  1. Kotsay didn't give up A run in the field, he gave up 3 as Yadi's double play would've ended the inning so Pujols doesn't score.
  2. This move doesn't concern me much in the short term, but with the Cubs sure to adopt more "new-school" methods of player evaluation and acquisition Theo could get them turned around in a few years.
  3. Why all the doom and gloom? It's the internet. People who are able to keep an optimistic mindset go out and sip on lemonade in the sunshine while all the haters type type away in their mother's dimly lit basement, right?
  4. Definitely. Additional revenue + a (hypothetical) World Series ring = a higher likelihood that Mark will make a more competitive offer for Prince. Since it's becoming more and more apparent with the HOU situation that MLB wants two 15 team leagues I'd volunteer to move back if I were Mark A as then you can offer Prince a longer deal and move him into DH at some point.
  5. I believe it was Mickey Rivers who once said something along the lines of "I don’t get upset over things I can control, because if I can control them there’s no sense in getting upset. And I don’t get upset over things I can’t control, because if I can’t control them there’s no sense in getting upset."
  6. The guy that caught and threw back Shoppach's home run to center in game on of the ALDS was awesome.
  7. "That the Braves are considering dealing him should be a red flag." I wish our GM would've pounced on the red flag that went up when they traded donuts for dollars on Yunel Escobar.
  8. Your best bets if you don't want to pay to park are probably parking off of National or Blue Mound and walking in, finding a bar that has a shuttle or riding your bike in (my personal favorite). I'm guessing there might be a bus that runs down Canal and drops you off pretty close too, but I'm not sure on that one.
  9. Anyone that quotes UZR or WAR as absolute is not a "stat geek" as a true geek would understand the limitations of those metrics and not treat them as infallible. It seems to me the real problem is not the stats themselves but rather the lazy people who misuse them without understanding what they really mean.
  10. If two players have essentially the same rate stats but one has played more games and at a more difficult position to boot that is the guy I'm taking.
  11. If Matt Kemp wins the triple crown and does not lead all of baseball in wRC+ he will be only the second triple crown winner in the post dead ball era to do so since Chuck Klein who won the NL triple crown in 1933 but was only second in all of baseball in wRC+, behind AL triple crown winner Jimmie Foxx. History has proven that every single triple crown winner to this point has been much better than "top 10 or so" at least in terms of hitting. I didn't consider fielding in this exercise because if no one can agree on how to assign it proper value today how are we supposed to do so for guys that played 100 years ago?
  12. Schlitz is exactly right. If Kemp wins the batting title as the final jewel in the first NL triple crown since Ducky Medwick 70 some years ago and thd first in MLB since Yaz 40 plus ago he will get it. If Kemp doesn't win the crown Braun will win on account of having better teammates.
  13. I would argue that anyone who constantly misuses the stats they are quoting due to not properly understanding them is in fact not a geek by the dictionary definition of the word.
  14. "The stat geeks won't let you argue." That is a terrible blanket statement. Most "stat-geeks" are simply looking for ways to better understand the game and would like as many tools at their disposal to do so as is possible. If someone wants to just trust their eyes or just trust the spreadsheet while more or less ruling out the other that is obviously their prerogative but it will lead to a very limited view of the game.
  15. Wow. It's refreshing to see someone take less money to stay somewhere that they are already happy but I'm guessing Berkman left at least 25 million on the table by taking this deal.
  16. Curious to see the specifics on the deal. After the season he put up he could have easily gotten multiple years at pretty big money I would think. Hopefully the classies had to pay a Gagne-esque premium to bring him back on just a one year deal.
  17. I don't have any stats to back this up but I would imagine most of the females at MP would not have any idea how to even begin scoring a baseball game and are more there for the atmosphere, or what have you. If I asked a random woman walking down the concourse what position 4 was, I'd probably get slapped. Not to say that there are no women who keep score or are more than just casual fans, but I still feel like it is probably an overwhelming minority even amongst those females who pay some attention to sports.
  18. A friend of mine was in the Giants organization at the time of the Rowand signing and I asked him what he thought about it and I remember him kind of chuckling and saying something along the lines of "Let's see him put up those numbers in our park."
  19. I really think it's gonna be Toronto. They have the money, Lind/Encarnacion are nothing special at 1b/dh and AA knows you need difference makers in the AL East so if he were to open up the checkbook Fielder (or Pujols) certainly fit the bill.
  20. Mat Gamel has barely played any OF in his professional career and has played primarily 1B this year, if he was better suited for the outfield I think the organization would have penciled him in for more than the dozen or so random games he's seen out there. I don't think it's come up in this thread, but I also think people need to give up on the idea of Corey Hart at 1B. He hasn't spent any real time there in over 5 years. Though it did crack me up on 1250 today when the Big Unit rhetorically asked, "When's the last time Corey played first? College?"
  21. Does it seem weird to anyone else that Greinke is younger than Weaver?
  22. Something to keep in mind with the downward trending of the overall run environment in MLB you don't have to be a "30 hr guy" to have value, even in RF. It's been pointed out with the recent Frenchy extension that he has gone from a below average hitter to an above average one over the last few seasons simply by remaining constant.
  23. In terms of results, he definitely has an extremely impressive body of work against what is widely considered to be the best amateur competition out there. I'm not basing my concerns on the results of a few late season starts, especially when he has pitched superlatively in the CWS in years past. I've also only ever seen him pitch in video on line and am not a pitching coach of any repute, but from what I've seen of his motion it just seems like an injury waiting to happen. Granted, that could be said accurately about pretty much every pitcher out there as at some point or another they all experience arm related problems of one severity or another. It seems the best course of action is probably just to leave him alone and see what the results are, both in terms of performance and health, and then re-evaluate after some time.

  25. Now that Jungmann is officially in the fold I was just curious about what people's opinions were in regards to his mechanics meeting our spotty track record developing pitchers as an organization? Are there some minor adjustments that can be made or should we just let him fly with what has worked for him thus far and see what the results are?
