  1. Cubs (6-7) sure, but we are 7-2 vs CIN and 9-4 vs PIT this year. 22-13 combined for the three is a .629 W% (102 win pace over 162). Problem is we’re 28-30 vs everyone else.
  2. Nashville prevailed in a 10-8 slugfest with Tyler White, Wes Wilson & Brian Navaretto all having multi hit games including a bomb each, while Tyrone Taylor collected three singles in four trips to the plate. Sounds also went bullpen game with Zack Brown (2 K), Peter Strzelecki (2 BB | 1 K), Alec Bettinger and Trevor Kelly tossing scoreless frames.
  3. In addition to the aforementioned Sal Frelick heroics, Andruw Monasterio (2-4, HR, BB), Thomas Dillard (1-5, 2B) and Cam Devanney (2-5, 2 HR) chipped in on offense. Meanwhile, in a pretty true bullpen game, seven Shuckers hurlers held the Smokies to 1 run & 3 hits with Zach Vennaro (1.1 IP | 3 K) getting the W while Robbie Hitt (1 IP | 2 K) finished things off.
  4. Jose Acosta (2-4, 3B, BB), Zavier Warren (1-3, 2B, BB), Joe Gray Jr. (2-4, BB) and Tristan Peters (2-5, HR) rattled some timber, as it were. James Meeker (4 IP | 1 ER | 2 H | 1 BB | 3 K) and Christian Tripp (2 IP | 0 ER | 0 H | 1 BB | 1 K) started the game strong on the mound, but the pen couldn’t hold on as Wisconsin lost 5-4.
  5. Jeferson Quero three for five with two doubles, Jesus Chirinos with a dinger & a single, and Hedbert Perez with a bomb & a base on balls about the only highlights as Carolina falls 10-4.
  6. Jones upside is tantalizing, but seems like the Brewers have kind of shied away from the boom/bust guys in the first round since Ray. Hiura was always at least supposed to hit even if he never figured out defense and then Turang, Small, Mitchell and Frelick have been more high floor with a chance to pop if something clicks kind of guys.
  7. Does this mean if don’t trade the farm for Soto that Stearns doesn’t have one foot out the door?
  8. Reading through the FanGraphs scouting reports of guys in our range & with full admission that I know absolutely nothing, some of my personal favorites &/or guys that sound like they kind of have Brewer-y profiles to me are #23 Tyler Locklear (1B), #29 Connor Hjerpe (P), #31 Parker Messick (P), #36 John Kasevich (3B), #41 Malcolm Moore (C/1B), #45 Dylan Beavers (RF), #48 Cade Doughty (3B), #66 Tanner Schobel (SS), #84 Ivan Melendez (1B), #87 Jake Madden (P), #95 Hayden Dunhurst (C), #98 Carter Young (SS), #106 Tyler Cleveland (P), #107 Spencer Giesting (P), #111 Jackson Cox (P), #117 Alan Roden (1B), #124 Andrew Taylor (P) and #125 Jurrangelo Cijntje (P).
  9. Just noticed that Yelich has exactly 17.5 career WAR each with the Marlins & Brewers. Took 500 fewer PAs to get there with the Brewers, but a little more evenly distributed with the Marlins (1.6, 3.8, 3.6, 4.9, 3.7 seasonal WARs) vs 7.3, 7.0, 0.5, 1.2, 1.7 (so far) with the Crew. Here’s a somewhat depressing contemplation, Braun has 47 career WAR & was at 35.9 through age 30. Will Yelich finish his career with a higher WAR than Braun? Needs to essentially average 2 WAR a year from here on out.
  10. Frelick three for three for BIloxi today & will be leading things off top of the seventh. Biloxi currently up 5-3.
  11. Awesome that they are giving Low a shot to try the two way thing out. Hopefully he can keep the early success going. As frustrating as Mitchell's fits & starts are, I'm holding out hope for the long run that he maybe takes a similar path to DBacks CF prospect Corbin Carroll, who after being drafted 16th overall in 2019 only played in 49 games from 2019 to 2021 on account of injury/pandemic, but has gone on to post a 315/434/635 line this year to justify his draft slot/prospect hype.
  12. FanGraphs posted their latest 2022 Draft Board with scouting reports for over 100 players… https://www.fangraphs.com/prospects/the-board/2022-mlb-draft/summary?sort=-1,1&type=0&pg=0&pageitems=10000000000000
  13. Not too surprising given Greinke’s personality. When he started out the year getting shelled, I checked BRef & saw he was at exactly 69.0 career WAR. Half expected him to retire then saying he thought it was a nice time to do so.
  14. K rate stabilizes much faster than HR/FB does. Hiura’s K rate this season (43.8%) is much closer to his career K rate (35.5%) than his HR/FB rate is, 36.4% this year vs 23.0% career.
  15. Among 172 qualified relievers, Milner’s 51 ERA- ranks 26th while his 70 FIP- ranks 44th. His fastball velocity ranks 166th.
  16. After posting -8 DRS during his first 628 innings at SS in 2018, Adames has been at +14 DRS over 3466 innings since 2019. Even if Turang is a better fielder, I don't think they'll move Adames off SS. Small samples all around but Urias has graded out better at 3B (+7 DRS | 872 innings) than 2B (+2 DRS | 672 innings), & his bat profiles better at third so I would imagine he would stay there. Which leaves option 1 as the most likely in my opinion. Even if his wRC+ is only in the 85 or so range, with plus defense & plus base running (17/1 SB/CS so far this year) that should shake out around 2 WAR or so which wouldn't be terrible for a 23 year old rookie.
  17. Davis has a 72 wRC+ so far but has done enough on the bases & in the field to shake out at 0.2 WAR over 55 PAs. Small sample size theatre to be sure, but hard for me to be too upset about getting a positive contribution from the 3rd CF/7th OF on the depth chart entering the season. Regular CFs with similar speed/defense/no hit profiles this year include… Myles Straw (345 PAs | 67 wRC+ | 1.2 WAR) T Grisham (334 PAs | 81 wRC+ | 0.6 WAR) A Duvall (301 PAs | 79 wRC+ | 0.6 WAR) K Hernandez (238 PAs | 69 wRC+ | 0.1 WAR) Looking at recent full seasons Michael Taylor put up 2.0 WAR with a 77 wRC+ last year, Kiermaier came in at 2.5 WAR with a 79 wRC+ in 2019, Billy Hamilton put up 1.8 WAR with a 68 wRC+ in 2018.
  18. McCutchen’s was never really a good defensive CF. Started his career with -7 DRS and -11.4 UZR from 2009-13 but then cratered to -56 DRS and -30.9 UZR from 2014-17. No nuance required, he was just a brutal defensive CF. Different guys age differently & it looks like Cutch lost his wheels after 2013 (+31.4 on the bases 2009-13, -10.9 since) which coincided with his similarly precipitous fielding decline.
  19. With Israel Puello, Stiven Cruz and Leoni De La Cruz all having strong outings the last couple days & the season being a few months in now thought I’d check back on my DSL/ACL follow list from last winter… Garabitos | A | 21 IP | 27 K | 11 BB Puello | A/A+ | 68 IP | 77 K | 22 BB Jimenez | A | 69 IP | 63 K | 27 BB Briceno | DSL | 28 IP | 31 K | 5 BB Cornielle | A | 68 IP IP | 83 K | 43 BB S Cruz | A | 54 IP | 62 K | 11 BB De La Cruz | ACL | 13 IP | 21 K | 5 BB Perdomo and Mejia only have like a dozen innings each so far & Camacho hasn’t pitched at all, but the other seven have had varying degrees of successful seasons to this point in the summer. Pretty encouraging stuff. A few of the guys have already seen pretty big IP jumps. Wonder if they’ll maybe start dialing some of them back after the draft.
  20. Leoni jumped out to me last year with both the 39 to 10 K/BB ratio over 29 IP and that age, 23, old man winter for the DSL. Wonder what the story is on him signing so late for a DR prospect. Middendorf looks interesting too so far. Definitely like that the Brewers seem to be one of the more active teams in signing arms out of the Indy Leagues.
  21. Where does it say the Brewers are giving Burnes extra rest so he can pitch the All Star Game? McCalvey notes the extra rest lines him up to pitch in the ASG, not that the Brewers are doing it for that specific purpose. I’m always fine with erring on the side of caution/extra rest for any pitcher, much less one as integral to the team’s uninspiring mediocrity as Burnes is.
  22. The Brewers 123 wRC+ with RISP is tops in all of MLB. The Brewers 121 wRC+ in high leverage situations is 5th in baseball.
  23. Seems like every time I can’t watch the game & check in after a few innings the Brewers are either winning 1-0 or losing 4-0.
  24. Was just looking at BRef & noticed Trout is at an even 80.0 career WAR. Here’s how he stacks up with some other OFs through their first 6,000-ish career PAs… Player | PAs | OPS+ | WAR Trout | 5976 | 176 | 80.0 Mick | 6054 | 172 | 74.3 Mays | 5961 | 159 | 76.8 Cobb | 5975| 183 | 78.4 Bonds | 6038 | 159 | 74.0 The 2nd best position player of the Trout-era has been Mookie Betts with 52.9 WAR through 4727 PAs, which is about a 67 WAR pace projected out to 6,000 PAs.
