  1. Prince himself should bring back 3-4 quality MLB ready players. Shouldn't have to throw in a top prospect to get something decent in return, if that is the route Melvin eventually takes.
  2. The nice thing about Millwood is he'd only be under control for a year. Assuming the salary is offset somewhat, it might be a short term fix that would allow the Crew to be more aggressive in the FA pitching market after 2010.
  3. Really sorry to hear about your dog. That makes me sick to think about.
  4. McCalvy has a blog up stating that the Rangers and Brewers haven't talked in "several weeks", so I'm not sure how much validity there is to the report. I guess I'd be OK with getting him for a year if we just have to give up Corey Hart or someone else relatively expendable.
  5. Going to be looking at a long term stay hotel...I can get a discount through a connection I have, but I can only book it less than 90 days out to get the discount. Booked the flight today, and got a pretty good rate through Southwest (only downside there is a change over in Las Vegas both ways). I also got a great deal on a Budget car rental by using the reward points on my credit card. Only going to end up paying about $20 for a week long car rental. We'll be down there March 20th-27th. I know a lot of you are going earlier in the month, but if anyone is going to be around during that time frame, I would love to meet up.
  6. I think you're right, kramnoj. I remember President Clinton publicly calling for baseball to resume for the good of the country. There was intense pressure on MLB to have a normal season after scrapping the World Series in '94. You are correct that the internet media and MLB Network have been huge boons, too. MLB Network was one of the biggest channel launches ever, and if you compare it to NFL Network and Big 10, MLB Network got it right, whereas those other channels really struggled to gain carriage and attract advertising. Hopefully these sorts of new media initiatives lay the groundwork for more revenue sharing in the future ala the NFL.
  7. "wow. there are 0 good players/prospects in this trade proposal. Is that all it takes to land a young, cost-controlled ace?" You really don't think McGehee or Salome or any good? You really don't think Gomez has any upside at all? Come on. I don't think we can trade Jeffress right now due to his suspension, and I admit to not being that familiar with Rivas. I have to admit I'm a bit perplexed by the recent rash of trade proposals on this forum including Gomez, though. Who would be playing center field next year if we trade him right now? Please don't suggest Mike Cameron either.
  8. Yeah, I read that the other night and shook my head at most of it. He claims the Brewers shouldn't have re-signed Hoffman and gone with "one of the other great closers on the market" for less, but doesn't actually suggest anyone. No mention of how good Hoffman was last year, either. He seems to not really present a firm plan for the Brewers to upgrade their pitching, suggesting trading for the likes of Derek Lowe, but also suggesting they go hard after Lackey. Yeah, maybe if they can balloon their payroll to around $100 million, otherwise there's no chance of that happening.
  9. I made this point on the MLBTR board, but Selig is just the Commissioner of Baseball, not the Emperor of Baseball. I don't know how much more people really expected him to do without becoming completely irrational in their opinions. I think this point from Baldkin sums it up perfectly: What gets me the most is, he was supposed to have avoided a players strike and gotten this exorbitant drug testing program and a salary cap! You ask people "How?" They never have an answer or even the hint of a suggestion. I think his biggest mistake was not letting the strike go longer. Of course, that could have crippled the sport financially for many years, so that was probably an untenable position. I just think the sport may have been better off in the long run if they had forced the salary cap and some other issues. Then again, I'm not convinced a salary cap is the answer. I think most casual fans look at the other sports and assume baseball should be like the NFL or NBA and have one too. Personally, I love interleague play and the Wild Card. I wish he would fix the unbalanced divisions, but maybe that's something he can take care of before he leaves office.
  10. I pretty much agree. People tend to blur the line between Selig's ownership tenure in Milwaukee (especially the latter part, ignoring that he did get Miller Park built and kept the team in Wisconsin) with his tenure as commissioner. Two completely different things.
  11. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/chi-29-rogers-inside-baseball-nov29,0,7878474.column Selig is entering the closing chapters of his tenure. He made that point semi-officially during an owners meeting in Chicago in mid-November. According to sources, a group of five owners approached the 75-year-old Selig about remaining on the job beyond the end of his contract, which expires after the 2012 season. It was the same kind of approach that had been used to convince him to stay in charge at least two other times, the first being after he stepped in as head of the executive council to lead ownership after Fay Vincent[/i] was forced to resign as commissioner in 1992. Selig's tenure most recently had been scheduled to end in 2009, but his deal was extended quietly in early 2008. This time, according to sources, Selig told the owners he will step aside after 2012 -- not because he is tiring but because he has other things to do while he's able. Reached at his Milwaukee office Wednesday, Selig declined to discuss his conversations with ownership but confirmed he plans to stay on the job three more years. That means the next labor agreement, due to be negotiated in 2011, would be his final official act. --- I personally think Selig has done much more good than bad during his tenure. I know some fans are still upset about the state of the game (inequity in small markets, etc), but I think Selig has by and large done as much as he can. There's no denying how successful the game is today, and much of that has to do with Selig's initiatives as commissioner.
  12. Yeah, that's one thing I questioned when a lot of people complained about the Hardy trade. No one really seemed to lay out a plan of how the Crew would have added decent SP with Cameron and Hardy still on board. This was also the first time I'd heard Melvin acknowledge any sort of possibility of moving Gamel to the outfield, which is sort of interesting.
  13. This is a discussion forum, though. There is inevitably going to be debate, even on opinions. It's supposed to be fun and interesting. Unfortunately, sometimes things can cross a line, but that's what the moderators are supposed to be for. I've said this before, but do we always have to walk on egg shells around here? Like I said earlier, there are certain realities of the modern internet that people should accept before posting on a public forum.
  14. The affordability of Braun's contract, coupled with the fact that he is a premier hitter, is the reason you don't trade him. I hope he retires a Brewer, frankly.
  15. The latest buzz on MLBTR this morning says the Jays want "an MLB-ready arm and bat" both "young and affordable for several years" for Halladay. I think we can come up with the bat pretty easily (Mat Gamel or someone else). The pitching, maybe not so much. I doubt Manny Parra would cut it when a team like the Red Sox could offer up someone much better.
  16. "The Brewers are in a great position in that they have two talented catching prospects that are on the cusp of playing in the big-leagues. That is a great problem to have, regardless of your preference between the two." Amen to that. Look at some of the starting catchers the Brewers have had just a few short years ago. I think Salome and/or Lucroy will be a big step up from the likes of Chad Moeller (no offense to Mr. Moeller).
  17. I don't think the Brewers would even be willing to trade for him unless they can get an extension done. There have been rumblings that Halladay is going to be very picky about where he goes to next. I expect him to land on the East Coast, not Milwaukee.
  18. I'm just wondering if you're saying this is the fault of the general population here, one or two confrontational posters, or the "celebrities" themselves? Maybe the problem goes both ways.
  19. Not to get too sidetracked, but I hope that this is a sign that W/L record for pitchers has become even more of a borderline meaningless stat.
  20. Uh, well since there's no way the Brewers will trade Gallardo, I guess this discussion becomes kind of moot.
  21. Had a nice relaxing day watching the Packers game at my parents and then had a nice meal. Overall a very nice day. I hope everyone else had an equally enjoyable Thanksgiving.
  22. If he is that obtainable, what is stopping a team like the Red Sox from getting him instead by offering a slightly better deal?
  23. Better cutting the chord than cutting the cheese, I guess.
  24. That's the kind of snow I like...the kind that melts instantly and isn't visible the next day. I picked up my snow blower from the shop yesterday, after having it set up for winter. I should be good to go.
  25. Crew07, I probably would have called 911 and remoted them as driving impaired, but that's just me. I cannot stand tailgaters. If I can't see their headlamps, they're too close. Just last week, I was fortunate enough to finally buy a new car (actually it was used, but only had 6000 miles on it). The very next day I was driving up to Oconomowoc, and inevitably getting tailgated very closely on Hwy 26 by a female driver who appeared to be about college age. I kept noticing she kept glancing down every few seconds. I assume she was texting on her phone. Eventually I was able to turn off and let her pass. I wasn't going to let her bang up my new car.
