    For some reason I’ve been feeling like Cortes was a Brewers candidate for a few years. I thought he made a lot of sense for them at the tradeline last year.

    It’s not so much that I invest much in prospects lists, (although I take them far more seriously than GM posturing speak) it’s just that the author referred to him as a Yankees top prospect. I haven’t found confirmation or agreement of that anywhere. And his batted ball data and other stats do not suggest the same. Also, AFL hype is not a great barometer of MLB success. I hope I am wrong. Some of the numbers you included were very intriguing. Also MLB.com just ranked him as the Crew’s 15th prospect, which is also intriguing. I think he was a good pickup. I also think he looks like a nice utility man. But I don’t think his inclusion in this trade is “stunning”, and I’m also not confident he was a top Yankees prospect.

    I’ve liked Cortes and think this is good. Saving 4.5 million is great too. Durbin seems like a nice piece but I’m not as sanguine about him as this wonderful author seems to be. I haven’t been able to find him ranked anywhere near a top prospect for the Yankees. Where am I forgetting to look?

    I like Teresa. I’ll miss her. All I gotta say is, the most important thing to me is that Larry Hisle is still helpin the children.

    Very well written piece. And I’m sad about this is well. I don’t understand why they let go of Ozzie Timmons, and bummed me out. Now losing Q and Mickinven is unfortunate.

    Showing that picture of Sophia, I have in mind to ask - does anyone foresee a change in analysts or will they just jump employment from the fascists at Ballee and head over to MLB? I like our announcers and would be loath for the team to part with any of them.

    Great point and my thoughts as well. One other thing I’ve started to think about Freddy is, his stuff used to indicate he was good at spinning but not so much at pronating. But now he has been turning over his change up so beautifully, I’m wondering if it is time to start adding a two seam/sinker to his mix. It would help make him less fly ball reliant, just something to throw early in counts.

    Glad you wrote about this. This is one of the very few things that has made me furious with Murph multiple times this year. The stubbornness on his usage is shocking.

    I’ve been critical of the Brewers before, particularly in regards to Counsell’s entire views and treatment of the offense, and on the Brewers inability to develop talented hitters over a good stretch. However, the last few years their draft and development team is as good as it gets in baseball. I have to give them the benefit of the doubt. Just like the Hader trade, there is a strong possibility 2 or 3 years from now we are very pleasantly surprised by the outcome of this draft. In fact, we may be very please by next year when we see who they get with the extra draft pick in a deeper class.

    Also, they had an entire offseason to work with Rea and Wilson, they have very limited time with this guy.

    These are the kind of lateral moves that aren’t great. Maybe they will work their magic with him, but Junis was doing just fine. They have such a deep farm. You can’t keep every prospect. Sometimes you have to make clear cut positive additions, not lateral ones and HOPE you can turn someone around in a few weeks. So far Civale has been so so. He was their flyer. They don’t need another one. I mean really, Junis has a great case for being the better of these two players right now…. Very disappointed in their tradeline approach so far.

    Great piece. Good stuff. I would love Wade or Lowe. It would be nice to see Arnold make an impact trade or two and not just fringe of the roster stuff. And I’m not talking about some huge trade, but they have such a deep, deep farm system that they could easily pry one or both of those guys loose. Also, why does everyone seem so certain Turang won’t be able to bust out of this slump and hit like he was earlier in the season?

    Fantastic! Agree with these sentiments. I have to say though, when I’m being honest with myself, I just really don’t think Hall has the gumption, fortitude, and control to be a starter. Even beyond this year. I know his ability to add some length is tantalizing, but at least for the rest of this year he should be tried as a one inning reliever, like last year, where he doesn’t have to think/preserve strength as much and can just let it go. That’s what it looks like to my eyes at least. Of course, mine eyes occasionally lie :)

    Very interesting points made. I’ll be ruminating on said points over the next few weeks. Thank you. Also, do you really assess the Crew’s farm system is average or slightly below? They may lack the high-end talent they enjoyed the past couple seasons, although they still have a solid amount of that, but they appear to have one of, if not the deepest systems in baseball. Thoughts?

    I know no team is perfect, but for a team like the Rays, how could they have missed this? Usually a change is made to a pitcher’s approach when they are a reclamation project or someone who has failed to live up to their talent level, not a veteran who is acquired midway through a successful season. What were they thinking last year, and why not make the correction once they saw the poor results? Very unlike them. I am even more heartened about the trade after reading this great post!

    Here’s what drives me almost mad…..last night for some strange reason, Payamps refused to use a changeup against Cronenwerth even though he’s a left handed hitter. He instead hangs his regressed slider down the middle to lose the game. Today, even though Rea sucks against lefties, his splitter has played well as of late. He REFUSES to throw one against Cronenwerth, instead hangs a breaking ball down the middle to blow the lead. Then the very next pitch, he throws a splitter to a right handed hitter for a double!? Why are they not using proper pitches against the respective handed hitter they’re facing!!!!? Seriously, between these pitchers, William, and the coaching staff, this is unbelievably stupid.

    Jake, thank you so much. Upon my word, this article was eloquent, nice, and sexy. Can you expound at all on Yoho’s freakish arsenal? What are his other pitches outside fastball/change and whats his velo topping at these days. Lastly, what was it that made the pitching brass decide to turn Smith into a starter mid season? A somewhat strange decision but appearing to work out admirably :) Whats his third pitch after his power fastball/breaking ball combo? Thanks again for all the wonderful stuff.
