  1. I was just saying something like that to a friend the other day. He's basically made himself the big fish in the smallest pond, instead of trying to fight his way into a huge pond elsewhere. I think it was a smart move in the long run.
  2. I agree. If Dye could be had on the cheap, and they could release Hart to save money for a mid-season move, then I think it could be worthwhile. However, every indication is that Dye would be almost as expensive as Hart. At that point, it just isn't much of a value. I do wonder if Hart could possibly be dealt for some minor league pitching depth, and someone like Heether or Katin could split time with Edmonds and Gerut.
  3. He definitely improved last year. He'll never be a gold glover; but he's at a point where his defense isn't a liability in the field, which is something you couldn't say in previous seasons. As far as Braun, I don't want to start another whole defense metrics argument, but I don't think his defense is as bad as some claim. I think he'll continue improving as he matures as a player. Besides, it's not like LF is considered a premium defensive position to begin with, as I'm not seeing too many guys in the NL I'd consider better than him at the same position.
  4. Definitely some were, but the broadcasters made it sound like the wind was helping. I'm not that worried about Wolf's performance in the last ST game. I'd rather have him hold back a bit than wear himself out before next week. As far as Stetter, at least if he falters, we have Axford waiting in the wings.
  5. I thought Braun did qualify as Super 2 and is actually going to make over $50 million on his contract. I admit I could be completely wrong, though.
  6. Not a horrible idea, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't have any options left.
  7. Supposedly he already turned down a deal around $3.5 million from the Cubs. If he's looking for that kind of money given his rapidly declining skills, and given the current market as far as veteran players, the criticism is warranted.
  8. It could be a matter where Melvin simply called Dye's agent, found out he was asking a crazy amount for his services, and then passed.
  9. It sounds like the wind is carrying out pretty hard today, so that could have a lot to do with it. Counsell hit one as well, so that seems like it may be the case.
  10. Is Salmone the guy that replaced Lou Palmso as the stud catching prospect?
  11. Well, here's some fuel to the fire, courtesy of MLB Trade Rumors: The Brewers made a run at free agent outfielder Jermaine Dye within the last week, report Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, but the talks reached an impasse for unknown reasons. The FOX writers say the Brewers are unhappy with Corey Hart, and might've tried trading him if they'd signed Dye. Brewers GM Doug Melvin told WSSP 1250 a few days ago that Hart might not have right field locked up, with Jim Edmonds in the mix. Rosenthal and Morosi say Melvin discussed Hart with the Nationals.
  12. I think one thing that is somewhat perplexing is how silent Melvin and Macha have been on Parra all spring. It doesn't seem like they really have a defined role for him in mind. Then again, his relatively poor showing may have contributed to this.
  13. I was disappointed that I didn't see any "Cactus League Nachos" at Maryvale during my spring training visit. My favorite Miller Park food item by far.
  14. Most of the price changes don't seem that horrible. I think the brat prices are getting a little bit ridiculous, since quite frankly, I don't think the brats are that high quality to begin with. I do like that they're adding some new food options. I'm particularly interested in trying the ravioli and burritos. Kind of nice to see them expanding the choices; since seeing some of the options at various spring training parks has made me question why we basically just get brats/dogs and burgers as entree options.
  15. That is a big crux of my concern. If this team is in contention, they may need to make a move again to put them "over the hump". $3-4 million extra in available budget could make a big difference at that point.
  16. MJLiverock makes a good point. People have to remember that at the time that the Brewers still weren't considered much of a "legit" MLB franchise. Suppan probably at least partly wanted to know the team was serious about being competitive, not just offering him a bunch of money to make a token free agent signing (though certainly the dollar amount was the deciding factor). Meeting with the owner likely helped, but I don't see it as being that unusual, or being a sign of a meddling owner. I just don't believe that Attanasio totally high jacked the team because he was so enamored with Jeff Suppan after helping the Cards win the World Series, as some suggest. We also have to remember how hard up for starting pitching the team had been at the time. As far as Hart, I keep going back to how much sense it makes to pay a bench player over $4 million, when cheaper options are available. Jermaine Dye might not be the answer, but there are guys in AAA who could probably complement Gerut and Edmonds for a much lower price point.
  17. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/89692512.html Details on Opening Day. Says the lots will open at 10AM, gates to the park will open two hours before game time.
  18. Is this sarcasm? Actually it was just announced that the original Opening Day pitching/catching battery (the names escape me at the moment) will be having the first pitch on Opening Day this season. Any of us old enough to remember when you heard the official news that the Braves would be leaving town after '64 (turns out they were forced to stay one more lame-duck year - '65) the feeling you had in the pit of your stomach for four seasons of no baseball at Milwaukee County Stadium. I was not, but my dad was. They broke his 13 year old heart. Had to have been dark days indeed for that four year span.
  19. Yeah, it sounds like they've been talking about him as a possible future closer. Would not be a bad thing if he can step up and fill that role in the next season or two when Hoffman inevitably retires.
  20. Just curious where you're hearing this? Any other details?
  21. Apparently Macha is considering giving Edmonds the start in right field on Opening Day. You have to wonder if Edmonds gets off to a hot start, if Hart will just be relegated to a pinch hitter role. If that's the case, I think they should just release him (as I stated earlier).
  22. I just don't see how they can possibly say Narveson hasn't earned a rotation spot at this point. Maybe they don't think he could go long enough in his starts. Maybe they don't think Suppan could be effective at all coming out of the pen. Still at this point, the writing seems to be on the wall. I just hope when Suppan inevitably does start, he is given a VERY short leash. Like, two bad starts and he should be DFAed/cut/whatever.
  23. Here's what I would go with: 1. Weeks 2. Escobar 3. Braun 4. Fielder 5. Zaun 6. McGehee 7. Edmonds 8. Gomez 9. Gallardo
