Anthony Flores puts up the first zero of the evening for the AZ Crew top of four going strikeout. ground out, ground rule double, strikeout. -
Edgardo Ordonez ROE and an Antony Gomez single get two runs back for the AZ Crew to cut the deficit to 5-3 heading to top of four.

Jackson got done somewhat dirty in the third. Three ground balls to start the inning should have been all it took, but a pair of Luiyin Alastre errors opened the door for a wild pitch and single that scored another two AZ Reds. An Eric Bitonti walk and Gery Holguin single have a couple on for the Zona Crew with one down bottom of three trailing 5-1.

Yanez walked the second batter of the second frame too and was relieved by Isaiah Jackson, who promptly struck out his first batter faced. He then went walk, run scoring sharply hit ground out, walk, fly out to get out of the inning. Now 3-1 AZ Reds with the 7-8-9 hitters due up for the Zona Crew bottom two - Antony Gomez, Yannic Walther and Tyler Rodriguez.

Ismael Yanez had a rough start to the first going HBP, HBP, bunt single, ground rule double to score two AZ Reds. But he bounced back alright going line out. strikeout. strikeout to strand the runners on 2nd and 3rd and end the inning without further damage.

No injury would be the best news of all, but I’d say Clarke having a non season ending toe injury is better news than a season ending arm injury.

Not sure if anyone has followed up on it in the interim with the universal DH now in play and more & more guys cycling through the position annually, but back when The Book was published they found the DH Penalty was around 14 points of wOBA on average (or about six runs for every 500 PAs). Obviously some guys are more extreme than others, and some even hit better when DHing as every rule has exceptions, but for the most part players hit worse when DHing versus when they are playing the field.

League average OPS for LF is .714 this year, lowest its been since 2002 when FanGraphs positional splits begin. Previous low was .724 back in the 2014 deadball year. With how much league offensive environment changes year to year (league OPS is 704 this year after 734 in 2023 and 706 in 2022 and 739 in 2021 and 769 in 2019) its always best to use OPS+ or wRC+ to account for that instead of relying on historical benchmark OPS numbers that are easier or harder to reach depending on the myriad factors playing into that ever shifting leaguewide offensive environment.

I don't think this year has been cursed at all. Injuries happen, especially to pitchers and catchers. It's unfortunate, but all part of the calculus. DSL squad(s) have been insane to start the year, Carolina is in first place with the youngest pitching staff in the league and a bunch of legit prospects, Wisco is in first place with the 2nd youngest hitters and 3rd youngest pitchers in the league. The system as a whole is possibly as deep as it has ever been (even with all the injuries), hard for me to call that any kind of curse.

Here’s how the Brewers wins and losses have been distributed around those five three gamers… 10-3 (0-3) 7-2 (0-3) 3-0 (0-3) 16-9 (0-3) 8-4 (0-3) 1-0 so far. 15 of the team’s 33 losses (45.5%) have come while streaking. Winning streaks have been three games (x3), four games (x3), and five games for 26 of the team’s 45 wins (57,8%) coming via streak. That leaves them with a record of 19-18 when not in the throes of some streak or another.

Frelick may be the worst at hitting the ball hard, but he has actually been above average at getting hits (104 AVG+) and walking (110 BB%+). Obviously the lack of power (47 ISO+) drags the whole batting line down to below average (91 wRC+), but I’d say Sal has pretty much delivered right to where my expectation levels were entering the season. That said, I’d probably still have him as the odd man out when Mitchell is ready to return.

I guess I’m not seeing how Keston being a free swinger is a cautionary tale for Black, who has a much more patient approach and better contact skills. -

Brewers in the midst of their fifth three game losing streak of the season. Previous four three gamers were each followed by a win. If the Brewers lose today and STL wins, the Brewers division lead will be under five games for the first time since May 29th. -
Dylan O’Rae RBI double has stretched the Shuckers lead to 5-0 after six.

Francisco Mejia tripled and scored on a Yonny Hernandez ground out to break up the no hitter and shutout bottom of five so Nashville is only losing 14-1 now.

Wisco goes final with a 7-4 win. In addition to the cycle inning mentioned earlier, 25yo backstop Ramon Rodriguez homered twice while Eduardo Garcia went 3 for 5 with a double. Chase Costello came into a bases loaded one out jam bottom of the ninth and secured the win with a run scoring ground out for out twenty six and a fly out for number twenty seven.

Knoth finished at 5.2 scoreless with 2 H | 3 BB | 7 K which is his longest outing of the year, matches his high for strikeouts and is his second zero of the season so far dropping his ERA to 3.55. Brailin Rodriguez followed up with 2.1 scoreless (4 K) before Dikember Sanchez pitched a scoreless ninth (1 BB | 1 K). Lots of activity on the offensive side with six runs and twelve hits but Filippo Di Turi (3-6) and Miguel Briceno (3-5, SBx2) were the most active.

Logan Henderson has thrown five scoreless with 5 H | 1 BB | 6 K (73 pitches). Brock Wilken has doubled and Darrien Miller has doubled twice while Zavier Warren & Adam Hall have a pair of singles each as Biloxi leads 4-0 top of six.

Pretty remarkable that 76 games into the season the Brewers have only lost back to back games seven times. They are 3-4 to this point in the third game following those back to back losses.
