  1. I think the Brewers have an opportunity to go with a 12 man pitching staff until Friday 6/14. That would allow them to kick the Hiura decision can down the road. -They have 3 off days which allows for extra rest for the bullpen. They could even get creative with skipping starts etc given the off days freeing up an extra spot for a position player. -They will need a DH next week in Houston -Moose might still get a couple days off after the HBP -They could play Thames in the OF (tiny LF in Houston might not be a terrible option) There are ways to get everyone their plate appearances and anything can happen in a week. If they're definitely activating Shaw from the IL for tomorrow's game I don't think they need to option Hiura for at least another 1.5 weeks (if at all)
  2. What a win. Tomorrow is gravy. It will be interesting to see if they try to make it through tomorrow without a roster move since they have an off day on Monday to help bounce back. Everyone in the pen has pitched at least 2 innings over the past two games except JJ (1+) and Burnes (0). Def available: Burnes Probably available: JJ, Claudio Probably want to avoid: Albers, Guerra Def unavailable: Hader, Freddy, Houser
  3. I like Moustakas and he's been good so far. I don't see the need to extend him though. We've seen the last two off seasons that the league doesn't want to give him a multi year deal at that AAV. No reason to believe that changes this off season.
  4. I get that the Reds want to stack the line up for the platoon splits, but I'll take it every time if they want to sit Winker, Puig, and Barnhart.
  5. Most of his ground balls are to the pull side, but his balls in the air are well distributed including ~half his homers up the middle or opposite field. Source: https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/christian-yelich-592885?stats=career-r-visuals-mlb
  6. Good news: the Brewers are getting the Nats while Turner, Soto, Rendon, Zimmerman, and Adams are all on the IL. Bad news: they get both Scherzer and Strasburg. Normally, I don't think trying to get a starter's pitch count up is all that important since most guys aren't going more than 6 innings these days. Scherzer is a big exception and with the way the Nats pen has performed recently it would be nice if the Brewers can chase him before the 7th.
  7. I like Moustakas just fine. He's not a player who really warrants a multi year deal according to the market though. Moving him to first doesn't make sense because you can get a guy who hits as well for him at first base for about $2mm on the FA market the past few years. It might make some sense to exercise the mutual option next year depending on how things go and how Hiura does this year, but beyond that I wouldn't expect any time of extension
  8. I think they already do this. I've heard/read quotes from the Brewers coaching staff/front office stating their goal is to put Arcia in the spot where he's most impactful on the infield. So it's a combination of where the ball is most likely to be hit and in a position to cover the most ground + still be able to record an out. Often times it's difficult to see exactly where players are positioned on the field while watching on TV unless the ball is hit at a given defender. Just glancing through some of the positioning data from stat cast and on average: Arcia is positioned deeper and closer to first base against left handed hitters with no runners on base. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/visuals/fielder-positioning?teamId=158&firstBase=0&shift=1&batSide=L&season=2019&position=&attempts=25
  9. Like others have said, Quintana is always tough on the Brewers, but maybe with a bit of a revamped line up they'll be able to change that around. Bats need to break out a bit this weekend. I'd be surprised if Shaw and/or Moustakas don't get a day off with LHPs starting the next two days. I would think Perez plays 2nd and Moustakas slides to third in that scenario.
  10. I'm not at all. Gamel has serious wheels. I don't know what he's timed at but the guy just flies. I was pretty meh on him, but after watching him in game I think he has serious sleeper addition potential. Ya he's looked pretty solid out there today. Historically Gamel has graded out poorly in most publicly available defensive metrics. Obviously the Brewers have better information than we have as fans so I trust their decision making. It will be interesting to see if it continues the rest of the year when Gamel starts in place of Cain.
  11. Driving up to Milwaukee tonight and staying with my sister in Wausatosa. We will get the grill going tomorrow around 10am at her house and grill some brats and drink some beers. Eventually we will make our way over to somewhere with a shuttle. We're sitting in TB424. Once the game is over we are going to take a shuttle to probably Trinity and get some food and some drinks and then walk over to the Fiserv Forum for the Bucks game. After that I assume we'll hit up Poto .
  12. He was a solid rubber arm for most of the season. I wouldn't hate it.
  13. I haven't previously thought about this, but the guys on the MKE Tailgate podcast speculated that it really isn't that big a deal to take things really slow with Nelson because if he comes back and is an effective pitcher this season they'll likely want him available for post season play. They may impose a usage limit on him this year and if he isn't up and stretched out for the first month or so of the season that could potentially save some bullets for late in the season and hopefully for the post season. They also used the same logic for Jeffress and taking it slow with him. **this isn't insider info, was just speculation and discussion.
  14. Blake Griffin, Otto Porter Jr, Marc Gasol, Jimmy Butler, Harrison Barnes, Kawhi Leonard were all technically on max contracts. But as far as what you're actually getting at, Blake Griffin is really the only guy I can find in recent seasons.
  15. I agree. Somewhat likely scenario if all are healthy for opening day is Granndal, Pina, and Kratz all making the roster. The Brewers making 3 catchers work for as long as possible and DFA Kratz if not injuries or trade opportunities arise and they can no longer roster all 3. Stearns likes to delay making permanent roster decisions for as long as possible.
  16. Disappointed for sure. I was looking forward to watching him this season and he was likely in line to be on the shuttle squad. As others have mentioned, the Brewers still have good pitching depth and this doesn't affect them that much. Full season of a major league salary and a full season of service time aint bad, but I'm sure he'd rather be playing.
  17. Ya it was more entertaining than insightful. I enjoyed it, but I can understand being disappointed if you expected Brian Kenny and a sabermetric panel to be breaking down the Brewers.
  18. I agree. I'm already convinced the Bucks should try very hard to re-sign him and he's only played ~35 minutes lol You can tell he isn't completely in rhythm with the offense yet. Giannis is definitely looking for him to get 3s up though which is kinda fun to watch. Mitortic looked solid vs Minnesota when they started switching. He was getting switched onto a smaller offensive players and was able to do a good job which was encouraging, especially since he is still getting back into game shape.
  19. Good news is the Bucks probably won't play that poorly very often going forward. Bad news is neither will the Celtics.
  20. I don’t know if I’d agree with them being “all in”. The majority of the key cogs are still under team control beyond 2019. Hopefully that doesn’t mean this elevated payroll is a one time shot at the World Series and if they don’t get there or win it they’ll drop back to a lower payroll.
  21. While the mutual option is likely just a salary deferral, it's pretty reasonable. Net $8mil decision. If Shaw or Hiura sustains a significant injury or if Aguilar flops in 2019 I could see that mutual option being attractive to both sides.
  22. Whoever it ends up being at second base it doesn't really matter to me. I think Shaw and Moustakas are both good defensively at third with neither being the clearly better defender at third. I'm also cool with either one of them playing 2b because it's not like they're replacing a strong defender at the position. Neither Perez nor Spangenberg grades out as a plus defender at 2b so the offensive boost is worthwhile. If they go with a 5 man bench, perhaps Saladino or Dubon might be better options for that last bench spot as a stronger defensive infielder than Spangenberg. However, maybe they'll hang onto Kratz as long as possible before needing to DFA him and pretty much all of the other candidates have minor league options.
