2018. He was left off the playoff roster and didn't play a big role in Sept due to his propensity to allow homers and the Brewers' MUST WIN mentality.
  23. also, Shelby Miller with a 2nd straight solid start. Not trying to push him too deep in games. I wonder if the goal is to groom him for 2-3 inning stints while attacking guys, much like how it helped Woodruff learn to attack hitters.
  24. My guess is that the Brewers try to get 2-3 IP out of Devin Williams and 2-3 out of Peralta. I'd also expect Pomeranz for 2 innings. With Hader and Albers going today, the hope is probably that only one of them (at most) needs to go tomorrow.
  25. I don't understand how a young, seemingly uninjured pitcher with great stuff goes from being great to downright horrible. Really discouraging. The Brewers just can't catch a break with pitcher development. Woody was great this year, but seriously, come on. look at Roy Halladay's reinvention demotion to A-ball. For a long time he held the record for highest ERA in a season
