  1. That sounds like right on the money analysis to me. Packers already had 12 picks this year, not really much sense in acquiring many more (even when factoring in trade-up's later in this draft).
  2. Holy smokes, 13 spots?
  3. No, don't trade down. Huge falloff after those two IMO, can't miss out on both. I think they should go James just because of need but I wouldn't be a bit upset with Edmunds. Can't believe Edmunds has made it down this far.
  4. Now of course I worry about the Packers taking Kolton Miller.
  5. Outstanding. Vea to Tampa Bay. James or Edmunds will be available at #14. Someone would have to offer me a ridiculous boatload of picks to get me out of that spot now.
  6. If James and Edmunds are the next two picks, IMO that is worst case scenario for Green Bay. When balancing value and need, IMO there is a huge falloff after those two players. Vea may be of similar value, but I don't think the Packers can take him with Clark already locked down on the nose.
  7. Wow, Fitzpatrick to the Dolphins. Now Tampa Bay probably takes James. Bummer if the Packers miss out on all the top DBs, although it probably should have been expected.
  8. I'd guess the next three picks are some combination of Edmunds, Via and James...which would mean Fitzpatrick makes it to #14.
  9. Clinton-Dix will be a free agent and is coming off a bad, bad year. Has Josh Jones figured out where to line up yet? He had a full season and at the end still didn't appear to have the slightest clue as to what he was doing. Packers need all sorts of defensive backs, not just cornerbacks.
  10. Miami and Washington both need a big run-stuffing body. I think one of them takes Vea.
  11. That was a big risk for Tampa Bay moving below Oakland. The Raiders could take Derwin James here. Fitzpatrick also will be in the mix. Tremaine Edmunds should be in the mix too. Nice selection of players available for the Raiders. Turns out there were so many good players left that they moved down.
  12. I don't think there is an OT that's anywhere close to being worth the #10 pick. Also would say that same thing about #14, but I do think Mcglinchey could be a Packer depending on how things shake out.
  13. Unfortunately the Bucs only moved down to #12, so they can still pick Derwin James ahead of Green Bay.
  14. I agree with many of the experts and think Gutekunst will probably look to trade up for Ward, James or Fitzpatrick. There seems to be a pretty big drop-off in quality after them and the Packers desperately need defensive backs. I'm not one that buys the argument that the pass rush is just too ineffective. Their DB play was nothing short of a complete abomination last year (and the year before). If Gutekunst misses out on those three then I wouldn't be surprised to see him trade back. Jaire Alexander seems to have elevated himself from the next group, but considering his injury problems last year, I wouldn't be all that shocked if the Packer's board had Alexander, Mike Hughes, Isaiah Oliver and Josh Jackson with all about the same grade. I've seen enough references about Davenport maybe only being a fit as a 4-3 DE where I'd lean against thinking the Packers would take him at #14. I also am aware that they brought Vita Vea in but I think that's strickly a smoke-screen. He's best as a nose tackle and they already have Clark there. Spend the #14 pick on him and have to play either him or Clark as a 5-technique? I don't see it. I believe Mike Mcglinchey is a real possibility but see many mocks have him being off the board at #14. I personally like Calvin Ridley but it just seems like the general consensus has really sagged on him the closer it got to today. I'm guessing the Packers won't take him. I really see it as DB and just maybe an OL'man slides in there depending on how things fall. Here would be my guesses at the current draft spots. 1-14 = Jaire Alexander/CB/Louisville McGinn has Fitzpatrick falling to this spot and I would agree that if he makes it here then he is the pick. I just think Ward, James and Fitzpatrick are all off the board so I'll just go with the next highest rated guy which is Alexander. If Gutekunst follows Thompson's lead of not picking short corners then Alexander won't be the pick (5-10 1/4). But I think Gutekunst will really focus on speed at WR and DB in this draft, and Alexander seems to have the best combination of speed and fluidity among the CBs who are grading this high. But his injury problems from last year worry me, and is another factor that could stear Green Bay in another direction. 2-45 = D.J. Chark/WR/Louisiana State 3-76 = Tavarius Moore/S/Southern Mississippi 4-101 = Cole Madison/OT/Washington State 4-133 = Dorance Armstrong Jr./OLB/Kansas 5-158 = Genard Avery/ILB/Memphis 5-172 = Alex Cappa/OT/Humboldt State 5-174 = Avonte Maddox/CB/Pittsburgh 6-186 = Jordan Thomas/TE/Mississippi State 6-207 = Jester Weah/CB/Pittsburgh They may not pick a Badger, but at least here they get a Wisconsin player as Weah played his high school ball at Madison Memorial. 7-232 = Jamiyus Pittman/DT/Central Florida 7-239 = Cole Reyes/S/North Dakota
  15. I really, really, really want to see Woodruff back in the Brewer's rotation, but I think I'd stick with Suter for a few more starts...although he'll probably end up getting bumped soon enough when Miley is ready (the worst of all possibilities IMO...as in J.J. Hoover except in the starting rotation). 2016-2018 MLB numbers: -Brent Suter = 128 2/3 innings, 3.85 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 3.91 FIP, 112 ERA+, 2.97 K/BB -Jhoulys Chacin = 348 innings, 4.29 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 4.22 FIP, 96 ERA+, 2.06 K/BB -Zach Davies = 377 innings, 3.99 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 4.12 FIP, 108 ERA+, 2.79 K/BB -Junior Guerra = 203 innings, 3.50 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 4.65 FIP, 123 ERA+, 1.96 K/BB -Chase Anderson = 320 2/3 innings, 3.56 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 4.49 FIP, 121 ERA+, 2.66 K/BB Suter will obviously fail the eyeball test every single time. But is he really the worst pitcher in the Brewer's rotation right now? I'm not saying that he's not, but the numbers don't expose him as being a weak link.
  16. I know 4-pitch guys always get looked on as having to be starters, but I think Cole's control is just shaky enough where I think a team should be looking at re-making him as a reliever. Slash line against Cole the first time through the order this year is a staggering .364/.440/1.091/1.531 which indicates a move to the bullpen might not be a immediately smooth one. The problem is that it's almost like obtaining a Rule V pick. He's attractive enough where I can't see bottom end teams like the Reds, Marlins, etc letting him pass through waivers. So you have to trade for him with the idea he has to stay on the 25 man roster the rest of the year.
  17. I also don't think Perez or Sogard is in trouble, but there is no question that the Brewer's backup infielders aren't even meeting the low offensive expectations that Stearns probably had for them. With Arcia also struggling and Villar still somewhat of a question mark, Stearns would be wise to start lining up insurance policies. With the additions of Blanco and Saladino, it seems pretty clear that the Brewers either don't think Dubon is an MLB player OR they just don't feel that Dubon is ready for a MLB utility role. But I'd guess if we get past game 60, and Perez is OPS'ing .588 and Sogard is OPS'ing .437, then a move might need to be made at that time. I'd guess Sogard would be the odds on favorite to be the guy who is out, Blanco gets added to the 25 man roster and Saladino then becomes the top middle infield insurance policy. I'm not a very big fan of Blanco, and there is no question he was horrible with the bat last year, but from 2014-2016 he slashed .274/.337/.457/.795. Granted he's in a hitter's paradise, but if he keep hitting in AAA would it be crazy to think he might post something like .250/.310/.380/.690 in the big leagues? That slash line isn't real pretty but Perez has a career .669 OPS and Sogard sits at .633.
  18. The Brewers would be eating over 27 million in salary over the rest of 2018 and 2019 for taking on Martin Prado's contract. Even if the Marlin's really made this offer, I'd wager that the Brewers would turn it down due to the financial impact of Prado's 2019 salary (15 million).
  19. Scott Boras still receiving CPR after having heard that "pay cut" part.
  20. I don't think the Brewers have the money to eat Prado's salary for this year and next. But say they did, as the mock Marlin's representative I'd want something like this: Brewers get: C-J.T. Realmuto, IF-Martin Prado Marlins get: RHP-Luis Ortiz, OF-Corey Ray, RHP-Trey Supak, RHP-Zack Brown
  21. Right before the deals started, the Marlins apparently made it known that they wanted to trade Mike Stanton, Dee Gordon and Martin Prado and moving those three contracts would allow them to stay under their self-imposed payroll limit. They were able to move Stanton and Gordon but were not able to move Prado. I think he's the only player the Marlins would be looking to dump at this point (would have to be a pretty fancy deal as Prado would have to carry negative surplus value with the injuries really mounting up). Anybody else on their roster would likely command fair market value.
  22. When the catcher position slashes .197/.319/.328/.647. And the shortstop position slashes .169/.203/.225/.448. Third base chips in a very mediocre .250/.288/.408/.695. Second base sort of holds it's own but slashes a nothing special .270/.308/.392/.700. Then you only score 3.4 runs per game and are one of the worst offenses in baseball and the 1B/OF logjam, that includes Hernan Perez as a starting leftfielder 21% of the time, sure looks like a bust. Speaking of LF, .227/.275/.347/.622 doesn't help matters any. Right field not much better but at least has a .313 OBP which is one of the better marks on the team.
  23. And Perez hitting fifth in the lineup no less. I totally agree that it's so early in the season that batting lines should be pretty much ignored. But in this case Perez's season .152/.200/.333/.533 slash line is backed up by a career .254/.281/.387/.668 slash line. No wonder they can't score any runs! I actually like Perez as a member of the team. OK-enough bat for a middle infielder and his versatile glove is good for emergency or as a replacement to give other players a rest in blowout games. I think he is more deserving of a roster spot than Sogard. But he shouldn't be getting starts in a corner outfield spot and he shouldn't be hitting fifth in the lineup. Now watch him go out and hit two home runs today.
  24. Yeah, I don't get the sitting of Braun at all. I'm expecting a big rebound from Santana soon and if that happens then Braun could be looking at 2 or 3 starts per week. Thames has a poor OBP against righties (.277), but is still hitting at a .928 OPS clip against them. Aguilar survived the early season roster turnover and is OPS'ing 1.282 against lefties (granted in a very small sample size). To me it looks like the 1B door is closing on Braun. He should be getting all the at-bats he can be getting right now. Maybe he has an injury that they are not talking about? Just very frustrating to see Perez getting all these starts in left field. IMO one of the great benefits of making the Yelich/Cain deals is that the Brewers had those two plus Braun/Santana/Broxton/Phillips which really should have completely eliminated outfield starts from players like Perez and Thames. Very disappointing.
  25. I realize you wouldn't do it, but that's pretty close. As a mock Marlin's representative, I'd do a deal if Ray was substituted for Supak and Nottingham. So the deal would be Realmuto for Burnes, Erceg and Ray. Brewers could also throw in Bandy to clear the roster spot for adding Realmuto, but it would certainly qualify as an unnecessary part of the deal.
