  1. Who is Jack Hostetler? Is he a free agent signing from last draft? I see he is 21 and had decent stats at Whitman but that name is new to me. Is he this years KC Hunt? Usually I am good at knowing most of our prospects but someone appears to slip through the cracks.
  2. I won't mind trying Hudson as a starter down the road, the issue will be if he can buildup enough stamina and stay healthy. With his size and extension he probably can be successful as a starter throwing 88-90 if he ends up with 4 solid pitches. At some point last year I thought we could maybe piggyback Misi and Hudson, if each can throw like 3 innings every 4 days that could be amazing. The opposites of the 90-92 mph of the lefty with 98-100 right would really mess with timing, especially if the we went like Ashby and Yoho to close (hard lefty to slower righty). I like the idea of giving Huddy 2 innings every 3 games. If he throws over 35-40 pitches make it 4 days. That likely ends up with 50 games and 100 innings give or likely take a few games/innings. That maximizes his value and makes a nice routine to keep his arm fresh.
  3. 3 for Iglesias seems like a crazy good deal, I like getting Quintana but if we could have landed Iglesias as well I would've been through the roof.
  4. I think we are at a point no big deals are going to happen. Probably just guys out of options or who are blocked.
  5. I like this for him especially with DL Hall out. Megill, Husdon, Koenig, Payamps seem like locks Mears, Peguero seem likely to make the team, Ashby is a question with the injury but likely a lock if healthy. Does that leave Connor Thomas, Tyler Alexander, and Rodriguez maybe Yoho battling for the last spot or 2 if Ashby is on the shelf? I still think it is likely Yoho starts in AAA just long enough to gain the extra year of control but I won't count him out completely. Have we had an Abner Uribe sighting yet or an update? Anderson and Wolfram haven't been great.
  6. I guess we could start a new thread because we are at the new season however the mlb pipeline top 30 is out. Overall I can't complain about to much that list. I would ad a young guy of Collins at 30 and a few guys could be a couple spots higher or lower but in general they did a really solid job in my opinion. https://www.mlb.com/milb/prospects/brewers/
  7. I think what has always troubled our hitters is that it seems to me like Quintana uses his pitches to set up his fastball better than almost anyone. Every time I have watched the Crew take on Quintana in the past 3 years or so, I find myself saying sit on the fastball (4 seem/sinker, I know they are 2 different pitches but basically the same speed) it is only 90-92, seems pretty straight (not sure on the results), and he throws it over 50% of the time. However we have never hit him well, I am sure the suttle differences in the 2 fastballs is the main reason. How we can get the most out of him is probably just little tweeks to get better spin on the curveball and changeup. In reality, our defense probably will be the biggest thing that can lead to an improvement for him. A guy who gets lots of contact going to one of the best defensive teams in the league should be helpful.
  8. Great move, this is the type of move that makes other organizations look dumb. Kikuchi is making 21 million a year and Quintana has flat out been better than him the past 3 years. There are probably 5 or 6 pitchers that have gotten around 15 million a year or more that Quintana has been better than but because he throws 90-92 he won't get as much. With this we have one of the deeper pitching staffs and now 6 guys who can be good enough to start playoff games, not counting prospects. It also allows us to go to a 6 man rotation when Woody comes back and save those arms a bit. I like moving Ashby back into the multi inning bullpen rile especially with the rough-ish start to spring.
  9. Nice, more experienced voices won't hurt. At this point, Arnold is established and successful enough to have guys like this around and command the room. Eppler in the scouting department should be helpful with the draft resources we have.
  10. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/02/out-of-options-2025.html Of guys out of options would anyone take a shot at Eguy Rosario, Oswald Peraza, or Gabriel Arias? There are some other guys on that list that I would expect to get cut but all of those guys could be decent 3B adds who are you get and have some upside.
  11. If we messed up Black it isnt from now, it would be from his early minors when we moved him from 2B to OF to 3B to 1B and didn't just pick one spot and keep him there or just keep him in the OF when he looked good there. I still believe in the bat, but finding PT might.
  12. I don't have a problem with that at all. I actually like Yeli at 2 and Contreras at 3 in that case. Turang or Sal at 2 when they are going good wouldnt be bad. That does kind of shrink the lineup but Mitchell and Rhys could be great 4/5 and make that a really good top of the order.
  13. Dunn has looked pretty good in spring even if it is under 20 abs. I have said this before, he has the tools to be a very good player. He recorded high sprint rates, played a solid 3B in a limited sample, and showed some power, and the ability in the minors to take a walk. I wouldnt be to surprised to see a .250/.333/.425 type guy who could get close to a 20/20 season with positive defense if things go well.
  14. Power can be replaced by the young guys hitting like 5 more each and then Yeli and/or Mitchell staying healthy. The rbi presence in the middle of the order hopefully will be Chourio, but with Chourio, Yeli, and William and hopefully at least 1 of Mitchell and Hoskins I think that can be covered. His defense wasn't great so that should give a 3rd base platoon/Ortiz to SS a little leeway. The big loss is in leadership and energy. I feel like we have enough vets to make up for the leadership and enough youth to maintain the energy throughout the entire year.
  15. Not all strikeouts are the same, sure a strikeout with a man on 1st is actually better than a ground out. In turn however, a strikeout with 1 out and a man on third is way way worse than a fly out or ground out. On top of that by not hitting the ball you don't have errors, bloopers, or dinky infield singles those are things that lead to crooked numbers. I get that at times strikouts aren't the end of the world but I will take a guy who strikes out less 8 or 9 times out of 10 times.
  16. I've said it a few times Mitchell has 30/30 potential with a gold glove ability. It may take a couple fully healthy years to meet that potential but there is a dude there.
  17. I don't see Swansen in the top 100 for MLB.com, as a senior from the big 10 without a standout skill I doubt he gets picked in the 1st couple rounds. Add in a rough start to the year and I don't see it, I don't mind him but maybe as like a 5th rounder. Here is my prospect crush, Chase Shores 6'8 245, throws upper 90's to 100. Had TJ and missed 2024 and most of 2023. Ranked 38 but has had a good start to the year, I doubt he stays ranked that low if he stays healthy but a 1st round option who could even save us slot money if he stays out of the top 30 rankings. I really like Kruz Schoolcraft a 17 yo HS 6'8 225 P/1B and 3B Xavier Neyens HS power hitter, however both will be long gone by our turn.
  18. The Plank Walker, The Buckler, The Yoho Oh-No-No Maybe we name all his pitches and The them "Ship, Captain, Crew"
  19. C- Contreras 1B-Rhys 2B-Turang SS- Ortiz 3B- Black (ehhh) OF-Chourio, Sal, Mitchell, Yeli (DH) Bench-Haase, Canha, Mone, Dunn SP- Freddy, Cortes, Civale, Myers, Ashby (Woody DL first week or two?) RP-Megill, Koenig, Hudson, Payamps, Mears, Peguero, E Rodriguez, C Thomas I will go with the 3 man mix of Munn, Dunn, Black at 3B. I think Yoho makes it obvious he should get a chance but the org, stays true to our motto and give Connor Thomas a chance and then in a month (when Yoho gains the extra year of control) we see Yoho. I don't know why but I will go with Elvin over the other bullpen options.
  20. Obviously this is to early to fully know who makes the team but I think there will be a lot of good discussion on this before the season starts.
  21. It all depends on his defense for me, I think I put his bat ahead of all the other options at 3B or 1B platoon but what does he look like on the grass. If he is close to the others defensively I start him in the bigs either at 3rd everyday (super nervous about this) or in a super platoon role spliting 1st with Rhys, a little 3rd with the other utility guy/guys, and also as a OF and DH when needed. His numbers really fell with a late slump in AAA but he was a better hitter before the mlb callup and inconsistent pt. I think the biggest thing is that when he comes up he needs some consistent playing time/ab's. Give him like a full month of everyday work before we make up our minds one way or the other. It seemed like he played a game or two than sat a game or two back and forth for the time he was up last year and I can see how that might be hard for a young guy, especially one who has switched positions like 4 times.
  22. I know we don't need more relief help but if the price on Kyle Finnegan or David Robertson comes down enough to say 1/5 what are thoughts on getting a solid vet reliever? In theory, we have a bunch of late inning quality arms but overall there isn't a lot of late inning experience after Megill and Payamps. I still like the idea of trading a bullpen arm or two for a blocked 3rd baseman, if that happens I would be all over either guy if they are discounted. I do still think Robertson will sign a more lucrative deal once there is a couple meaningful bullpen injuries over the next couple weeks, but I could see Finnegan having to take a reduced salary just to be on a team opening day.
  23. Let's not over react to 1 good spring training game. The is Dunn, Mone, Collins, Durbin, and Black all in front of him, I still say it is more likely that he losses the 40 man spot than get on the mlb roster. He only hit .261 in AAA and every team has a couple Vinny Capra type players. I like him overall but I still doubt we see much of him.
  24. I think we had this discussion last year in a minor league forum and the one I liked best was "The Air-Ender"
  25. If we could do McMahon for couple of lower ranked prospects (and the Rockies eat 6-14 million, better prospects for more money eaten or Rhys could go) I would be ok with this but my concern with him is the strikeouts. I don't see a path where he hits better out of Coors, his splits aren't terrible and he can play a good 3rd and 1st if we would need him to move. There is at least good consistency from him, he has been a 2-4 WAR player for basically his entire career.
