  1. It depends what exactly you're trying to represent... Showing all the data for the entire league, you'd end up with some sort of a bell curve... the terrible and the great being few, and the masses being between .700 and .850 OPS. As for player value, using something like WAR, it would actually be linear. Every WAR is worth approximately the same so a 6 WAR player is worth 6x as much as a 1 WAR player.
  2. With 5 guys to play 3 spots (Counsell, McGeehee, Gamel, Escobar, Weeks) I don't see the good in bringing back a 6th guy coming off a career year, who has a .338 career obp. He's been unbelievable as a Brewer, but the odds of him keeping up that pace next year are roughly one in CC Sabathia.
  3. JJ had a highlight in 2009? Anyway... personal highlights, moments I won't forget: Cameron's ridiculous catch, Prince's HR Derby championship, Reed Johnson robbing Prince of a grand slam, Yovani hitting a solo HR and single handedly beating the Pirates 1-0. Catalanatto playing 2B... Gerut's grand slam... Prince's grand slam... Hells Bells. There's many more... but that's off the top of my head.
  4. Maybe, just maybe... if I can convince some of my friends to read this article: http://www.sabernomics.com/sabernomics/index.php/2004/12/on-the-productive-out-percentage/ Teams that make productive outs don't score more runs.
  5. 3 blown saves and heartbreaking losses this post season already! Amazing.
  6. Mat Gamel.
  7. Personally, I love BA. Its amazing how much better he sounds with a competent partner in the booth. Last year the way he played off of Smoltz was pretty amazing. I'll never understand complaints about BA when there's the other brutal announcers, like Chip Caray out there. At least BA will get the players names right in the game he's doing.
  8. If you sum the WAR for a teams players, which is determined independently of their record (without factoring in wins and losses at all) it predicts, fairly well, their record for the season. Its not as though they took the teams wins, then divided them up amongst the players. So, going forward, if you *can* use WAR and WAR predictions to correlate to a teams record the next year.
  9. Yes, clearly the Rays problem this year was a lack of groundballs to 2b with a guy on 2nd and no one out. Just like the Brewers!
  10. http://awfulannouncing.blogspot.com/2009/10/your-full-yet-conditional-mlb.html They must've liked him enough last year to give him another gig. Way to go BA. We're fortunate to have one of the best.
  11. Fielder leads the league in RBI's, Braun leads it in hits. Hoffman finishes 3rd in saves, despite missing a month.
  12. Its not the players who are the problem with competitive balance. Its the lack of revenue sharing for media contracts. The owners locking out the players would not make the Steinbrenners give the Pirates any more money.
  13. The only reason I'd want them to be in Chicago, is the fact that some sort of mass transit would have to be built between Chicago and Milwaukee. I travel down there quite a bit, and not having to drive it would be... amazing.
  14. Good for Joe Mauer. Paul Molitor was one of the best ever at this. I don't understand what the hubub is about. Its not like they were using a video camera in CF.
  15. Lopez is having a career year. He has a .338 career OBP, a 3 year split of .308 (!!), .343 and .381 this year. Signing him to the deal he would require (3 years, 30 million probably, maybe 4 years, 28 million) means no Cameron next year. I'd rather keep Cam and have him leading off next year.
  16. Right now the team has 2 guys who can play 3b (Gamel, McGeehee), and 2 who can play 2b (Weeks, McGeehee) under contract next year. I don't think spending money on Lopez is a wise move... let alone moving Weeks to CF after how poorly the "Bill Hall experiment" went in CF.
  17. 2500 posts in this thread! Amazing. I don't understand why Sonic puts real fruit in their drinks.... I just don't like having a strawberry stuck at the bottom of my straw when I'm driving!
  18. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/how-are-the-stars-being-acquired-starting-pitching/ Long story short, the top 30, by xFIP: Javier Vazquez - trade Tim Lincecum - draft Dan Haren - trade Roy Halladay - draft Zack Greinke - draft Jon Lester - draft Josh Johnson - draft Justin Verlander - draft Ricky Nolasco - trade Adam Wainwright - draft Chris Carpenter - free agent Felix Hernandez - amateur free agent Josh Beckett - trade Joel Pineiro - trade Ubaldo Jimenez - amateur free agent Cole Hamels - draft Wandy Rodriguez - amateur free agent Yovani Gallardo - drafted Gavin Floyd - trade Brett Anderson - trade Jorge de la Rosa - trade Jason Hammel - trade CC Sabathia - free agent Ryan Dempster - free agent Roy Oswalt - draft Aaron Harang - trade Max Scherzer - draft Chad Billingsley - draft Joe Blanton - trade Clayton Kershaw - draft That works out to 11 pitchers acquired via trade, 13 in the draft, 3 as amateur free agents (read: intentional in this case), and 3 as actual free agents.
  19. He's very similar to Chad Bradford, actually, his FB tops out mid 80's.
  20. 5.5 million for depth in the rotation next year? Even if we make a trade? Yes, please.
  21. I don't know that he's much of a long shot. He could very well be up next year, and someone will pick him up if the Royals don't put him on their 40-man roster. The "He only throws 80" argument shouldn't hold with him as his delivery is crazy and his breaking stuff is nasty.
  22. Actually, post pattern comes from the days when the goalposts were still on the field of play, and the receiver would use them to brush off the defender.
  23. The police department can get a subpoena and then compel AT&T to give you the user and location of where that person logged in from at that specific time and date. You won't be able to access that yourself.
  24. The ticket sales hit is already going to happen next year. Even if they do contend, I doubt the Brewers will draw 3 million fans again next year. After a season like this one, early season sales are bound to be way down. So trading Prince to retool for 2011-2015 instead of feebly attempting to reload the musket for 2010 is the way to go. If they think they can compete in 2010, they don't trade Prince. His value for contract dollar is enormous.
