  1. Now that Jungmann is officially in the fold I was just curious about what people's opinions were in regards to his mechanics meeting our spotty track record developing pitchers as an organization? Are there some minor adjustments that can be made or should we just let him fly with what has worked for him thus far and see what the results are?
  2. Something to keep in mind when the Braun/Lawrie comps are thrown around is that when Ryan was Brett's age he was splitting the year between Helena and West Virginia. Lawrie may not have put up eye popping power numbers in the minors but he was also one of the youngest players in the league at each of his stops and still put up more than respective power numbers all along the way.
  3. Check out the Happy Dog in Cleveland. Five bucks for a huge Kosher dog and you get to pick from like 100 different toppings. Think I got their homemade killer steak sauce, crunchy peanut butter, cheese whiz and bacon. They also have a great beer selection with a bunch of Ohio micros.
  4. Yeah, would have to guess Ramirez isn't on the list of people they are going to try to move if they do blow it up. He is right there with Tulo, Hanley and Reyes in the top tier of shortstops and should easily provide plenty of surplus value through 2016 assuming good health.
  5. As amazing as it would be, Prince would never ask Branyan because then he would no he had no chance to win.
  6. Thanks for the link, Toolive. Let's hope Greinke emerged from the table with all his ribs entact. As for Axford, he has been outstanding and is deserving of an All Star nod for sure. The only thing that makes me a little nervous still is that he is a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball.
  7. He's had the cocky/intense label applied to him pretty much since he's been in the organization. I seem to recall him missing some games in A ball where he wasn't hurt and the team didn't give a reason why and everyone pretty much assumed it was attitude related.
  8. Beat me to it heresrobin, let's seriously hope not!
  9. Any interest in Okajima? Probably wouldn't cost much to acquire and it'd give Saito somebody to talk to.
  10. Using run values of 0.90 for a single and 1.95 for a HR from the Book entry on wOBA produces a .450 mark for 300 singles and .390 for 120 home runs over 600 plate appearances. So, over the course of baseball history it would appear that the 180 extra times the theoretical .500 hitter doesn't make an out are more valuable over the course of 600 plate appearances than the extra 180 total bases the 120 HR would accumulate. Also, strikeouts & batting average are certainly not meaningless it is just that the casual fan places far more value on them than history has proven them to be worth.
  11. Branyan, Counsell, Kotsay, Backup C and one of Gomez/Plush is a bench I could get behind.
  12. wOBA includes SB/CS so if you're talking about the most valuable player offensively it definitely makes sense but if you're talking about who is a better pure hitter (therefore removing baserunning from the equation) I guess some combination of the three old fashioned rate stats should work fine.
  13. Braun is a better hitter and has been healthier, Tulos plays good D and at a premium position. I agree that Tulo, if he can stay healthy, is a better overall player than Braun but the gap isn't nearly as wide as many in the Fangraphs community would think.
  14. Braun is one of the best hitters in the game without a doubt and I admire his commitment to Milwaukee but what is the rush from the team's point of view?
  15. A power FIFTY? I could've sworn i read somewhere that the Brewers didn't have any prospects at all.
  16. Definitely not Danzig, in fact I think Prince is probably one of the only first basemen in the league who can't reach that throw. I love Prince for many reasons but I really hope he is gone after this year so that every throw to first doesn't have the slimmest of margins for error due to his stature.
  17. I was always pretty skeptical of Hamilton's "success/comeback story" from the moment Cincy traded him. Then came the pictures from the "one isolated incident" that Josh happened to go out and get hammered and do a bunch of body shots with half naked coeds. How unlucky that someone was there with a camera the "one and only" time he has ever slipped up in his whole time sober. And now this. That's a real holy thing you did there Josh, throwing your coach under the bus. I'm sure the religion you "found" after all your troubles would certainly approve of such behavior. Dude is a FRAUD.
  18. In the case of someone like Purke (or any top tier HS kid) who doesn't have to sign if drafted I have no problem with them using that leverage to get as much money as possible. If the worst teams want the best talent they need to pay for it. I realize there is the old argument that "these kids haven't proven anything in pro ball so they're not worth it" but I'd rather give someone like Purke 6 million and then have long term control of him than give that same amount of money to a middle reliever or DH on a one year deal.
  19. If Rosenthal has us fourth that's even more reason for excitement in my book.
  20. http://www.fangraphs.com/...must-throw-more-strikes/ Pretty interesting article that points out that Yo has one of the lowest overall swing percentages in the league. I would guess there is some deceptive element to his delivery that maybe accounts for it?
  21. I for one think Gomez should be trying to bunt for hits more often. He had 30 in 2008 with the Twins. In the two years since, in about 50 more trips to the plate, he has 17. I realize for most players who can actually hit bunting is often a negative outcome and bad strategy but with Carlos it's one of the few ways he can add offensive value from the batter's box. Also, while it certainly helps to have a good approach from the start patience/plate discipline is in many cases the last tool to develop for most players along with power.
  22. Looks (sounds?) like McCalvy has taken over for Witrado as the 1250 baseball insider so that should hopefully help to reign in a little of the craziness over there that Witrado just fed into.
  23. Lawrie may well be a tool but by all accounts so was Ty Cobb. Or Barry Bonds. Or Gary Sheffield. Being a jerk does not preclude being a great athlete, in fact it probably helps in many cases.
  24. We already have a utility middle infielder though with Counsell. Add in Kotsay, Dickerson and Backup C and you have one bench spot left and Cruz just seems like a redundancy with that group. I'd like a RH corner guy with power to round out the bench but I'm not sure we have that guy in camp. Whither Brendan Katin?
  25. Curious if they'll skip a couple of Narveson's starts in April to get Greinke a couple extra starts or if they'll just run a straight five man to keep everyone in their routine.
