  1. I would kind of disagree about the respect thing. People love Suter. I mean not everyone does, but the people who do, really love the guy. If anyone doesn't get respect I would say it's Guerra. You could probably make a good argument for him being our best starter, and yet on several occasions I've seen people refer to Chacin and Suter...with no mention of Junior.
  2. Julio is a braver man than I if he wants to resume his baseball career. I'd be done. Just awesome that he's alive and well. I remember him being on life support for several weeks and assuming there was little hope.
  3. Valuing guys based on our needs and our surplus areas is a terrible way of doing business. That's fine if they hang up. Don't really care, and wouldn't adjust my offer based on what others would pay. I also don't think you're properly discounting rentals, especially a rental that isn't particularly cheap.
  4. Yeah, I mean you don't want to give away the farm on your first offer, I'll agree with that, but you do want to make a competitive offer if you even want them to deal with you. I'd agree opening with Hiura, Burnes and Peralta would be a bad first offer, unless you wanted to present it as a 'take it or leave it, I'll give you X amount of time and if no then we're done" offer. But starting out offering Woodruff + Phillips would just be laughably bad and not worth their time.
  5. Too much. Selling way low on Woodruff and Santana, and we end up adding an extra $7M to our payroll. I wouldn't give up much more than someone like Cody Ponce.
  6. I would do Sogard for Machado. That seems like a solid deal for us.
  7. I just don't think it wise to rely on two rookies, one with zero MLB experience, one with 2 very good MLB starts (and 1 not-so-good), and a guy that isn't really throwing yet. I think the depth is somewhat smoke-and-mirrors. Anderson is pitching worse than last year, Davies has been hurt/ineffective, and we're lucky if we're getting QS out of the likes of Woodruff/Peralta/Suter/insert name here. Chacin and the re-emergence of Guerra have been bright spots in an otherwise fairly dismal rotation so far this year. They're doing enough to win, which has largely been a product of the bullpen eating 3-4 innings every single night, which has worked well so far, but that HAS to start catching up to them. I don't think we have the luxury to let a guy like Burnes adjust to the majors in the middle of a playoff race. I should clarify -- I think between Nelson, Peralta, and Burnes, our options are likely in-house long-term -- not necessarily this season. I'm ok with selling off decent prospects that are potentially part of the roster crunch anyway, for upgrades anywhere, not necessarily starters. I don't think it would be wise to sell off major assets because of not wanting to count on Peralta, Nelson, and Burnes for postseason 2018. We're not as good as the Cubs are yet, and someone like Happ doesn't change that. This could be a wild card team, but I'd rather roll with who we got and see what happens rather than invest significantly in a 1 game playoff. If you want to sell off guys out of roster crunch guys to give us a little better shot this year, sure. But this team should still be looking at the big picture.
  8. I still think the need for starting pitching on this team is overblown. The organizational depth at SP is already extremely strong. I know you can't guarantee production from Nelson this year, but between Nelson, Peralta, and Burnes, our answers are likely already in-house. So it doesn't make a lot of sense to me to give up valuable trade assets just to add more depth. Maybe if you can get a rental like Happ for little, I could get behind it but I'm guessing the bidding will take him beyond a top 15-20 organizational prospect type, and topping that plus taking on his salary isn't worth it to me when you have numerous in house options. Failing all that, of course it's always worth adding an ace type like Syndergaard or DeGrom if you can get a good deal, but you don't get guys like that on a good deal.
  9. Arcia is kind of in the same boat. If you're going to call up Miller, which they should, playing Arcia sparingly here doesn't make much sense. Let him work on things in AAA.
  10. I took it a lot more as he won't be optioned right now -- subject to change.
  11. Then who do you trade? To get any of the big guns, they are going to have to pay up. Not gonna get a stud pitcher, catcher or infielder without giving up some of our top prospects. Don't think they'll go after big guns, but I could easily see them trading guys like Diplan, Lara, Gatewood, Supak, Ortiz, Stokes, Ponce...any of the potential Rule 5 guys are definitely at high risk of being traded. (I know Diplan is already on the 40). I mean heck we likely could have had Kelvin Herrera for a few of those names without giving up studs.
  12. Thames is playing RF in Pittsburgh because LF has so much room to cover. He'll play LF in Miller Park. If he can handle RF I'd imagine he'll play it at Miller Park too, given how much better of a defender Yelich is in LF than RF.
  13. They got 4 at Pittsburgh right before the AS break. Think they'll try to squeeze a doubleheader in there somewhere.
  14. Good. They’ll be somewhat rested for tomorrow’s St. Louis game. They could be at home in Milwaukee by now if Pittsburgh played their getaway games at 1 like everyone else.
  15. Should be fun to play this game on a crap field, fly from Pittsburgh to Milwaukee, lose an hour on the flight, then play another game at Miller Park, all within the next 24 hours. Thanks for not doing getaway games during the day like pretty much every other team in baseball, Pirates.
  16. Maybe. You're getting Realmuto without having to give up (arguably) our two top prospects, Hiura and Peralta. Hard to argue with that, and Castro fills a need too. I agree with Plush that you'd ideally like to substitute in some lower level talent for some of the AA level talent. Maybe see if you can substitute in Diplan and Lutz for Grisham and Woodruff.
  17. Counsell was quoted recently saying that with Logan being DFA'd, they would likely call up another reliever soon. The DFA opens a spot on the 40-man as well. I wonder if Burnes to Milwaukee is imminent? Makes logical sense. Miley and Nelson are too far away from coming off the 60 for them to just leave that spot open for that long.
  18. No. We're having a hard enough time scoring runs without replacing Aguilar and Thames with Bell. Wouldn't make much sense for a team with hopes of contending.
  19. The only reason the Mets are even opening the door a crack on Syndergaard or DeGrom is because they have nothing to lose by seeing if someone will absolutely blow them away with an offer they can't refuse. That's what they are waiting on, they're not just prepared to take the top bid. I would put a much higher chance on them trading someone like Wheeler. Syndergaard, basically 0-2%. DeGrom, maybe 15-20% and if it happens we'll be saying wow, what a haul.
  20. Corey lucky Mercer was taking all the way first pitch. Couldn't have served up a more meat fastball.
  21. Not even mad at the pen. Mad at an offense that can't do any little things right and craps on the field every night if they don't get production out of the same 4-5 guys on a daily basis.
