Assuming Nelson comes back (big if), I think we are more than fine with a rotation of Nelson, Anderson, Chacin, Guerra, and Davies/Suter/Peralta. It will take a king's ransom to obtain either of these pitchers, please stay far away DS.
How many of these big time deadline moves actually put teams over the top? Verlander last year was such a rare deadline move that paid off for the Astros. We didn't even make it to the world series the years we acquired Sabathia or Greinke. I don't think our starting rotation needs as much help as people make it out to be. In my view, the team needs to prioritize the bullpen and getting another bat.
I'm a hard pass on both. I don't want to mortgage the farm for what it will take to get either. I would try and improve the bullpen, get a bat, and call it a deadline. I am also hoping Nelson comes back healthy by August, which would be like adding an ace at the deadline.
Honestly, if we could get Swarzak back for cheap, I'd gladly take him. He was a big reason for our 2nd half surge last year, and we most definitely need bullpen help.
Aguilar has been amongst the most productive 1Bs in baseball since taking over the full time job. Thames is a downgrade in every offensive category except MAYBE HRs. It would take a very big prospect haul for me not to be mad at a trade, and even then i might still be mad. Thames is a free agent after next year and it is very tough to find franchise 1Bs as we have seen over the years as Brewer fans.
I realize the competition at 1B is stiff in the NL, but at what point does Aguilar warrant all-star consideration? I mean, 9 HR and 30 RBIs in 30 games is just incredible. At his present trajectory, he could be amongst the league leaders in both categories by July. Not to mention a .320 BA and .400 OBP to boot.

At what point does the franchise look at Jesus Aguilar as the long term solution at 1B? He's still only 27, has proven he can hit RH and LH pitching, and plays solid defense. He also has many years of team control left and is cheap. Just throwing this out there for discussion.
Over/under on how many more starts Burnes makes in AAA...7? Medieros has so much Madison Bumgarner in him, really hard not to get excited about him as a top of the rotation type of starter.
I agree 100% with giving Hader a chance to start. What if he's the next Chris Sale? How do we know if he is or isn't until given the shot? His whole trajectory in the minors was to be a SP, why change course now? I hate the way Stearns and co. have handled things with him. Meanwhile our starters can't get through five innings and our bullpen is already overworked two weeks into the season.
Kemp has definitely been awful. I mean maybe awful by Kemp's standards, but any worse than Braun? I still feel like this might be a gamble worth taking if we can squeeze a prospect or two out of the Dodgers.
Could anybody see a major rebound for Kemp playing in the confines of Miller Park? Its not like has been awful the past few years, and has never had the luxury of hitting in a hitter's park. If Stearns can do a Kemp/Braun swap and garner another prospect or two, I think I'd be all over this move.
With the market for relievers the way it is, I'm upset we didn't match the Mets offer for Swarzak. He was as good as anyone on the open market and pitched phenomenal for us last year. I'm okay with us not making any trades as of yet.
Maybe we can trade for him again when the Mets are 15 games out of first place by July 1? I'm disappointed we couldn't get Swarzak back, he made our bullpen and team that much better in the 2nd half of last season.
I would take Panik in a trade. The crew has broken the strikeout record two years in a row, Panik would be a big step in the right direction towards lowering team strikeout numbers. DS has to be cognizant of this going into the offseason. Panik's power numbers have nowhere to go but up getting out of AT&T Park.
I'd bring Swarzak back. Throws an easy 95 mph fastball, great slider, and good control. Really everything you want in a setup man. He really stabilized the back end of the bullpen when we traded for him. I felt like the bullpen became a team strength when you had Hader, Swarzak, and Knebel finish games.
And the Cubs had an absolutely dominant bullpen last year too. You need to have it in the postseason to win a championship, there will be another team that will have it if you don't.
Not sure what you do with Braun at this point. I can't see him playing more than 100 games in any given season moving forward. He was pretty average in pretty much every offensive category this year, and really struggled down the stretch when he was needed most. Do we want him blocking one of our younger players? Do we want him as a $20 million per year 4th outfielder? I'm sure this will be one of the biggest discussions with the Brewers' brass this fall. My vote is to test the market and see if you can find a taker and go from there.
For me, the offense is the main part of the team that needs to be improved upon this offseason. The team set the all time record for strikeouts two years in a row, that can't happen again. The team was also amongst the worst in baseball with RISP, we saw time and time again how that hurt the team in crucial moments. We need more contact hitters and rely less upon the home run ball going forward.
Have to win tonight to guarantee another day. Would be fun to take this all the way into Sunday and see what happens. Hopefully the Cards sit a lot of their players to make the task a little easier for us.
