  1. It was reported that Melvin was trying to trade for Halladay before the July 31st deadline, so I'd be surprised if he doesn't at least inquire about him again.
  2. AJ Burnett seems like a valid comparison, and supposedly Lackey and/or his agent have said that's the type of contract he's after. 5 years, $82.5 million was what Burnett got. Doesn't seem that outrageous for a 30 year old pitcher to me. Lackey and Gallardo at the top of the rotation for the next several years would look pretty good, and hopefully in a year or two we'd have some of those younger guys coming up from the system to fill the back end. Just not sure the Brewers have any realistic chance of getting him if some team like Boston or L.A. jumps into the bidding.
  3. Ken Rosenthal is reporting. $7 million salary, plus an option for $6.5 million in 2011 that vests if he finishes 50 games this season. Red Sox stand to get the Braves' first round pick and supplemental pick as compensation since they offered Wagner arbitration. Seems like this makes the Hoffman signing that much more logical for the Brewers.
  4. Well, I would think the fact that he is a Boras client (not sure why that has been so overlooked, so thanks for bringing it up endaround) would point to him almost certainly declining arbitration, not accepting it.
  5. Yes, I see that. Fortunately the sound stays off unless you choose to raise the volume. Doesn't seem very targeted...I'm not sure I'm a good candidate for the Reebook Easytone shoes.
  6. The difference between Bush and Suppan, is that non-tendering Bush saves money, while we are paying Suppan one way or the other. This is a valid point, FtJ...but if he only uses the extra money to sign a Davis/Washburn type, no doubt for a higher salary, I'm not sure how sensible the "upgrade" is.
  7. No way Lackey gets a Zito type contract. Lackey is older and teams have seen how badly burned the Giants got on that.
  8. And we had a need for a leadoff hitter at the time. Melvin didn't give up anything valuable to get him either. Apparently Melvin is meeting with Mark Attanasio today in LA to "get the financial ducks in a row" to determine what they'll be offering to FA starting pitchers. These next few weeks are going to determine a lot about the future of the Brewers and whether or not Melvin is GM after this season, I think.
  9. I'm not sure why all the "non-tender Bush" talk has come up. He was pretty good last year until he got hurt. You really can't look at his ERA last season without considering the other factors. He's never pitched a full season that poorly. Clearly that line drive off his arm affected him. I'd still take him over Suppan or Looper at this point.
  10. I assume if something like this was possible, it would have been done by now. There must be some logistical reasons for it not happening.
  11. I don't see how they could really be that bad. Everyone was freaking out last year, but they signed that big deal with Potawotamie, inked a new TV contract (which we still haven't heard any figures on), and still drew over 3 million fans. It seems like it would be rather disingenuous to cry poor at this point. I know the economy still isn't great, but it's supposedly better than it was last off-season. I'm not saying they necessarily have the resources to increase payroll, but it should be about where it was at the start of last season.
  12. The thing to remember with McGehee is he seemed to have nagging injury issues all season, but was still quite serviceable defensively at 3B. I think he could be fine at 2B if he is fully healthy in 2010. They really should try to get Counsell re-signed soon though.
  13. I'd be interested in seeing those comments from Henry that you're referring to, kramnoj.
  14. I would not be surprised at all if Brian Anderson ends up getting a full time national broadcasting gig eventually. He got a lot of praise for his work in the post-season. I think a lot of Brewers fans are going to miss him someday, frankly.
  15. You almost wonder if the teams are all holding the line by not offering arbitration en masse again.
  16. And I really question what anyone is basing that on at this point. I was hoping they would offer arbitration to Lopez...it seemed almost certain that he would turn it down. I guess Melvin just wants to ensure as much financial flexibility as possible.
  17. FYI, Wolf was not offered arbitration. I expect a lot of teams to have interest in him.
  18. I'm sure Matty V is pretty happy with his job at MLB Network.
  19. I remember when he used to be a name repeated ad nauseum in trade proposals around here. Seems like his stock has fallen quite a bit after a bad 2009 season.
  20. The whole Weeks situation at second base has bugged me for quite a while. As everyone knows, he missed almost a full season, and while I'm sure he'll come to spring training healthy and ready to play, there is no way knowing going forward what kind of player he will be. He was just showing flashes of reaching the potential so many were proclaiming he had for some long, then suffered a serious injury. He could be coming back with reduced skill and power. I hope not, but I think it is somewhat foolish to expect him to come back and play at an optimum level with no backup plan. Hopefully Melvin has Craig Counsell or someone else nearly locked up for next year. Rickie Weeks' history shows that it's more than likely a backup will be needed at 2B at some point this season.
  21. Yeah, I'm thinking roughly around $15 million might be correct, JohnBriggs.
  22. Sounds like the Brewers won't be offering arbitration to anyone, according to Haudricourt's latest comments on his blog. Sounds like they don't want to risk tying up any additional money at all, and want as much flexibility to go after pitching as they can create. I guess it makes sense, though I was half-hoping Lopez will still be around next year somehow.
  23. Seems like the more this type of stuff gets out, the more the asking price has to be dropping (in theory). I hope Melvin is at least talking with Toronto, though I still expect he'll end up on the East Coast somewhere.
  24. Sorry if this was mentioned already, but there's a nice article on Jennings in the latest Sports Illustrated.
  25. Hearing people bring up the All-Star Game tie as a reason to dislike Selig reminds me of those "fans" I encounter every once in a while that no longer watch baseball because of the strike back in '94. It's like, "let it go already." Personally, while I think the idea of a tie was kind of stupid at the time, at least it makes people remember that game. If that game hadn't ended in a tie, I doubt it would have been that much more memorable than others.
