Too Early 2023 Ideas (or beyond)
jay87shot replied to jay87shot's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
What thoughts on the bullpen next year? We have lots of depth but could use a better 8th inning option, Bush and Box are passable guys (assuming we pick up Box's option). Williams, Bush, Box, Cousins, Strezlecki, Gott, Milner, Suter (non-tender?), Topa, Perdomo, Gustave, Sanchez and maybe options like Hobie Harris, Lucas Erceg, or Cam Robinson could all be 40 man options. It would be nice to add in a high leverage lefty. Matt Moore, Aroldis Chapman, Zack Britton, Will Smith, and Taylor Rogers are probably the best free agent options. I would think Moore will get a multi year deal and Chapman will get a more expensive 1 year deal, leaving Britton, Smith, and Rogers as the most logical options. I guess I would lean towards Britton if he recovers from the injury this year. I don't think I would go much over 1/6 with some incentives for any of those guys. -

I like this, maybe Ruiz could be the 4th OF. I posted somewhere maybe he could even play enough 2B to platoon with Turang occasionally (I have no idea of his defense but he was an infielder for 3 seasons or more. I don't mind Rowdy as a DH but I just hate his defense. With Yeli needing more DH time and Huira I am OK with moving Rowdy if we can find a more consistent 1B bat and D. I don't have a ton of confidence in Yeli at 1st. He is athletic enough but I don't think he has ever played infield so that might be a huge learning curve. The team should give it a chance however. The Mariners signed Luis Castillo to a 5 year 108 deal with a 6th option. I feel like this would be a great comp. for Woody. If we shed a few vets, I would totally look to extend Woody and maybe trade Burnes if we could get a huge package. -

Luis Castillo got a top 20, top 80, organizational #6, and a lower ranked but quality reliever prospect. Both Woody and Burnes would have an extra 1/2 year and have been more consistent than Castillo the past 3/4 years. So in theory they should be able to extract a ton, especially for Burnes. I would add in a prospect or player to get the higher end 2nd prospect. I would try and give up someone out of the top 10 or an excess reliever to make it work. -

I brought up the Mets as an option for Woody I would think Burnes to the Mets would work as well. They have 4 starters who are free agents I believe and Nimmo. They do have Alvarez, Baty, and Vientos as quality "ready" bats but really no high end arms we would want back. Alvarez, Baty, and 2 of Matt Allen, Blade Tidwell, Calvin Ziegler, Mike Vasil, Dominic Hamel, Jose Butto, or Joel Diaz would be a nice haul. -

Any chance of Ruiz being a utility player? He did play 2B/SS for 3 or 4 years in the minors. As a 4th OF and maybe like a platoon at 2nd with Turang he would probably play close to full time especially if Yeli is DH a bunch. I like the idea of Burnes or Woody to the O's, however I doubt they give up Rodriguez and Holiday. With how conservative they were at the deadline I doubt they trade any one who is close. That would probably leave us a package of Holiday and like 3 other top 10 prospects which, I doubt we do as it would give us no immediate help. -

You are probably right. However Adolis Garcia had a 3.8 WAR last year and hit .243/.286/.741 granted good D and 31 HR. I think Weimer or Mitchell (not as much power) could be close to that and Frelich or Ruiz maybe similar to what Yeli has done this year which is like a 3. -

Renfroe is really a 2 to 2.5 WAR player. He is solid but I feel like at least 2 of those 4 OF can be 4 WAR players next year. It might take a month or two to weed out one or two if they are ready but say 4, 4, and 0 in the 3 OF spots is better than 3 yeli, 2 Taylor, and 2.5 renfroe this year. -

If anything there would be money available to keep those guys. I would bet odds are very high that one of Frelick or Ruiz will be a top notch leadoff guy and that either Mitchell or Weimer will end up being a solid 2-5 hitter with gold glove caliber defense. To me have the 4 of them makes it a near lock that 2 of them will be high quality starters and at least 1 of the other 2 will be a passable starter. I personally wouldn't trade Taylor, even with a down year he is a quality 4th OF who can be a passible starter if called upon. Renfroe should be on the block and if we can get 1 decent prospect or 2 mid-tier back I would trade him and use some of the money on a 3rd baseman. What about a trade for Anthony Rendon, say Yeli for Rendon, a decent pitching prospect or two (say Chase Silseth), and the Angels eat enough of Rendons contract to even out with Yeli for 4 years ($64 or $48 milly). We would basically be getting out a big contract 2 years early and turn the OF/DH overflow and plethora of future top of the order bats into a potential middle of the order bat at a weak organizational position (big if). The pitching prospect and cash would essentially be insurance against Rendon's injury issues. This seems like a super long shot but I could see the Angels being desperate to get rid of Rendon and adding a solid leadoff in front of Trout and Otani makes sense and if we are looking at saving long term money/flexibility it could work assuming Rendon's health is not a complete loss. -

For Burnes those 3 teams make the most sense, however there would be at least 10 teams that would be interested and have enough talent to potentially overpay. On a separate note, it seems like I read an article a week about how Mike Trout should be traded. Any thoughts on a fair package, or would it just be to impossible long term to have a guy making 40 and having back issues (also outbid the big boys). I think we would have to send out out Yeli, one of the aces, and a couple pieces to beat out any other teams. I would definitely not trade Chourio or Frelick. Yeli, Burnes, Mitchell/Ruiz/Weimer, any pitching prospect for Trout and a reliever or 5th starter type. I feel like that is a lot for the health issues and contract Trout has. However it is Mike Trout, he has a 5.4 WAR in 100 games and its been a down year. -

I would much rather take a chance on someone with upside than waste time watching a bunch of guys who don't hit. This front office has provide it can piece together a pitching staff, so going with a lot of young upside bats makes sense to me. Melendez has a year of decent results and would be a huge C upgrade. I don't think any one is for bringing Wong back with an 8 million dollar option, Turang is an obvious replacement. Trading 2 pitchers isn't a stretch and signing a short term vet in that case makes sense. I will admit Renfroe to the Guardians is a stretch but paying him 10+ and then letting him walk isn't great when we have a couple guys who can provide as much value as him. The bottom line is we have no middle of the order bats on this team and no money. Getting young guys is the only way I see a championship in the future. -

I am all for a soft re-build this year he is my scenerio. Trade Mitchell and a prospect to Royals for MJ Melendez Trade Woody and Urias to Mets for Brett Baty, Mark Vientos, Jose Butto, and a PTBNL Trade Lauer to Rangers for Brock Burke and Cole Winn Trade Renfroe to Cleveland for Jaison Chourio (Jackson younger brother) and PTBNL Sign Mike Clevenger 1/8 team option year 2 sign a couple utilty players minor league deals, sign Rosenthal (may as well) C)Melendez/Caratini 1B)Rowdy/Keston/Vientos 2B)Turang SS)Adames 3B)Baty/Vientos LF)Yeli CF)Frelich/Ruiz RF)Ruiz/Weimer DH)Keston/Yeli/Rowdy/Vientos I am sure you would start 2 of Weimer, Ruiz, Veintos, Baty in the minors. Burnes, Peralta, Ashby, Clevinger, Houser. with Small, Gasser, Butto, Winn in AAA ready Williams, Bush, Burke, Box, Counsins, Gott, Milner, Suter?, Rosenthal, Gustave, Strelecki, Perdomo, Topa, etc. There would be high potential and growing pains in the lineup but enough upside to have a bright future and then we would have enough arms to be competitive. If the team plays well we would have money in a budget and a much stronger farm system to go get a big name. If we stink trade some of Burnes, Rowdy, Adames, Clevinger, Yeli???, and pen arms for more young guys and have competitive talent in 2024. -

Not trying to say we shouldn't re-sign Rowdy, just interesting. It does make a huge point on how the league has changed in 5-ish years. Tellez is probably our most valuable offensive player and he wouldn't have had much value in 2016, also a bit on how dumb it was to let Carter go (even though he only played 1 bad year longer). -

Interesting thought, Rowdy Tellez is having a extremely similar year to Chris Carter from 2016. Rowdy 0.8 WAR .229 ba .319 obp .790 ops 120 ops+ -6 rdrs Carter 0.9 WAR .222 ba .321 obp .821 ops 113 ops+ -5 rdrs Carter did have twice the k's but will be around 10 more HRs. We let Carter walk instead of pay 3+ million. Now I get the HR first mindset is much different than 2016 and with the DH a Rowdy/Carter player is more valueable. Just food for thought. -

Any ideas on finding a solid catcher? I had thought a month ago that Caratini/Severino/Feliciano/Reetz would be solid but I am not so sure now. Also maybe Narvaez could be back for 1/4 or 5. Danny Jansen would be an interesting lower cost home town option to platoon with Victor. MJ Melendez would be interesting, Salvy Perez isn't going anywhere. Weimer or Mitchell for Melendez would be a win/win. Manny Pina could be a option as well with Atlantas duo. James McCann if NYM eats his contract. I am sure we could find a good young catcher in a Burnes or Woody deal. -

The season wasn't doomed when we signed Cutch. The problem was that we were putting almost all the eggs in the basket that Yeli and Cain would return to All-Star form. Basically everything is/was the same, Renfroe is basically the same as Garcia. Therefore the only avenue for improvement was Yeli and Cain regaining past form. Regression from Willy, Omar, Urias, Cain, and to a lesser extend Taylor and Wong (early) have doomed a solid pitching staff. -

The more I watch the crew here down the stretch the more I am hoping for giving more rookies a chance. Trading Yeli would be rough because we would likely need to take back a contract like Rendon, Strasburg, Patrick Corbin, Sale, etc. or add him in with Burnes and get less back. I do agree that I would like Keston to get full time DH role next year, however you could probably do a Rowdy, Yeli, Keston, rookie OF platoon between 1B, LF, and DH and still find enough ab's for everyone (especially if Yeli could learn enough 1B to play say 20-30 games). I like the idea of trading 2 pitchers the idea of trading 2 pitchers this offseason and signing a vet like Wade Miley, Johnny Cueto, Mike Cleavinger or other to be a 5/6 starter on a 1 year deal with an option. If we trade pitching, let Wong walk, and trade Renfroe we should have some nice money to get a nice reliever and some other pieces. Also it would be nice to see if Urias could play some OF and take over Jace's role. If we get a 3B, I would prefer Turang at 2B full time and then Urias moving around giving the young guy more consistency. Also what about trading Adames? I know he seems to be a guy that Counsil and Stearns like a ton however his batting line stinks and I doubt we extend Adames unless he takes less this year. Granted I would want pretty big haul for Willy and I doubt anyone gives up 2 good pieces for .226/.291/.460. -

I would really hesitate to trade Burnes this offseason unless we get mlb proven talent. He is so essential to our pitching staff as an ace, especially with the extreme inconsistency of the offense. In my opinion, Woody would bring in a really great package that might fix some holes. In order to trade Burnes, I would want a package with a bat and starter. For Example Burnes for Ty France, George Kirby, and prospects Burnes for Alejandro Kirk, Cavan Biggio, and good pitching prospects That's just of the top of my head, I am sure there would be better ideas. -

I would like the idea of Abreu and we could probably swing 2/35 or so if we make a trade or 2. However I can't see him leaving the Sox. Scenerio= Trade Woody and Lauer to Rangers for Jung and 4 prospects. Trade Renfroe and Urais to Miami for P Trevor Rogers Trade Rowdy and Taylor for to Seattle for OF Kyle Lewis and a pitching prospect CF Frelich, LF Ruiz/Lewis, DH Yeli, 1B Abreu, 3B Jung, SS Adames, RF Mitchell/Weimer, C Caratini, 2B Turang (4 of 5 young OF on mlb roster at a time) Utl Brosseau, Utl Huira, C Feliciano/Severino. Burnes, Peralta, Rogers, Ashby, Houser, Small Williams, Bush, Box, Milner, Cousins, Suter, Gott Granted it would be a ton of overturn that lineup would have massive potential and the pitching would be enough to make a run at something. Also the team would save money and improve the farm (until prospect status ends on everyone) -

I would think Woodruff should get a package around Luis Castillo. Where Lauer would get a little less than Frankie Montas but thier numbers are close the past couple years and Lauer has less injury concern. Woodruff for 3B Jung, P Owen White, 1B Dustin Harris, and P Cole Raggans We would get 2 quality arms and 2 potential high end bats. or Lauer for Jung and Raggans I would guess the Ranger would be a little leary giving up Jung for a #3 starter so. The Woody deal makes more sense. -

I like the Josh Jung idea, Brett Baty (mets) and Miguel Vargas (Dodgers) would also be ideal middle of the order 3B prospects who will be MLB ready. In the case of the Rangers they would likely be more desperate for high level pitching. -

For sure the knee injury at the end of 2019 into the disaster of what was 2020 hurt. In addition, the league unjuiced the balls and had the cheating scandals Astros, Red Sox, and whatever the Yankees did that the league seemingly won't unseen evidence (unless they have and I missed it). I say that because the Cubs complained a bunch about our bullpen giving some kind of signals. Put a bunch of that together with some natural regression and wa-la.- 55 replies

I was thinking more along the lines of trading Lauer, however if getting a bat means Woody (or Burnes) has to go so be it. Obviously Devers would be perfect but to trade him we would need to trade Yelich and sign Devers. All of that seems next to impossible, I'm sure Devers would want 8 ish year at close to 30 mill. Here is my idea. Trade= Yelich, Urias, and Woody(probably a prospect or 2 from Boston)to Angel's, Boston gets Ohtani, We get Devers and a secondary piece from somewhere. Devers get 8/240 with an opt out in 4 years. Would Eric Lauer (maybe a smaller secondary piece) get someone like Brandon Lowe or Yandy Diaz? -

Middle of the order trade options. Obvious) Reynolds, Mullins, ??? Interesting) Nick Castellanos, Cody Bellinger, Austin Meadows, Brandon Lowe, Yancy Diaz, Luke Voit, Lourdes Gurriel Keep Dreaming) Trout, Ohtani, Jose Ramirez, Devers, Cron, Munetaka Murakami ( Japan 3B sensation) Free Agent Maybes) Mancini, JD Martinez, Brantley, Haniger, Bell, Pederson There are some pretty iffy guys on the Interesting list and I am sure I missed a few. -
As I look at our top prospects playing well, I was daydreaming about the near future. So I was thinking about what to do next year. Obviously we have a ton of Outfield talent and 7 quality starting options for next year (counting Small). Here is a go in no order. 1)Decline Wong's 10 million option (maybe pickup and trade if he ends the season well). 2) Trade for a middle of the order bat. I need to organize my thoughts on who but we need someone to impart more consistency in this lineup. I doubt we have money to afford a quality free agent. 3)Pickup Boxburger option. 4)Offer Rogers and Peterson fair deals but don't overpay. Something like 2/14 to Rogers and 1/4 with a 2nd club option for Jace. 5) Let Omar and Cutch walk. We have 4 (or 5) decent options at catcher and enough DH options that can do as well as Cutch. 6) Trade a starter, this might go with #2 depending on who is available.
