  3. Luke, you and I will have to disagree on whether they were put in a spot to succeed at the start. I thought they were an 85-86 win team this year, which was more than good enough to compete in the division. I couldn't have predicted both Suppan and Bush getting hurt and Parra pitching like Jose Lima, though.
  4. So, what was everyone saying on the 4th of July when the Brewers were 5 games over .500 and in first place? How was the "mediocre" rotation treating the team then? Had Melvin not put together a winner? They went into the season knowing that if more than 1 starting pitcher got hurt -- they had McClung as a 6th starter -- they were going to have a tough time of it. Am I happy with an under .500 season? No, I'm not... but in their "World Series" run how many injuries to starting pitchers did the Rays have to deal with? 3 of them being out for more than a month each? Their two super durable 200 innings a year pitchers included. Their #3 starting pitcher having the worst season by a full time starter in MLB? No, don't think they had that either. "It happens." And it happened to the Brewers this year. The team is still hovering around .500 and if the Cardinals weren't playing out of their minds the Brewers would be right in a divisional race in September.
  5. I don't think its been said... but... if it has, I apologize... Edit: I just want to make sure it wasn't Van Halen...
  6. Except you're wrong. Kazmir wasn't on the market 4 weeks ago. At least not for the Brewers. 4 weeks ago he was going to be part of a deal for Cliff Lee or Roy Halladay. Who could the Brewers have sent to the Rays?
  7. They had the pitching to get there. They were in first place on the 4th of July with the easiest schedule in baseball coming up the 6 weeks after the all star break. What they didn't have was the extra pitching to live through 3 starting pitchers getting hurt, going through 18 different bullpen arms and Manny Parra being absolutely horrendous.
  8. I'd go with... "My eyes don't pop nearly as well without the blue cap."
  9. Ridnour has to go, right? He's got by far the least potential out of any of our PG's and his salary is the most disproportionate....
  10. I have this irrational hate for Jerry Garcia and his grill tips (Not Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead). I'm not sure what bothers me more: Him, or the fact that he annoys me so.
  11. Lets see that list. He's 4th in MLB in WAR amongst CF's, and he's 4th in OPS. 3rd in BB%. 8th in OBP, behind 3 guys who platoon. The guy is a steal for 10 million.
  12. Anyone know if there's any truth to the rumor's that once again, the team asked Hardy to slide over to 3b and he told them to pound sand, so they sent him down?
  13. I was there, but don't think I have my ticket any longer, sadly. Escobar's first hit, right?
  14. It's amazing how long good speakers will last. Up until a couple years ago, I was using speakers about that old as well... which my parents had given me when I was a kid.
  15. I would've loved to see Babe Ruth pitch a game -- he was almost as great a pitcher as he was a hitter. See Tris Speaker patrolling centerfield. See Josh Gibson call a game and hit a mammoth shot.
  16. So, I want to recap, to make sure I have the "Fire Doug Melvin" side of the equation correct... All credit for the young guys who are good goes to Jack Z. All credit for the lack of young pitching goes to Doug Melvin Every guy who underproduces, gets hurt, or otherwise doesn't live up to his contract: Doug Melvin's fault, and the guy should've been traded sooner. Every guy who has a great year for the team and over produces his contract was pure luck That about right?
  17. There's still no better place, for me, on a beautiful summer day, than to be sitting in the lot, sipping a 'brew, grilling up some food and having good conversation with family and/or friends, knowing we've got the shot that night to see Alcides make a play, or see Prince hit one off the scoreboard. I may be disappointed in the season, but that's no reason to keep me from enjoying Brewers baseball.
  18. They were in first place halfway through the season... 43-38 on the 4th of July... with their staff intact. With Hall, Parra and Hardy all underperforming to the extreme. When guys started getting hurt is when everything unraveled.
  19. Jeff Sackmann revisited Hall's initial deal over at THT. I pretty much agree with him, the deal was a total no-brainer at the time, considering Hall's age, and how many different positions he could play. It would've been impossible to predict that his bat would completely disappear.
  20. Sheets made him look pretty foolish a few times too. Pujols was one of the few guys Ben would save his changeup for.
  21. He already should've won at least 1 MVP. I'd say if you were picking a guy for this season, he'd go second, behind Pujols. With Hanley Ramirez a close third.
  22. Every preseason prediction I saw had the Cubs winning the division and winning 92+ games. If they miss the playoffs, they will be a huge disappointment. Same with the Red Sox.
  23. I was up near the Twin Cities over the weekend, and Saturday night, it monsooned on us for about an hour. Went from sprinkles to torrential downpour. Crazy weather. Too bad I was camping!
  24. His ERA is 5.03, he was the #5 starter coming into the year.Parra's is 6.44, he was the #2 or #3 starter coming into the year. I don't think Looper is the problem.
  25. Well, the Brewers were in first place before they lost 3 starters to ineffectiveness and injuries. Its not Bush, Looper and Suppan that are the problem, its 2 of the 3 of them getting hurt, and Parra getting much worse. Manny Parra has an ERA 2 runs higher and has pitched below replacement level. He was supposed to be our #2 or #3 starter... and he's been the worst pitcher on the staff. Clearly, we should've traded HIM in the offseason too. The only deal I heard about for young power arms in the off season was Fielder for Cain, and even then it was thought that SF would want more than just Prince. Hart or Hardy were not going to get Matt Cain or Zach Grinke so can we just drop those thoughts? The pitching staff hasn't just underperformed, its gotten injured, and its been terrible. Can you really blame that on Doug Melvin? When 2 guys who have never really gotten hurt in their careers both go down for over a month? As for Looper, he's pitched about where I expected him to, his ERA is 5.03 right now, the only thing that's disturbing is his HR's given up. Suppan's ERA is 5.23, it was down to 4.43 before he pitched 2 games while he was hurt and gave up 15 runs in 8 2/3. If you want to fault Melvin, that's fine, but in reality, the team has been hugely unlucky with their pitching staff this year, and this team cannot afford to carry 7 or 8 starting pitchers like the Red Sox can.
