  1. From what I could find on Fangraphs splits JGJs wRC+ was at 65 through 06/21 with a 36.3% K rate. From 06/22 onward it has been 101 wRC+ with a 25.6% K rate.
  2. Sure, the odds are exponentially stacked against them, they are teenage kids in a foreign country. At the same time, the Brewers have completely overhauled their international department since Stearns & company got here with the fruits of those efforts starting to make their way stateside. The Carolina roster is overwhelmingly filled with international signings over drafted players. Not that long ago Freddy Peralta was a short RHP with nothing more than impressive K/BB ratios for the Mariners DSL/AZL squads, or Jackson Chourio was just another skinny Venezuelan SS with a million plus bonus.
  3. Looks like Osbriel Mogollon went 4 IP | 0 R | 1 H | 1 BB | 4 K in the other DSL game to lower his ERA to 1.04 on the season, People complain about how long MLB games are, but it’s just that much more time to dig into the minor boxes ?
  4. Bell makes perfect sense, DH vs RHP (129 wRC+ vs RHP since 2021) compared to 88 wRC+ vs RHP for McCutchen over the same time frame. And then 1B vs LHP (128 wRC+ vs LHP since 2021) compared to 90 wRC+ vs LHP for Rowdy since 2021. Agree that I wouldn't go higher than Valerio as a headliner though.

  6. Scrolling BRef on a slow night for the minor & major leaguers and noticed that Tyler Black ended his season with more BBs (45) than Ks (44). Hendry Mendez is almost there for Carolina with 48 BB / 53 K through 331 PAs (& still doesn’t turn 19 for three months). Small sample sleeper to maybe keep an eye on is Jose Caballero (listed 5’10” / 140) with 12 BB / 10 K through 81 PAs in the ACL.
  7. FanGraphs kicks off their annual Trade Value Series today… https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2022-trade-value-intro-and-honorable-mention/ Last year Burnes (#14), Woodruff (#19) and Peralta (#43) made the list & it looks like they’ll all be returning in 2022. Reading through the HMs it looks like there will be about twenty open spots on this year’s list, but don’t think the Brewers grab any. Adames would maybe be the best candidate, but only two more seasons of team control & production closer to good than great (38th in position player WAR over last calendar year), probably isn’t quite enough to crack the list.
  8. Jace Avina 297/434/638 (but 39 K / 12 BB in only 111 PAs) or maybe Luis Castillo 287/381/491 (more reasonable 25 K / 16 BB in 126 PAs) could be options for promotion up to Carolina to take Jackson’s spot. Tristan Peters 287/373/463 with 56 K / 42 BB in 349 PAs possibly up to Biloxi?
  9. Renfroe was at 122 OPS+ and 2.0 WAR entering the game. Nick Castellanos is at 85 OPS+ and -1.2 WAR with 4/80 left on his deal.
  10. They’ll get who pays for what at the stadium figured out with plenty of time to spare. The Brewers aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
  11. Building on the Freddy comparison a little, through his first 163 IP Peralta posted 113 ERA- | 93 FIP- | 100 xFIP- | 131 K%+ | 127 BB%+ splits. Since starting to put it together in 2020 Freddy is at 76 ERA- | 67 FIP- | 82 xFIP- | 145 K%+ | 105 BB%+ over 212 IP. So far Ashby has thrown 100 IP with 109 ERA- | 93 FIP- | 79 xFIP- | 121 K%+ | 116 BB%+ splits, so not quite as many Ks/BBs as young Freddy but it looks like most of Aaron’s ERA/FIP gap can be attributed to a fluky high HR/FB rate through his first 100 IP based on that 79 xFIP-. In terms of comps for Ashby’s high K/GB profile, here are the pitchers since 2021 with at least 100 IP and similar rates… Ashby (121 K%+ | 133 GB%+), Clay Holmes (118 K%+ | 173 GB%+), Emmanuel Clase (119 K%+ | 156 GB%+), Lance McCullers (115 K%+ | 136 GB%+), Blake Treinen (119 K%+ | 129 GB%+), Luis Castillo (111 K%+ | 127 GB%+), Ryan Pressley (139 K%+ | 120 GB%+). Holmes/Clase’s GB%+ are in another stratosphere & Pressley Ks quite a bit more, but it’s easy to watch Ashby pitch and see how he could end up somewhere around McCullers/Castillo if he sticks in the rotation or fallback to a high leverage pen arm like Treinen depending how his command develops.
  12. Obviously last year’s numbers were still held down league wide due to lingering COVID concerns, but the Brewers still came in 10th at 22,522 per game. That has bounced back nicely to 29,908 so far this season, but other teams (BOS, NYM, LAA, SFG, TOR) in substantially larger markets have bounced back better so the Brewers ranking has slipped to 14th. For reference here are Crew’s the pre-COVID per game numbers: 2015 (31,389 | 13th), 2016 (28,575 | 16th), 2017 (31,589 | 10th), 2018 (35,195 | 10th) and 2019 (36,090 | 8th).
  13. My understanding is that spending 20 days optioned uses the players option for that season. Hiura entered the season with one option remaining. Believe the new rule starting this year is players were limited to being optioned five times per season. If I’m reading his game log right, Keston has been optioned twice so far this year, a dozen days between May 5-18 and now thirteen days (if the ASB counts, less if it doesn’t) since July 10.
  14. Not much of note in the boxes for a pair of DSL losses aside from RF Yeison Perez (2-4, 2B) staying hot to raise his season line to 321/389/691 in approaching 100 PAs.
  15. Will be interesting to see which way they go. If regular PAs aren’t going to be available & they don’t think Jace will be out too long, will probably leave Turang in AAA for now.
  16. Kevin Briceno bounces back somewhat in his 2nd ACL start holding opposing Brewers Blue batters to 1 R | 1 H | 4 BB | 4 K over 3.2 IP.
  17. Turang (1-4, HR, BB), Hiura (1-5, 2B, only 1K), Almonte (2-5, 2B), Singleton (2-4, 2B, BB), Reyes (3-5, 2B) and Whitley (1-3, 2B, BB) weren’t quite enough as Nashville pitchers gave up a ten spot.
  18. Chourio with a ho hum for him one for three with a 2B & BB game. Link report favorite Ryan Middendorf notches his first Carolina save with 2 H | 1 K in his scoreless ninth.
  19. Wiemer no hits in three trips to the plate through eight innings, but 2 RBI & only 1 K, so that’s progress!!
  20. Was just thinking who the highest ranked prospects I’d be willing to trade for Benny are & Valerio/Hiura is what I came up with too.
  21. Congrats to Ashby & the Brewers’ scouting/coaching/development staff. Bummer about Jace, that he’s been our best position player by BRef WAR so far pretty much says it all about the offense. Cot’s has Burnes listed as a free agent after 2024 though?
  22. Yeah, Corey Ray was at 60 K / 24 BB his draft year. The red flags were always there with his approach. Brown posted 28 K / 39 BB his draft year. Two completely different hitters.
  23. Yeah, he was working on it a little more in spring, but has only thrown it sporadically throughout the season. FanGraphs has him at 4.5% cutters so far.
  24. Yeah, the FanGraphs scouting report (they had him #51 on their board) made it sound like he's a pretty good bet to stick behind the plate defensively and he has a solid approach with a chance for a plus hit tool.
  25. Never know, last time someone named Satchel pitched in MLB he was 58 years young.
