  1. so you give no creedence to escobar putting up his line during his age 21 season and the hurricane doing so in his age 23 season? i'm perfectly fine with giving escobar a full year in nashville, barring injury to weeks or hardy. there is no advantage for the organization to rush him at this point. now, if escobar gets off to a great start in nashville and the giants call and offer baumgarner/alderson for hardy after renteria goes down with an injury? i could be persuaded.
  2. i've still got my hensley meulens rated rookie card somewhere...
  3. here's something that might get me interested in watching the nba all star festivities again. take the top two vote getters at each position in each conference. they play one on one for the right to start the all star game. then the winner at each position from each conference goes head to head for bragging/all nba rights. with the one on one nature of the game now and all the competition amongst the top stars it seems like this would maybe encourage a little more effort than the skills challenge/david robinson throwing up half court shots...
  4. i'm not sure if you're basing your comparison off career minor league numbers or not, joepepsi, but the relevant information between hall and the hurricane would be to compare what they did at the same age. since the season in question for hall seems to be his age 21 season, which he split between A+ and AA, and ops'ed 805 between the two. at age 21 hernan spent the whole year in A ball and ops'ed 739. the hurricane also has 13 big league plate appearances through his age 24 season. at the end of his age 24 season bill hall already had over 600. that definitely speaks somewhat to the big league team getting better over the last few years, but also to how much better of a prospect bill hall was than the hurricane ever will be.
  5. while i agree this is a good deal for the angels, you really can't compare the value of abreu and cameron. abreu was +22.7 on offense last year but -25.2 on defense. cameron was +10.3 on O and +9.7 on D. throw in the fact that cameron can play anywhere in the outfield and abreu should barely be allowed out there and i can't imagine you think the two have equal value. oh wait, i forgot, cameron only strikes out and hits meaningless homers.
  6. PECOTA projects the brewers at 83-79 for 2009, not sure if this includes looper or not. anyone recall what they projected for last year's crew? i could only find the cubs prediction which was winning the division with 89 wins, so they obviously had the brewers lower. PECOTA can't be too good though, i mean they only had the rays down for 88 wins before last year, so adios credibility.
  7. i have a feeling that if you told teams in the nfl that they could control all rookie players for the first six years in the league with the first three years there being essentially no salary requirements and then the following three years being cost controlled through arbitration they would probably trade in the cap pretty quick. as it stands right now, it looks like the cap might now be around too long in the nfl anyway...
  8. at the same time it seems almost cyclical in that cathcing is so bleak at the mlb level which leads to catching prospects getting rated a little higher than they probably should. it seems like after high school pitchers that catchers probably are the most likely to flame out rather than live up to their potential. looking at law's list though i definitely saw a few head scratchers. so escobar has already had comparable success to triunfel at a higher level but gets rated lower? i know upside plays into it as well but it sounds like triunfel is almost as old as escobar anyway. not to mention he has triunfel listed as 2b/ss so i'd imagine scouts aren't quite as high on his defense as they are with escobar's.
  9. i love aybar and his skillset a lot. the only problem is that the only guy we have who could help out tampa bay with their roster as presently constructed is hall so we'd probably have to eat a bunch of his salary and then throw in a prospect of some sort too. with their outfield all full up now (crawford, upton, joyce, gabe, gabe, burrell ) i wonder if fernando perez is someone they'd be willing to shop? he'd look better than any of our 4th outfielder options at this point. but again what could we really even offer the rays? salome for aybar/perez? i guess only if the brewers think his glove won't play behind the plate.
  10. now that fangraphs has added their value stat to the team leaderboards i thought it might be interesting to take a look back at sheeter's value for each of the years it is available, which is 2002 onward. value is in millions. 02 | sheets 9.8 | rusch 4.1 03 | sheets 10.4 | rusch 5.9 04 | sheets 24.7 | davis 14.0 05 | sheets 12.7 | davis 11.0 06 | sheets 14.7 | cappy 14.4 07 | sheets 9.4 | coco 12.9, soup 10.9, yoga 10.6 08 | sheets 20.6 | CC 21.1 as you can see from the value numbers even in his injury filled years of 05 and 06 he was still the most valuable pitcher on the team. he finally got knocked down to 4th in 07 and was barely edged by CC last year, whose value also includes his work with CLE. i'd imagine if you take out his time with CLE sheets would edge him as well.
  11. verlander's fastball has lost 1.9 mph since he entered the league. over the same time his curveball has gotten 1.7 mph faster and his changeup has gotten 2.8 mph faster. less difference in velocity between pitches just makes the batter's job that much easier. even so, if he could be had for any combination of players not including jeffress, gamel, or escobar i'd be interested.
  12. the yankees are consistently amongst the highest offseason spenders. that they spent 400 million in one offseason is no surprise to me especially considering the amount of expiring contracts they had, that they missed the playoffs, and they are moving into a new stadium. i think i even saw somewhere that their payroll will probably end up being LOWER next year than it was last year.
  13. i 'd like to trade for a young starter. you'd like to trade for a young starter. i'm sure the brewers would love to trade for a young starter. the question becomes, how many of those deals have gone down this offseason? i remember all of zero. you can't deal if no one else wants to, just like you can't sign a free agent that doesn't want to be in milwaukee. i guess in both scenarios you can force the issue and make something happen, but that type of desperation typically results in overpaying. i'd prefer melvin to stand pat instead of making a move just for the sake of making a move.
  14. america operates and was built upon the premise of a free market society. with baseball being THEE american game i see no reason why it should operate any differently. a salary cap is just as socialist as a strikeout is facist. not to mention, there already is a salary cap. it's just that it's a soft cap and it's called the luxury tax.
  15. not sure if this is the thread to talk about orlando hudson or not anymore, but just thought i'd point out something i found interesting... rickie weeks age 23 | 363/404 age 24 | 374/433 age 25 | 342/398 orlando hudson age 25 | 328/395 age 26 | 341/438 age 27 | 315/412 hudson never put up and ops+ of 100 or more until his age 28 season.
  16. well those UZR numbers must be off because he won a GOLD GLOVE!!! maybe a lower score is good, like in golf. i definitely want no part of michael young. that contract is gonna be a HUGE albatross around the neck of any team that picks him up.
  17. minaya was on the mlb hot stove the other night (which i've enjoyed when i've been able to catch) and said that the Madoff money was a completely separate investment from the mets for the wilpons and whomeverelse. i also feel like i read something recently maybe from heyman about teams being more concerned with benny's shoulder than his elbow from the medical reports that are going around.
  18. in an 8+ year career milton bradley has one, exactly one, season with 100 or more games played in the outfield. now you take a brick wall, a ballpark that two months out of the season has the potential for some very unpleasant weather, loud fans who will let you know if they think you suck and a 30 year old headcase into account and i'd be surprised if milton plays 162 games the next three years combined.
  19. the fact that weeks was drafted #2 overall also should mean zero in evaluating him right now. sure, people's expectations were high at the outset because he was a high pick/the all time leading hitter in ncaa. but enough time has passed that we can look at the 2003 draft and see that rickie (despite people's opinions of him being a "bust" for his draft slot) has actually performed well compared to his peers. 20003 first round pick | ab | ops nick markakis | 1723 | .851 aaron hill | 1720 | .748 WEEKS | 1615 | .758 conor jackson | 1525 | .810 delmon young | 1346 | .739 carlos quentin | 875 | .864 lastings milledge | 873 | .736 the only pitchers that have come out of the first round and had any success so far are two chads, billingsley and cordero. john danks was in there too, but he has yet to show too much at mlb. so i guess if five and a half years ago you were clamoring for markakis or billingsley with that number two overall pick, pat yourself on the back for a job well done. otherwise it seems like our "bust" of a pick has actually handled himself pretty nicely so far in his mlb career.
  20. replacement level essentially means AAAA players. guys like laynce nix who every offseason can be signed to a minor league deal or acquired for no real significant prospects.
  21. http://mlb.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=425858 thats the url for dave's mlb.com page. there is a video link on the page for dave's career highlight.
  22. thats the beauty of the new value stats at fangraphs. giambi works perfectly since they have the win values starting in 2002, his first year in pinstripes. he was worth 73 million dollars over the life of his 115 million contract. in only three of the seven seasons did he earn his actual salary.
  23. i'm anxious for them to add the value stat to their leaderboard section to make it searchable, but i can't imagine anyone coming in higher than the 192.2 million of value pujols has provided since 2002. especially considering his actual salary has been 60.3 million during that timeframe. there's also a nice entry up at the top right now about the monumental nature of neifi perez's 2002 campaign.
  24. i could be wrong, but i believe the yankees will still have a pretty high luxury tax bill, but their revenue sharing will be less because they are paying off debt from a new stadium which can be written off against their revenue sharing total at year's end. the luxury tax essentially acts as a salary cap right now anyway. in the 6 years it has existed the yankees have paid 90% of the total amount received.
  25. just got to throw emmet otter's jugband christmas in the ring, that's my personal favorite xmas movie.
