  1. ESPN took Doug's quote and ran with it, completely missing that he was likely joking and also that his name isn't Bob. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3706123
  2. Unfortunately I have a bad feeling Melvin will get desperate and overpay a guy like Garland which will not help this team at all. Sure it would help this team in 2009. The problem is that it might hurt the team in 2010-2012 or so.
  3. NDOG, your argument is based solely on the Brewers' thoughts/rationale. Isn't it feasible that maybe the front office has been given signals from Sheets that he doesn't want to come back, and maybe that's why they're taking a chance on Sabathia? After all, almost all of Sheets interviews between the start of the season and the end clearly reflected that Sheets expected to be moving on.
  4. If Sheets is so great (dependability factored in) then why aren't we hearing about this huge offer to a guy that has been around for 8 years? Why are we only hearing that the Brewers "haven't shut the door to his return? I don't think this is a fair point at all, as the Brewers have made it very clear (especially in Tom H's latest blog) that their priority is CC, and when they get a feel for what is going on with him, they'll turn to Sheets.
  5. As a reminder, please include links to any outside content, please don't just cut and paste. Thanks!
  6. I think this makes it a virtual lock that the Brewers will bite the bullet and go after a type-A free agent. They need arms and will be loaded with comp picks in all likeliness, so this is the year to do it. Heck, if one of Hoffman or Fuentes isn't offered arby for whatever reason, I can see them making a run at them both.
  7. How can he be considered anything other than a highly proven and respectable coaching hire? How can he be considered proven as a pitching coach? He's proven virtually nothing in that role at the major league level, and has very little experience. Is it time for him to get a shot? Probably. But my point was simply that while the Brewers said they were looking for an experienced coach, they then went out and hired a staff that isn't particularly experienced or proven in their roles, and that does include Castro.
  8. Late to the party here, but does anyone else find it strange that Melvin had come out and said that they wanted a manager with experience, then they hire a staff that is largely inexperienced at their current roles? Sveum has never been a hitting coach in the majors, Castro was only a pitching coach for a couple of months 6 years ago, and I don't believe Fischer has ever been a 3B coach either. But still, seems like a solid staff being put together to this point.
  9. no talk about how castro talk with Macha went? Any names on who the bench coach will be When anyone hears something, it'll undoubtedly be posted here.
  10. Do all you guys knocking this deal realize that Melvin had to think long and hard before even excercising Cameron's $10 million dollar option? Do you know this as a fact? For all we know, Melvin was planning on picking up Cam's option from day 1 of the offseason.
  11. http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?cht=t&chs=440x220&chtm=usa&chf=bg,s,336699&chco=d0d0d0,cc0000&chd=s:999999999999999&chld=WIIAILFLGATXTNINWANVPAOHMIOKSD visited 15 states (30%) Create your own visited map of The United States or try another Douwe Osinga project I really don't think I've ever spent a night in Minnesota for some reason.
  12. The papers quoted a cop as saying the celebration was pretty much what he sees every single year on New Years Eve. They routinely set furniture on fire on New Years Eve in Philadelphia?
  13. How can you claim him playing 110 games makes him an inferior hitter I think 'less productive' was the interpretation he was going for.
  14. Randy Johnson will probably go to the Yankees to be their fifth starter....or the Mets. Wasn't it generally thought that Johnson didn't particularly enjoy his time in New York, or am I remembering incorrectly?
  15. on the 93.1 topic, my friends and I were just commenting over the weekend about how all Madison seems to have is classic rock stations with 101.5, 105.9, 105.5, 105.1, 94.9 and the 93.1 so it made sense that one of them finally went away Well, to be fair, only 93.1 and 101.5 were true 'classic rock' stations, as 94.9 is Oldies, 105.5 is progressive rock, and 105.1 plays anything and everything between 1960 and 2008. Even 93.1 and 101.5 were different, with 93.1 focusing more on the Beatles, Doors, Springsteen, etc, while 101.5 has always been more Led, Floyd, and 70's rock (Boston, Cheap Trick, Kansas, etc).
  16. Then he says they are too right-handed of a lineup offensively. And then he goes and picks up Cameron's option. Now what position will have that left-handed bat that he was looking for? What left-handed impact-bat CF'ers are actually available for the Brewers to get?
  17. He's got plenty of milleage on that 28 year old arm. He's averaged about 200 innings the past 6 years. Sabathia also has a 28 year old arm, but has averaged 200 innings over the last 8 years, including an average of 247 the last 2 seasons. If mileage is a concern regarding Peavy, it should also be one with regards to resigning Sabathia as well.
  18. Best of luck to Mike, but at this point I have no problem with the Brewers having someone different in the role as well, as long as that person shares Mike's beliefs about not overworking young pitchers and pitch counts.
  19. I'm pretty sure you simply must offer him arbitration and have him decline - no exact money figure needs to be offered because the arbitration process never begins. Yep, actual numbers aren't exchanged until much later in the process (and normally well after free agency is done).
  20. Of course we did make Cordero a decent offer but botched the negotiation. If by 'botched the negotiation', you mean 'Cordero refused to negotiate.'
  21. Per the JS, Dale Sveum will return to the coaching staff as the Brewers' hitting coach: http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/33695279.html Sedar and Castro officially back as well.
  22. How in the heck is Kerry Wood a type-A free agent? These ratings are just absurd.
  23. Loretta would be a heck of a nice bat coming off the bench, but we really wouldn't want him playing much in the field other than in a pinch at this point in his career.
  24. I'm not sold on Jeffress and have my doubts that he will ever get into the rotation consistantly, in spite of the high rankings on him. So you consider Jeffress a miss because of your own gut feelings? That's not really fair at all, because while your gut feeling causes you to consider it a miss, his high status and success in the minor leagues would cause everyone else to call him a hit so far. Seriously, I would love to see something like that to see really if teams to better than that. You're probably right. I think 50% success ratio on first round picks getting to the big leagues is the benchmark. As it was posted elsewhere in this thread, here's the rest of the NL Central: Cubs: 1 Cards: 0 Pirates: 2 Reds: 1 Astros: 1 So even Jack Z's 4 of 9 success rate with 1st round picks (by your standards of not including Jeffress) blow the rest of the division out of the water.
