  1. I agree that Gamel should get more playing time, but I'm sick of seeing him make outs on the first pitch. He needs to adjust.
  2. There's a phrase I've heard used before. "At some point you have to stop rebuilding and start building." I wonder when the Pirates will do that.
  3. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have traded Nate McLouth to Atlanta for three prospects. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/06/braves-acquire-nate-mclouth.html#comments
  4. Before stuff like that starts happening more regularly I would hope MLB would fix the draft system in general, particularly with international players, like you cited.
  5. What a strange move by the Braves. I guess I don't get it. I hope Melvin at least calls him.
  6. I think Tim Dillard might deserve a shot at this point. 3.68 ERA and 1.33 WHIP through 10 starts. That would probably still translate to better stats in the majors than what Parra is showing right now.
  7. Yeah, I think the signing made sense at the time. It's too bad it's going to go down as a complete waste of money. I hope the Brewers had insurance on his contract to cover at least some of the amount they threw away.
  8. I agree with FtJ for the most part. I don't necessarily agree doing nothing is a reasonable option at this point, though. I guess I just don't see how one can reasonably expect that Parra won't continue struggling at this point. Last night's start was just that bad. There have to be consequences at this point for continued failure.
  9. Trying to tank a season in baseball to get a specific draft pick is almost impossible, and also dumb since there's virtually no chance he would be up with your big league club right away.
  10. Some around here always want to hold onto young players no matter what, and just hope they somehow turn it around. I don't get it, but that's fine, I guess. I'd rather trade him at this point. I've seen enough. It's becoming clear this rotation is going to need a mid-season upgrade if we're actually going to make the playoffs again. If you can get a good pitcher who will be upgrade over what we have, and have to part with Parra to do it, so be it. We basically have a #1 pitcher, a couple #3/4 guys, a #5 (Suppan), and a guy who shouldn't be in the rotation right now (Parra). That's not going to cut it all season long.
  11. Hmmmm...that is kind of odd. I don't think you can read too much into it at this point though.
  12. Unfortunately I don't see him being much of a trading chip at this point.
  13. I think if they had to take someone out of the bullpen, it would probably be McClung...but really I'd rather they not mess with something that's been working.
  14. Well, the offense hasn't exactly done much tonight, but it's not like Parra gave them any realistic chance to win. Great job by Burns tonight. Hopefully he can stick around and continue to be a positive contributor.
  15. Tim Dillard is probably an answer for a short term replacement...I would not be surprised if Melvin is seriously looking at options outside the organization to bolster the rotation, though. I do think Parra should be sent down though, at least for a while. He just doesn't instill any confidence that the team will have a chance to win when he is on the mound.
  16. It's a blog. The guidelines for journalism tend to be looser with blog entries than with actual newspaper articles. You may not like it, but that's how it is.
  17. This gem from Haudricourt via Twitter: "We're 15 minutes from game time and I'd say there are 250 people in lovely Land Shark Stadium. Shorter to introduce the fans than players." And of course now the rain delay is official.
  18. It was reported that Macha and Melvin met after the game, so I'm sure there was a discussion before the decision was made to release Julio.
  19. Just got a tweet from Gord Ash that Riske indeed underwent Tommy John surgery and is out for the rest of the year.
  20. If you guys are going to keep analyzing Fangraphs, maybe you should take this discussion to "Statistical Analysis."
  21. Maybe he was worth that last year based on that analysis referenced, but he's sure not going to get close to that amount any time soon, so I'm not sure why this discussion is continuing in this thread which was supposed to be about where Sheets might end up. Based on the link I posted earlier, it's sounding like he might not even pitch this season.
  22. Yeah, I remember that discussion. I don't know why the terms haven't leaked out at all yet. I assume the Brewers were able to negotiate something fairly lucrative compared to their last deal, though.
  23. Julio had been OK in his last few starts, but last night resumed his pattern of awfulness. So, I think the timing was about right.
  24. I guess I was on the right track when I asked about Burns earlier. Hopefully he does well and justifies this opportunity.
  25. Neither sound too serious at this point, according to what Haudricourt has posted. Braun was taken out more as a precaution, and Cameron might be unavailable today, but that's about it.
