Although no one loves parting with prospects, I feel like the Brewers have so much depth on the farm to trade from. I would like to see them put together a solid package for some controllable big league talent. They could do that 3 times over and still have one of the best farms in ball.

Love the article and everything I’m reading in it! Puts a smile on my face :) As a side note it is interesting to me that they are perceived as being one of the best at developing hitting. That is something that I in fact feel they have struggled with. I do think they are turning a corner here with Jackson leading the way, but aside from him I think they’re gonna have to wait a while before they should be considered good at developing the hitting side of things. They’re pretty much elite at developing everything else.

Yeah I’d love to know what they’re basing cutting Brice Turang’s WAR in half on. Do they think he’ll stop playing defense and running the bases?

Good write up! I see a lot of people feeling quite sanguine on Mears, I think he sucks and has a natural losers mentality. I don’t mean to sound harsh, I just don’t think he has any moxie. I think quad A guys like Mears and the oft lionized Connor Thomas will be toast by mid May, making room for guys like Yoho and perhaps even the Miz.

Hell come to think of it, I think they should sign Wade to be a player/coach. He could have some duties akin to a part time assistant pitching coach, kinda like they had Jason Lane do a couple years back. Lane was half pitching coach/half hitting coach when he started.

I think people are putting a little too much stock in Connor Thomas. The Brewers have had tons of success with pitchers; there’s also plenty they haven’t been able to help/get anything out of. There’s just as good a chance he washes out in Spring Training as he has at sticking. On to Miley, there’s nothing to say the Brewers don’t want to start the year with a 6 man rotation. He’s fine for that role. The TJ he had is much less invasive than the normal one. There’s literally a chance he could come back throwing a mph or two harder. I wouldn’t put my money on him necessarily. But Miley is crafty as hell. He’s a tricksy fox. I’d put money on him over some bloke named Connor Thomas.

Even though it’s not as important as tunneling and pitch movement, it’s also frustrating that the velocity bands on his slider and curveball have grown closer together.

Great article. Many good ideas. Also why on earth would the Crew keep a confirmed bum like Mears over a bullpen work horse in Payamps? Payamps’ year was slightly down last year and he still was a good player. He’s dependable, healthy, and has good stuff. He also is one of the few veterans in the bullpen. Mears has never been good, had immediate health trouble upon being acquired, and has always found a way to pitch well below what his stuff would indicate. Also I would not bank on Thomas staying on the roster this year. He was a rule 5 flyer. They will see how he looks in spring and go from there. He is guaranteed nothing this year.

I simply do not like Diamond/Bally as an organization, but this can only be good for this year’s payroll. Whether that’s leaving room for midseason additions or like mentioned above, not having to make any further payroll cuts, this is nice. Like perhaps if Arnold was feeling pressure to lower payroll by trading Aaron Civale, I would imagine that now that is not the case. Nothing drastic, but when you’re penny pinching, something like this can be a nice surprise boon.

I was agreeing with everything this article said until the mention of Mike Boeve and especially Yophery Rodriguez. I think that either of those guys would be a shocking overpay for Baty.

Out of all the Brewer’s crop of ten or so starting pitchers/depth/shuttle guys, there aren’t too many that have benefited from a move to the bullpen more than Ashby. Even in 2022, he was far better in the bullpen, where he can avoid the big inning that has plagued him for most of his career. A lot of guys improve in the bullpen because their stuff plays up, but Ashby’s stuff and velocity are great when he is healthy, no matter the role. Whether it’s mental or he just physically wears down by the third or fourth inning and loses control, his command issues pop up a lot more when he’s starting. Furthermore, he is just downright dominant out of the bullpen in multiple situations and can give a couple innings as well. He’s had a long, arduous path back to health and performance - why mess with that when he finally settled in to a dominant role at the end of last season? The risk seems pretty great. Essentially, I just think they have a lot of other guys they can start who are a) more dependable in a starting role, and b) don’t have as great a risk as Ashby seems to have. A full season of what he did out of the bullpen last year would be downright awesome right?

I know they’re operating on a really tight budget but I actually think they will be keeping them both going into the season. I doubt the Brewers brass is counting on Woodruff for any serious innings in their pre-year formulations. Hoping yes, planning on it yes, counting on it, no. Ashby has been terrible as a starter his entire big league career and dominant as a multi inning reliever. DL Hall has yet to prove he can be relied upon in his entire pro career, although he did look very good at the end of last season. Known quantities like Cortes the killer and Civale are probably much wanted and appreciated after using a record number starting pitchers last year.

I think the Cubs got hosed. Seeing the Yankees being unable to resign Soto - there’s no guarantee any team gets to resign these super free agents. The Cubs swung huge and if they don’t resign him they just gave up 3 building blocks. And they’re not one piece away this year so i don’t get it. Matter of fact I’m glad 😄 Call me crazy!

For some reason I’ve been feeling like Cortes was a Brewers candidate for a few years. I thought he made a lot of sense for them at the tradeline last year.

It’s not so much that I invest much in prospects lists, (although I take them far more seriously than GM posturing speak) it’s just that the author referred to him as a Yankees top prospect. I haven’t found confirmation or agreement of that anywhere. And his batted ball data and other stats do not suggest the same. Also, AFL hype is not a great barometer of MLB success. I hope I am wrong. Some of the numbers you included were very intriguing. Also MLB.com just ranked him as the Crew’s 15th prospect, which is also intriguing. I think he was a good pickup. I also think he looks like a nice utility man. But I don’t think his inclusion in this trade is “stunning”, and I’m also not confident he was a top Yankees prospect.

I’ve liked Cortes and think this is good. Saving 4.5 million is great too. Durbin seems like a nice piece but I’m not as sanguine about him as this wonderful author seems to be. I haven’t been able to find him ranked anywhere near a top prospect for the Yankees. Where am I forgetting to look?

Very well written piece. And I’m sad about this is well. I don’t understand why they let go of Ozzie Timmons, and bummed me out. Now losing Q and Mickinven is unfortunate.

Showing that picture of Sophia, I have in mind to ask - does anyone foresee a change in analysts or will they just jump employment from the fascists at Ballee and head over to MLB? I like our announcers and would be loath for the team to part with any of them.

Great point and my thoughts as well. One other thing I’ve started to think about Freddy is, his stuff used to indicate he was good at spinning but not so much at pronating. But now he has been turning over his change up so beautifully, I’m wondering if it is time to start adding a two seam/sinker to his mix. It would help make him less fly ball reliant, just something to throw early in counts.
