  1. I'm against signing any of these scrubs (Fuentes/Bird/Ibanez, etc.). They will all be overpriced. Why overpay for mediocrity? Fuentes has had ERA's of 2.73, 3.08, 3.44, and 2.91 over the last 4 seasons, all of them in Coors. He's nowhere close to being mediocrity and certainly not a scrub. Overpriced, maybe.
  2. Ennder I understand your reasoning but as it turns out the Lee offer was not competitive In the end, you are correct. But no one could even fathom Lee getting 6/100+ when they made their offer in July. The sticking point was a 5th year, as the Brewers had reportedly offered something like 4/48-51 million, but Lee wanted 5/60 or something like that.
  3. My point is that you can't afford to miss on your first round picks five of nine years because that's where your big leaguers come from, and that's what he did. If I had to guess, I'd think it's quite likely that if you actually look around the league, very few teams would be able to surpass that success rate.
  4. I think that the Macha thread was probably an error on our part, as we probably should have closed the rumors/discussion thread off once the official announcement was made. This was an unusual case because normally with player rumors, you have a separate thread in the Rumors forum that would have been closed until the announcement was official. But with it being the manager, this was a different circumstance. Most of the staff would probably agree, though, that we should have gone with a new thread if we had gotten there sooner. We'll probably do it differently when Jack Z's replacement is named for the ensuing discussion as well. And the Cameron thread is a valid point as well, but I believe the existing thread was bumped/added on to by a non-staff poster, and the discussion just kind of continued from there. A separate thread about the merits of his 08 performance and whether to pick up the option was probably warranted there as well.
  5. How much interest do others here have in watching non-Brewers baseball games given from what i remember hearing tonight that ratings were bad again for the World Series? I've never really been able to watch non-Brewers baseball, so last night was the first post season game I watched at length since the Brewers were eliminated. I've always had the same problem with non-Packer football, though I can usually at least keep those games on in the background. This year for the first time I haven't really been able to watch non-Badgers college football, though. Last year I could take a Saturday and watch games from 11:00 am - 11:00 pm without thinking twice, not this year though.
  6. Unspectacular on the surface, but these are the Melvin moves that seem to end up flying under the radar and working out really well (Kapler, Davis, Podsednick, Kolb, Turnbow, etc).
  7. So 6 hours after the extensions for Maddux, Castro, Sveum, and Sedar is reported by Tom H on the D-list, there's still no story on the JS website or even in Tom's Blog? I mean, Tom does lag behind some news on occasion, but this doesn't make any sense.
  8. The express is the way to go, IMO. I renewed my license a couple of months ago and was in and out in 30 mins. Would have been faster if many of the people in line in front of me weren't there for things they couldn't do at that location.....
  9. I wouldn't send a No. 2-type starter plus for just one season of Holliday. Especially since the Brewers are likely to be looking to acquire the same no. 2-type starter this offseason as well. Really, and deal the Brewers make this offseason for a bat in trade probably has to bring an arm back as well. Considering that the Rockies need an arm like the Brewers do, they're probably not a good fit at all.
  10. Don't trade Braun Gallardo My list is pretty similar. Though I think that most of the Brewers' pitching in the majors is untradeable this offseason (save for Suppan, who is probably untradeable for a completely different reason), or at least until they get the staff sorted out a bit. They're not really in a position to move Bush, Parra, Villy, etc until things are settled. Obviously, if the Cardinals lose their mind and offer us Pujols for Parra and Hart, you make the deal, but otherwise I can't see making any of our arms available, as we don't have a heck of a lot of quantity in or near the majors, or in the organization as a whole.
  11. Salome has huge upside offensively as a catcher in the bigs, but he'd be average at best at third in the majors. They'll keep him at catcher as long as possible, and if that doesn't work out, package him in a trade to an AL team, I'd think.
  12. Ok you can go ahead and disprove my post but I've always felt that Corey is an average defender, slightly above average at best. I agree completely. I'm somewhat surprised that there are still so many suggestions for moving Corey to CF after a very mediocre year defensively in right. Sure, he can handle it in a pinch or for a DL stint or something like that, but I sure as heck don't want him out there for 150+ games. And yes, the downgrade from Cameron to him would be colossal.
  13. And one big positive is none of them are named Ned Yost. While literally you are correct, Randolph is essentially Ned Yost's twin in the dugout, and Brenly might actually be a tactical step down that make us yearn for the days of Ned and Dale. Macha or bust, IMO, unless Doug pulls a rabbit out of his hat at this point.
  14. Brewers.com confirms that Melvin is done with interviews, and it will be one of Macha, Brenly, or Randolph: http://milwaukee.brewers....ws_mil&fext=.jsp&c_id=mil
  15. Are you saying that he wouldn't be a good manager because of this, or that he isn't in consideration because Attanasio wouldn't hire him because of this, or something else? I think you're reading his post the wrong way. He's (IMO) saying that Johnson wasn't fired due to lack of success (making him a "retread" manager like the rest), but because he had issues with crazy owners. He meant it as a plus, not a negative.
  16. I think we all knew this was just a matter of time. Heck, we probably should be grateful that the Pirates passed over him last year and gave us one more draft with a lot of high picks.
  17. I went home sick from work today, missing my first day of school or work due to illness since 1994 or 1995.
  18. "Willie Randolph is expected to be among the leading candidates for the Brewers' managerial vacancy." The article basically states he's a candidate but does not go into depth, etc. Per MLB rules, aren't the Brewers required to interview a candidate for the job that is a member of a minority group? Not saying that it's the only reason he's being brought up, just mentioning the possibility.
  19. Was I the only one who saw this headline today and was stunned that Zima was still being made as it was?
  20. Per the JS, Macha has officially been interviewed: http://blogs.jsonline.com...has-been-interviewed.aspx Tom H also feels that Brenly has been interviewed as well, but again that's just his opinion.
  21. Sportswriters are idiots. So are a surprising number of GM's.
  22. Public relations is why people hated Yost so much and little did they realize that it doesn't mean jack. I don't think public relations had much to do with why Yost was so hated at all. They hated his bullpen management and often dumbfounding in-game strategy/decisions. His public relations issues just compounded the problem.
  23. kind of out of left field but what about doing some prospects. I'm fairly sure that they couldn't do something like that until they've played in a major league game first due to MLBPA rules. So that would be possible for guys like Salome or Escobar, but not for someone like Jeffress, Lawrie, etc.
  24. Allow me to add myself to the Davey Johnson list. Of those mentioned, Johnson and Valentine are the only ones that interest me at all, and I'd be happy with either one.
  25. The article says they have new procedures and policies in place so, no, I don't think your last sentence is the case. Well, the new policies seem to be 'seat people randomly on the buses', which seems a fairly minor concession considering they're less than a week from 'suspended indefinitely from traveling'.
