  1. I feel looking at 2021 with a typical season bullpen construction would be a problem waiting to explode in the teams collective face. With the limited number of inning thrown last season, expecting starters to carry traditional workloads for the entire '21 season is asking for more than normal are related injuries. I suspect only a handful of pitchers across baseball in 2021 will get to 180 or more innings Some teams are looking at 6 man rotations to address the issue. Others will use piggy-backs (a typical minor league pitching strategy) or have additional multiple inning relievers in the bullpen so those guys could come in during the 4th or 5th inning a game to get 7-8-9 outs. A lot will come down to pitch counts. If a starter needs 75 pitches to get thru 3 innings, he might not be out for the 4th inning. If the starter can get thru 5 innings at under 90 pitches, he might get to see the 6th inning. Most clubs will want option flexibility in their bullpen so arms can be moved up & down with AAA in waves if needed.. Some NRI guys might even start in the minors so the decision of a 40 man roster spot can be deferred until the call up is necessary..
  2. Yandy Diaz would be a VERY GOOD target as well as a great guy to have on your side during a brawl...
  3. Why do you think Kipnis can backup at 3B?? He has never played there & his arm isn't exactly the strongest...
  4. Just FYI - Effectively Wild podcast (Fangraphs) episode 1656 dropped today. They are doing their season preview series (2 clubs per podcast) & this one covers the Rays & the Brewers.. (I am unable to get the link from the pod from my phone onto this message so I will let someone more technically adept do that part)..
  5. While Edwin Rios (LAD) was mentioned, Sheldon Neuse was not. Neuse was the up & comer for Oakland (blocked by Matt Chapman) & he was dealt to LAD on 2/12 as part of the 4 player trade. While Neuse might not be the interesting target, his presence now with LAD might make it easier to be acquired or make it easier to get Rios..
  6. On top of the points mentioned by wibangers23, the A's just dealt their in-house 3B replacement to the LA Dodgers on Friday 2/12. I think its highly doubtful the A's would entertain a deal of Chapman unless it was a HUGE overpay...
  7. Kiley McDaniel (ESPN) released his ranking of the farm systems late on Friday 2/12/21. MKE at #29
  8. While I can see the ChiCubs shopping Bryant to the Mets (or any team willing to take on a majority of the contract), the NYMets farm system isn't exactly the best. With 3 complete farm system ranking lists published (KLaw/ Baseball America/ Prospests1500), the Mets have been ranked 19-23-23 respectively. The Cubs in need of help are ranked 26-17-21 across the same lists. It will be interesting to see if a match can be made...
  9. That's a good signing for Cleveland. Gamel likely will end up starting for them. Possible but I think unlikely.. Depends on health of others & Gamel's ability to be solid in CF.. Funny side note: Gamel was once dealt for Domingo Santana. Domingo got a deal with CLE last year & did not make it thru the season before getting sent to the alternate site & then released over the off season.
  10. ***** Old friend alert ***** Ben Gamel to CLE on a minor league deal with NRI.. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/02/indians-sign-ben-gamel.html
  11. Looks like Baseball America also posted its farm system rankings on Weds 2/10. Once again, MKE at #28...
  12. More free source farm system rankings.. Prospects 1500 https://www.prospects1500.com/general/2021-mlb-farm-system-rankings/ MKE checks in at #28 & here is what was written: 28. Milwaukee Brewers The Brewers farm system is short on players that are big league ready right now, but full of talented players down in the lower levels of the minors. This system is only about a year away from contributing some solid big league players. -David Gasper (@dgasper24) Edit: Article link updated
  13. with a collective bargaining agreement set to expire after this year, anything is possible. and as we saw last year, it was negotiated to start with a 30-man, then a 28-man, and then whittle down to a 26-man. mlb and the players union renegotiated in-season to stick with 28 players, including the postseason, and increased the taxi squad limit from three to five. it's a pandemic. nothing can be permanent. The 26 player roster with limit of 13 pitchers was agreed to before the start of spring training 2020. Those were not pandemic related changes.
  14. For those interested, Keith Law has released his farm system rankings today. His rankings for individual teams will be coming out over the next week or so (AL this week, NL next week). This year he ranks MKE 28th (up from 30th last year). As for other teams in the NL Central: St. Louis - 11 (after accounting for Arenado trade, down from 9th last year) Pitts - 16 (down from 14th last year) Cin - 17 (up from 23rd last year) ChiCubs - 26 (up from 28th last year) Tampa repeated has his top system for 2021. The rest of his top 5 are: Cleveland - 2nd Toronto - 3rd Miami - 4th Arizona - 5th
  15. I recall seeing an earlier agreement (within the past 2 weeks when the 26 man regular season roster was announced) that a 27th man would be allowed for doubleheaders... I would doubt the 27th man is during Sept as the regular roster is expanded to 28 already.. I would doubt there is a 60 man player pool UNLESS there is not a minor league season. The extras in the pool last season served as backups since there was no minors in 2020. At the moment the AAA level is scheduled to begin play/ spring training with the MLB groups. The lower levels would start AFTER the 1st spring training camp concludes (& would run thru Sept to make up the time/ games). Having those players "playing" would remove the need for the pool group used last season. Let's look at the pool groups logistically - Where did those players practice/ get housed in 2020?? At a nearby minor league site in almost every case. IF the minors are being played in 2021, where would the pool groups be at so they: A) can practice without interfering or possibly come in constant contact with players outside the pool?? & B) can be away from the MLB groups to limit cross contamination/ exposure?? In short I suspect the pool idea only happens in no minor league play again.
  16. Can anyone come up with a good reason why MLB doesn't require all clubs to have a working humidor for baseball storage at all major league parks & sites for specialty games??
  17. Only 2 players on the PTBNL list with the CC Sabathia deal.. Brantley & (IIRC) Green. Selection came down to Brewers making playoffs or not in 2008. Playoffs - CLE choice (& Brantley). No Playoffs - MKE choice & the other player.. During the non-baseball portion of last spring, Buster Olney had a couple of interviews with his BBTN podcast. Those interviews shed some light on the CLE deals of CC Sabathia & Casey Blake (netting of Carlos Santana) during summer of '08 season. Sabathia was nearly dealt to the Dodgers but LAD balked at adding salary.. Chris Antonetti - 5/11/20 Ned Colletti - 4/24/20 Doug Melvin - 4/23/20 All 3 shows are interesting listens
  18. The sad thing is I recall cheering for both Dion James & Brad Komminsk in a CLE uniform...
  19. For those without Athletic subscription.. (a small relevant part of the article). Why Cleveland is keeping Ramírez Teams are interested in trading for Indians third baseman José Ramírez, but Cleveland is not interested in moving him, sources say. The Indians, even after trading Lindor, still want to compete in 2021, as evidenced by their recent signing of free-agent outfielder Eddie Rosario to a one-year, $8 million contract. Ramírez, meanwhile, remains one of baseball’s biggest bargains. Executives crave surplus value, the amount by which a player’s production exceeds the amount he is paid. One way to estimate that value is by using FanGraphs’ Dollars metric, which is Wins Above Replacement converted to a dollar scale based on what a player would make in free agency.
  20. As a Cleveland fan what are your thoughts on that proposal, MadThinker (regardless of the likelihood, do you think it’s a fair deal)? It seems like Riley and Waters would indeed be the building blocks to any deal with the Braves. Sorry, I thought this was sent out earlier.... I dont see it as a fair deal as its a 'quantity for quality' swap & CLE is starting to deal with a numbers game. Being a CLE fan I am aware that there is a rather significant roster crunch coming for CLE over the next 2 years. The farm system is now easily inside the top 10 in baseball (if not top 5) & the fruits of the system (beyond the pitchers) are about to be seen by everyone Earlier in this thread I responded about some ideas that Turang might be a valuable trade piece to head to CLE in a trade for JRam. Again I say Turang is a very good prospect in his own right and to the right team he could be a very good asset coming back in a trade. In the case of CLE Turang would enter a mix with 5 other SS prospects that are either currently (or had been) top 100 prospects in baseball. I understand the idea of depth & redundancy but some point the question becomes why yet another into the area with depth when there are other needs still having to be addressed. IMHO CLE is likely to start combining prospect assets and start making some 3 for 1 and 4 for 2 trades (CLE giving up the prospects & greater numbers) for pieces it deems it needs to continue competing for either a WC berth or Divisional crown..
  21. If Austin Riley is the uber prospect that Braves fans make him out to be, why wouldn't they just give him the job? Personally I'd be leery of any deal involving the Braves, as their prospects always seem to be over hyped. We are in full agreement regarding Braves dealing their 'prospects'...
  22. As an fyi... Braves fans are on twitter today about possible Jose Ramirez deal. It got started by Hector Gomez (who was one of first to break Ozuna signing) replying to a twitter proposed line up for the Braves w Ramirez. HGomez said he hopes Braves can get it done and the deal on table is supposedly for De La Cruz, Waters, Riley and Langeliers .... He said possible (noting that CLE will listen) but pulling trigger is something else. --------------------------- Personally I don't believe that CLE is motivated to trade JRam (before the start of the 2021 season).
  23. A couple extra points to consider: 1) The Braves have a handful of OF prospects on the verge so if Ozuna has issues with health or defense, they can to an internal option. 2) The Braves & many other teams (cough Brewers cough) are counting on the DH coming to the NL with the new CBA or sooner. If Ozuna is unable to perform in the field, that DH slot can be very helpful as the contract progresses.
  24. LA Angels were never an option for Bauer as long as Mickey Callaway was there. Now that Mickey is in hot water, I would not be surprised if Bauer waits a little longer on a final decision. Assuming Mickey is canned, Angels might be able to get Bauer to strengthen the rotation..
  25. I don't believe Mitchell & Turang would be seen the same way in CLE. Mitchell - Yes CLE would be interested. Turang - Not as much value to CLE as they have 5 other options to sort thru for SS in 2021/ 2022/ 2023. Those options being: Amed Rosario/ Andres Gimenez/ Gabriel Arias/ Tyler Freeman/ Brayan Rocchio Note: the 1st 3 of that grouping already on the 40 man & the last 2 due for R5 protection after the 2021 season.
