  1. But they would still have to pay him. Here's where I'm a little fuzzy. I understand they'll have to pay him for that year, but would they need to pay him for the duration of the contract as well? http://www.usatoday.com/sports/basketball/nba/story/2011-12-13/nba-amnesty-provision-provides-teams-with-flexibility/51892272/1 "The amnesty provision allows a team to waive a player and not have his salary count against the salary cap or luxury tax. The player will still receive his salary for the season." But what about the next four years of Gooden's contract? And to be honest, yes, they'd still have to pay him, but it's not my money, so I don't really care if it's not counting against the team's salary.
  2. The Bucks should amnesty Gooden, though.
  3. I can't believe Iron Maiden has enough of a following to still be a headliner. Black Keys/Florence was the only headliner I've seen in years. Sidestage 10:00 bands are often as big as headliners (Flaming Lips last year comes to mind).
  4. I believe what Old City was referring to was that even though Braun may be "innocent" in that he did not knowingly put PEDs in his body (he wasn't a "juicer"), the MLB policy regarding this is pretty clear in that players are responsible for anything that goes into their body, regardless of how innocently it got there. They have been pretty consistant with this policy in previous rulings and I don't think the union would have any grounds to sue or file a grievence based on that. I think it's more likely that a greivence or lawsuit could be filed in regards to the leak of information in this case. Yep. That he'd be "guilty" for failing a test, but "innocent" as far as any intent. And yeah, there wouldn't be any grievance if he failed the test, regardless of intent.
  5. No worries; we'll still be able to complain about their awful commercials.
  6. Yeah... Nothing heart-wrenching about that. They just got crushed. MSU is my pick for conference champ.
  7. If some of these recent reports that "Braun is innocent but might still be suspended anyway" come to fruition, it's going to be pretty difficult to keep a positive attitude about it. We probably should be glad his name will be cleared, but it will more likely be anger toward what could be something of an unjust suspension.
  8. Not sure why, but I love "Tony Powerplay."
  9. According to everyone on Twitter, 4 years/$36 million. Seems pretty out of nowhere, but the A's look like they'll be a force within a couple years. Loads of young talent.
  10. Very true, but the fact is that in games they're leading late, they're going to get fouled, so making those at the end of the game will be a big boost. Meanwhile, Marquette keeps rolling. Buzz is building up a great program.
  11. Since it seems other people are doing it, I'll advertise our league here. We're in the second season of a 12-team keeper auction league. We're moving to CBS commissioner league this year. We have one spot left. -8 Keepers--that's based off the player salary (so better players will cost more to keep). You don't have to keep 8, but that's the max. Keeping fewer would give you more auction money for the draft. -Rotisserie scoring, 5 offensive and 5 pitching categories. -$40 entry fee -You would inherit the last owner's team. You could keep up to 8 players, but you would pay a salary to keep that player based on his ranking and what the owner paid last year (more info on this if you want it). You don't have to keep any players, or you can just keep a few, if you want. -Draft is 4 pm on Sunday, March 18 It's a pretty intensive league, so we're looking for enthusiastic owners who are willing to put some time into it. PM if interested.
  12. I think this was a microcosm of the team as a whole for the reasons you said, plus I'll add the free throw shooting which led to all the points in OT. They're not as great of a free throw shooting team as they were last year, but it's still good. That's still something that can win them close games going forward. It can help cover up those horrible field goal droughts too.
  13. Trade for a shortstop? Upgrade the starting rotation by signing Edwin Jackson or Roy Oswalt? Trade for a starting pitcher? Sign Saito and have boatloads left over? I could keep going...
  14. Don't know about the entire article, but I agree with every point they made on Ramirez. I hated the deal the second it broke. He's already a first baseman, he's getting old, he's injury-prone, and he'll be making $16 million in 2014. Ugh.
  15. I honestly want to know what the hell is taking so long. What explanation could there be? I'm sure we'll never get one, either.
  16. I'd say Hawkins was a good (not great) pitcher for sure last year. The K rate was low, but 10 walks in 48.1 innings is great. Loe was very good once they had 3/4 better relievers than him, but they won't have that now. I agree on the younger arms. Looking for a sizable contributing from someone like Fiers or Kintzler. Even if the rotation doesn't stay quite as healthy as last year, which is probably unlikely, the Brewers can pretty comfortably go 7 deep now (Estrada, Peralta) rather than 6 deep like last year.
  17. Probably not the place to discuss this in depth, but I expect the bullpen to be worse than last year. I think they'll really miss Saito, and to a lesser extent, Hawkins.
  18. Ha, wow. I worked with him. He texted me about a week ago asking what I'd think if Braun was traded to the Yankees, and I pretty much said it would never happen, especially with the Yankees trading nobody from their 25-man. Funny that this made its way here. I actually think he used me as "the Brewers" when he says, "The Brewers would probably say that they still have Rickie Weeks and Yovanni Gallardo adding to the foundation (maybe they’d even throw Corey Hart’s name into the mix) and that they don’t need to rebuild," because that's what I told him. You can tell parts of it are just not quite knowing the Brewers' situation inside out the way a someone here would (Wolf also being a free agent, making it 60% of the rotation to be a free agent, Peralta close to helping, etc), but then again I don't know any other team half as well as the Brewers. As said, at least he made it clear he saw this as a pipe dream.
  19. Wisconsin back to the chucker offense. 24 threes, no free throw attempts.
  20. Parks and Rec is a must watch for me every week. That's really about it. I abandoned The Office as soon as Steve Carrell left, as it was going downhill even before that happened IMO. I occasionally watch 30 Rock and Archer (hilarious every time I've seen it), but for whatever reason I haven't got into watching these every week. The best shows by far are the paid programming or cable shows. We had a free trial of HBO last year and I watched the first season of Boardwalk Empire, which was awesome, but then our trial ran out. I know a lot of people disagree with me (America's most watched network!), but I find everything on CBS intolerable. I can watch an entire episode of one of those laugh-track comedies without even smiling once. It's either laugh track comedies or crime/law shows on that network. Also, I had never even seen an episode of American Idol until this year, but that has changed because my friend from college is a contestant this year--Reed Grimm. I've seen his band play several times, and he's very talented and an awesome personality. He's advanced the the Hollywood Round, as it's apparently called, so I'll be watching as long as he's alive.
  21. Either way, I believe it's 13 straight conference wins combined for Marquette and Wisconsin. Nice to see both teams playing so well. Now UWM on the other hand...
  22. So at 4:40 this morning, I'm awakened by a very loud but short beeping noise every 30 seconds or so. The carbon monoxide alarm. I'm thinking, 'That's a pretty strange alarm... That can't be right.' Sure enough, the instruction book indicates that it's the "end of life notification." I even called the fire dept non-emergency line, and they confirmed it. I'm working as a sub right now, so I'm due to get up to try to obtain a job. It doesn't even make sense for me to try to get back to sleep. Maybe this should have been in the "Things that are bugging you" thread we had a while ago instead.
  23. Player of the Year: Weeks--just need a full season and he'll get this with Braun like missing 50 games. Pitcher of the Year: Greinke better defense and better luck this season. Rookie of the Year: Gamel. Just have to give him a shot. If Green had a full time spot, I'd say him, but he doesn't. Most improved: I honestly don't see any player improving individually from last year much. Probably one of the newer relievers, like Kintzler or Fiers, because the should actually get a shot. Biggest disappointment: Ramirez. Too much money, too little defense, only decent offense is my guess First extension: None this year First trade/release: Nyjer Morgan, after Aoki plays well and Schafer/Gindl make him expendable. Record: 87-75, Second place in the division, and Bud's new 5th playoff team. Get ready for that lame one-game "playoff."
  24. But he doesn't bunt or ground out enough!
  25. The Brewers would have been better served to spend the A-Ram money on Jackson for two years. Less money, and there's a bigger gap between Narveson and Jackson than between Green and an aging A-Ram.
