  1. He made $7.5 million last season, so he would be awarded a minimum of $6 million in arbitration. The Padres had given him a $4 million offer, but withdrew it because they don't want to pay him even that. It'd be pretty surprising if they offered him arbitration after that decision. But if the Brewers hurried out and signed him before the arby deadline, they'd absolutely offer him arby.
  2. IMO we shouldn't be waiting around to find a closer. That is a huge need. There are two HUGE things holding them back, though. Again, CC determines how much money they have to actually spend on one. They're not going to get into a bidding war for someone without knowing how much money they can actually spend. And if they're looking at free agent closers, whether a closer is offered arby or not will probably play a huge role in who the Brewers go after. They have to wait another 2 weeks or so for that deadline to pass.
  3. Melvin doesn't have to wait around to bid on a closer. CC only affects whether or not we trade for a starter. But Melvin does have to wait around to see how much money we actually have available to spend on a closer, and that's directly tied to CC's decision.
  4. Acquiring Lowell would enable the Brewers to move Cameron for other assets. Why? I'm confused as to why acquiring a 3B would allow them to move a CF.
  5. In the immortal words of Barney Gumbel: Tra la la lop a doooo!
  6. Maybe the Royals are not the best judge of talent. A great point that doesn't seem to come up often enough in situations like this. While GM's aren't bound to take absurd, one-sided deals that are often posted on all internet message boards on occasion, I think the flip side is that a lot of people underestimate how many doofuses are in positions of authority in Pro Sports as a whole. I guess I'd rather just keep Cameron for another year and hope a better trade solution (or even Cain improvement) presents itself in a year. I think the whole logic behind a Cameron deal is to improve the team's pitching by getting an arm in return for Cam, and then going out and getting a guy like DeJesus to fill the hole in CF. In a year, Cam isn't under contract with the Brewers, and (hopefully) we won't be in a position where we are looking to use him to fill other holes.

  10. Good old Hal. About the only way the Yankees can get out bid for CC is if they pull their deal because Hal thinks it's good business sense for some reason.
  11. A better option than Hart imo. After 2008, I thoroughly believe this as well. Braun looked good in LF, Hart looked adequate in RF. If one of the two would ever be relied on to play center for some length, I now think it should be Braun (though I'd still prefer it be neither).
  12. I mean, he can't really be "upset" that NY offered $140 million, can he? No, Tom H later clarified that Melvin was kidding with that comment, but ESPN/the national media missed that part (or it didn't make for as good a story).
  13. Being discussed here: http://brewersfandemonium...reply/472031#reply-472031
  14. Yea its real early in the process but we have a lot of gaping holes to fill and all I see is other teams making moves. Yea this looks like the making of a great competitive team next year. It's 6 days into free agency and 2-3 weeks before historically anything major actually takes place. And other teams making moves? So far the only free agent signing with a new team was a middle reliever to the Giants, and the only other free agent move was Dempster re-signing with the Cubs. It's not like stuff is happening left and right and we're sitting idly by.
  15. I like my Pearl (which I unfortunately bought long before this whole 'free' thing http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ) quite a bit- the downside is no full keyboard, so you have to double tap some letters. That's the only real thing it's missing. It's also nice and compact, unlike the Curve, so it doesn't feel like you're holding a laptop to your head when you're making a call and actually fits into your pocket like a normal phone. But the major reason to get a blackberry is e-mail and internet access, which I love having. Though if it's free, I guess it's not necessary. As a warning though, if you decide to go with the 'step down' plan that limits you to like 4 meg per month, be very careful. 4 meg goes REALLY fast- it's like 1/10th of what I use in terms of internet in a month- and I think if you go over, they might hit you with overage charges.
  16. Most big things (trades at least) don't happen until the winter meetings anyway, and those are still nearly 3 weeks away.
  17. As noted in the blog, it seems as if the Brewers and the Yankees are the only bidding teams right now, which is both surprising and really good for the Brewers. Hopefully Doug gets some sort of a feel for what's going to happen today.
  18. I think the simple answer is that the team actually is going to be looking at some type-A FA's (Hoffman, Wood, Cruz, Lowe, etc) to some degree, and they're probably not inclined to make a major rush for any of those players before the arby deadline just in hope that a coupe of them don't get offered. That seems fairly possible if not likely for Hoffman and Wood.
  19. Did former Packer and NFL Hall of Famer Henry Jordan sign his name on ANYTHING in his lifetime? Grr.
  20. Everyone is going to assume that there will be fewer people and this will lead to the same lines. I think there's a real danger of this. Instead of waiting in a huge line to get Braun's auto, now you wait in a huge line to be one of the 250 to get tickets to get Braun's auto....
  21. With the way anything and everything related to Brewers' playoff merchandise flew off the shelves in October, I find it hard to believe that they lost a dime. I think they can do 90 million again without a doubt. If the team performs well early (unlike last year), there's still a ton of room for attendance to grow still.
  22. According to the show, it appears that you can get anywhere in LA in less than 15 minutes. The show's producers have admitted that they have to break reality for the travel stuff, as it just wouldn't work with actual LA traffic timing. Lost shouldn't have made it this far. At least they've got a timeline for ending. Much like the Terminator show I mentioned before, CBS has advertised Eleventh Hour to annoying levels, so again I won't be all that upset if/when it gets cut.
  23. Definitely looking forward to 24 re-starting on Sunday. Fox pushed Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles to nauseating levels, and I'm not disappointed that it's being moved to the precursor-to-cancellation Friday night slot with already low ratings.
  24. Melving ripped the Yankees today on ESPN. He said why offer 140 million when you can just offer 110? He accused them of "overbidding". Already being discussed 8 posts above yours.
  25. So its ESPN's fault for reading a straight MJS story as straight? Melvin declined to respond to that offer but he did make a joke about the Yankees overbidding, which you can read in my story in the JS tomorrow morning.
