Just after killing all the autoupdates process/services, we dropped it down to 70 and it was running about 50 times quicker. This might be the obvious answer, but I've got to ask. First, Vista is slow. Second, how much RAM does the computer have? I know of a desktop that was sold from Gateway with Vista already installed. The person complained it was slow and wanted to get a new, faster computer. I checked and found there was 512 MB of RAM on it. That's just enough to run Vista, if you aren't planning on running anything else like antivirus or a web browser. For $50 I got them 4GB (8 times the amount) of RAM and it was like a new computer.
