  1. While it's great that really at this point CC has only the two offers, one of them for a team he doesn't want to play for and the Brewers, it's not great that this situation is both holding up anything the Brewers do this offseason and also anything from happening seemingly at ALL on the free agent market. What happens if this is still a stalemate going into the Winter Meetings next week? And perhaps more interestingly, what happens if Sheets accepts arby before anything moves with CC? Do the Brewers pull their offer, knowing that they can't give CC 20 mil/per with Sheets likely to get 10-15 million in arbitration? Suddenly Monday rolls around and CC could find himself with only that offer from the team he doesn't want to play for actually on the table.
  2. I think the longer K-Rod stays unemployed, the better the chances the Brewers are going to end up with him. I think the longer he stays unemployed, the easier it's going to be for the Brewers to sweep in and grab one of Hoffman/Wood/Fuentes without much competition.
  3. One thing to throw water on the Dunn fire, hasn't he repeatedly said that he doesn't like hitting in Miller Park? Of course the funny thing is that he always seems to have good success against the Brewers there, but I'm positive he's said that he's not comfortable at the plate in Milwaukee.
  4. Keep in mind that it's not so much giving up on Hart as it is being willing to trade him for the rotation arm that we're going to desperately need in 09 if Sheets isn't back.
  5. Dunn could also make a decent option to replace Fielder at first......
  6. Officially no arby for Wood, per the Cubs' site. I'd prefer Hoffman at this point if he's denied arby as well, but this certainly makes Wood interesting for the time being.
  7. No arby for Howry either. Also, LA reportedly won't offer arby to Joe Beimel, which seems stunning to me.
  8. Abreu makes a ton of sense if we decide to move Hart for pitching or trade Cameron (though Hart in center could be scary).
  9. It's been snowing in the Madison area pretty much since 9am this morning, with a hour gap between 10-11 or so.
  10. Why in the world wouldn't we offer him arbitration: would we be afraid of getting a potentially dominant pitcher on a 1-year deal for maybe $13MM. Oh no, I just couldn't imagine how incredible awful that would be. The elbow injury would have to include serious damage for him to not be worth it. I'd think the only realistic way they wouldn't offer him arby is if the injury would cause him to miss nearly the entire season. The only other way I see it happening (but not so realistic) is if CC does somehow re-sign, and we don't want to risk Sheets accepting and being on the hook for like 35 million between the two.
  11. I think the basic theme of the Sheets news is all the same- everyone knows his potential and ceiling, but all are leery of giving him a long-term deal because of his injuries. I think it's becoming more likely by the day that Sheets is a Brewer in 2009. I think the odds of him accepting arbitration are very high at this point.
  12. Starting to come together Pepper, starting to come together. Beating Michigan after they were coming off a big win vs #1 Minnesota on Friday is especially impressive.
  13. Isn't Hinske a clubhouse cancer? (Maybe I am thinking of someone else though) You might be thinking of Shea Hillenbrand, who was also a 3B for the Jays when Hinske was there and is largely regarded as a jerk.
  14. Its a great year to need a closer. I think it might be a good idea to take advatage of that and get one locked into a multi-year deal this offseason. I agree completely. If Fuentes isn't the best closer on the market, he's almost certainly the best one relative to price. I'd rather pay a little more money to get K-Rod KRod is reportedly looking for something in the 75 million dollar range, so it certainly wouldn't be a little more money.
  15. I think he means that some sites log you on with 'secured' password prompts/entry fields (ie, anything financial online), while others do not (ie, here).
  16. I'm not comfortable with our bullpen as is, but I am less comfortable with our starters and holes in our lineup. That's certainly understandable. But assuming the Brewers don't sign CC or Sheets, where would they spend that 10 million dollars in free agency to address those issues? There are no bats that the Brewers are going to use that kind of money on, and I don't see them making a play at a high-priced starting pitcher either. The one spot in free agency that have players that would provide significant upgrades at is the bullpen, so that should be where they're spending their money. It's hard to believe that the bullpen wasn't the Brewers biggest problem last season, and I don't see how taking one of the best pitchers out of the equation in Torres, and possibly taking another one out in Shouse and replacing them with unproven question marks like Dillard, Swindle, and Stetter does anything to address the team's biggest problem from last year. Yes, there are issues in the rotation and possibly in the lineup as well, but those are almost certainly going to be addressed through trade(s), not by spending 10 million on anyone in free agency.
  17. He's been an inconsistent hitter come the end of the year As were Fielder, Braun, Weeks, and Hart. If inconsistency is the root of your problem with Cameron, you should have problems with most of the other Brewers' players as well.
  18. I count six guys (plus we could always end up putting a starter (Suppan?) there depending on what we do to our rotation) that I have confidence in and we'd roster seven max. Do we really need to spend nine figures per year on a seventh guy to complete the likely bullpen? While your count and roster make-up is likely correct, it leaves out the benefit of how much better a bullpen it could be if you replaced someone like Dillard with someone like Fuentes or KRod.
  19. Wow, that's actually funny and really weird and creepy all at the same time.
  20. 3/30 for Fuentes seems like a reasonable deal, actually. Considering that he's put up very good numbers while playing for the Rockies, I'd be on board with something along those lines.
  21. Swindle would have more long-term potential, but Shouse would have more now-potential. While probably true, the Brewers might view the equation as Swindle+2nd Round Pick+Cost Savings>Shouse.
  22. Melvin's on record saying he's focusing in on other priorities first, namely starting pitching and lefthanded bat. Melvin also has a history of saying one thing in the media and then going out and doing something to contradict what he said, FWIW.
  23. Joel Sherman of Foxsports.com lists the Brewers as the Mets' chief competition in acquiring either KRod or Fuentes: http://msn.foxsports.com/...-Yanks-and-Mets-ambitions
  24. You're kidding me, right. If you followed baseball at all, Starting a post like this violates the rules here about condescending posts.
  25. Was it Tak-a-hit-a Normura? I believe Nomura was the one and only Japanese player the Brewers signed directly from overseas.
