  1. Add Mike Fiers to the list. Out 9-12 weeks with broken throwing arm: http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/06/16/mike-fiers-broke-his-right-arm-saturday-at-aaa-nashville/
  2. Moving this from the draft forum, since it's on topic here. I agree there should be major changes to the MLB Draft. I'd like to see it modeled after the NHL Draft, including the drafting of all international players. The number of high-level talented international hockey players should be comparable to the number of similar level baseball players. The NHL Draft rules regarding college players and international draftees are much better than any of the other major sports. Having control of a player drafted who then goes to play NCAA baseball would result in an immense shift for how MLB organizations approach scouting and drafting. A summary of what the NHL Draft rules can be found at this link: http://proicehockey.about.com/od/prospects/a/How-The-Nhl-Draft-Works.htm Here are some highlights, with some text emphasized in bold italics:
  3. Stanley Cup Finals are set: Chicago vs. Boston in an Original Six showdown. Looking forward to that matchup. Different styles of hockey should be on display: Boston being a more physical team, while Chicago is more of a skill and speed team. There's a bit more intrigue to the finals this year, since there were no cross-conference games due to the lockout-shortened schedule. That makes it hard to gauge which conference was better, and the teams in the finals are playing against each other for the first time this season. Won't make a prediction, but I'm pulling for my Blackhawks to win.
  4. Gennett looked just as futile as Weeks when trying to bunt. Always thought of 2B being good bunters...and I am proved wrong.
  5. Nats are bringing up Rendon today. They're going to play him some at 2B. But it's a bit of an experiment. Espinosa has been put on DL. (See links.) http://www.baseballnation.com/2013/6/4/4396296/anthony-rendon-nationals-promoted-majors-second-base http://www.federalbaseball.com/2013/6/4/4396306/washington-nationals-reinstate-jayson-werth-recall-anthony-rendon I got to see him this season here in Harrisburg begin to hit AA pitching. Quality looking prospect.
  6. Tim McCarver's leaving the Fox broadcasting booth, which is a good thing. Why would we want Scooter to turn into a terrible color analyst for national baseball broadcasts?
  7. Yes, it's a friendly. And yes, the players from Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich aren't in the squad.... But it's 4-1 USA vs. Germany in the 65th minute down in DC. Never would have thought scoreline was possible. And it finishes 4-3 USA. Nice way to go into a WCQ match at Jamaica.
  8. Didn't see an in-game thread for the June 2 game vs. the Phillies. (Moderators can edit as they see fit.) BREWERS LINEUP Aoki, RF Gomez, C, CF Braun, LF Lucroy, C Betancourt, Y, 3B Gonzalez, Al, 1B Weeks, R, 2B Bianchi, SS Fiers, P PHILLIES LINEUP Revere, B. CF Hernandez, C. 2B Rollins, J. SS Howard, R. 1B Brown, D. LF Mayberry, J. RF Kratz, E. C Galvis, F. 3B Lee, C. P Mike Fiers' day is done before getting out of the 2nd inning. 7 runs given up in 1 2/3 innings, leaving with a runner on 3rd base and two outs. Figaro in for long relief. Disastrous outing for Fiers.
  9. Ugly 9th with a typical K-Rod save. Two wins in a row; I think that's called a winning streak!
  10. "Windmill" Ed Sedar sending Ramirez home on Schafer's double...not sure what he was thinking there.
  11. A win? Can it be so? Nice offensive output and a good job by the bullpen. If Lucroy is breaking out, then having 6 productive hitters in the lineup should bring more runs...and wins.
  12. A merciful way to be put out of one's misery: go down 5-0 in the 1st inning.
  13. "Steroid" chant echoing off 30,000 empty seats. That's classic audio for the Pirates broadcasting vault.
  14. Earl Weaver Baseball: Nothing like matching up the "all star" teams by era from each league. Or drafting your own team to have Sandy Koufax and Walter Johnson as twin barrel closers.
  15. Pays to have played the old Earl Weaver Baseball game on the computer!
  16. Runners on base + hits = runs. Too many times that simple equation isn't fulfilled against STL. Need to turn runners into runs.
  17. Did Yuni have that Mohawk haircut the last time he was with the Brewers? Maybe he has a sort of reverse Samson thing going this year.
  18. Any time I come across "Eight Men Out" on the TV, I end up watching it. Watching "The Natural" is my pre-Opening Day ritual. Kind of a tie between them. Not a best film, but "61*" was good. Probably gets overlooked because it was made for HBO and it wasn't a tour de force like Ken Burns' "Baseball" documentary series.
  19. First legs of the UEFA Champions League semi-finals are finished. Bundesliga vs. La Liga. Surprising to me, the Germans were not just successful, but completely dominant: Bayern Munich 4-0 FC Barcelona Borussia Dortmund 4-1 Real Madrid Looks like an all-German final at Wembley is in the cards. (No singing of "Ten German Bombers", please.) Barca needs a miracle result; Real Madrid needs an improbable one. Both German teams look capable of poaching a lone road goal next week, that would seal the deal.
  20. Nice bit of hitting by Lalli. No overswing; just get the fly ball deep enough, even to the opposite field is enough.
