  1. Since it's the NY Post reporting it and that happens to be a rag with very little credibility I will wait and see. ESPN has not reported this as a complete deal yet and I want to see there be some sort of announcement before I believe a paper that is best known for tabloid journalism. Rp
  2. $10 million dollars, which is a ton of money.A ton of money or one Eric Gagne losing you games from the pen. ;-) Rp
  3. I would think what we could do is trade Prince and Suppan to the Giants for Cain and Taschner and then sign Dunn for 4 years $40-44 million. This quote from Buster Olney's article sort of gives me hope that we could get Dunn for that much: http://sports.espn.go.com...094&name=olney_buster Rp
  4. So much for that Sean Burroughs, Khalil Greene left side of the infield tandem.... I remember how San Diego was so high on both guys as if they were going to be the cornerstone of that club. I think they had similar feelings for Xavier Nady but as it turns out they weren't patient enough to wait for him to develop. Rp
  5. As terrific as Option C sounds, I can't see the Yankees taking on nearly $30 million of Suppan's salary for Mike Cameron. I think we're stuck with him no matter what. This is why I hate backloaded contracts. Older veterans are almost always worse in the last few years of their deals than the first few years. I'd prefer that if we're going to shift money, frontload the contract. Then by years #3 or 4 it's much easier to dump the player if they perform as badly as Suppan has. Rp
  6. In fairness no Middle Inning Reliever will ever have any "automatic" stats because there really aren't any in the Hall. Which is sort of a shame because teams don't win without them. Rp
  7. I think Plesac's career actually makes a good argument and test trial to see what qualifications a long term middle inning reliever has to have to get elected to the Hall. Look, just because you accumulate Saves which is far easier these days with Closers rarely going past an inning or seeing action in games where saves aren't available for accumulation doesn't mean there are not some lockdown middle inning relievers or even set up men that deserve a look. If not Plesac, who? Orosco based on longevity alone? Rp
  8. I guess I'm okay with the signing mostly because there's really no alternatives out there but I still think his price tag seems a bit hefty. Either way I'm fine with him being our CF for next year. I just hope there's not a major regression or injury in store for him. Now Russ, can you tell me what formula you came up with to determine that 100Ks equals only one negative run? I have a hard time believing that 100 outs would somehow equate to just one run. I would appreciate it if you expound upon this a bit for me (unless I might have missed it somewhere else in this thread). Thanks.
  9. I don't think his value will be in the $7 million/year range as suggested above. I think at $4-5 million for two years, even if he flames out he's not nearly the risk that Gagne was (since everyone saw Gagne falling apart in the second half of 2007 in Boston). We need an actual closer though this year so that Torres can be more useful eating other innings up, so unless he's ready to go by spring training I wouldn't want him. Rp
  10. Not happening. A lot of Boston fans, myself included, think Lester's probably the ace of that staff now. No way does he go anywhere. I don't see this trade having any teeth. As mentioned above Boston has Lowell, Youk and Ortiz and I think the consensus is that once Ortiz's wrist heals up and Lowell's hip labrum heals up... both of which should be by Spring Training, that both will be very productive in 2009. Also I'm not sure management has at all given up on Buchholz being in that rotation sometime early next year. Rp
  11. I think this idea would go over like a lead balloon. See the reaction to when the Astros had to play the Cubs here? Multiply the negativity by 1 Million. I think the best answer is to shorten the regular season. I think Peter Gammons made a pretty good case for shortening the season to 148. The Steroids era pretty much diminished the value of records and there's a lot of negative weather factors that play into teams with open air stadiums, especially that late into the year. Rp
  12. Wait so Philadelphia is not a huge market?
  13. I agree with this although I haven't seen Davey's name legitimately floated by anyone reporting on this. Johnson's teams had a toughness and a swagger to them that the Brewers could use. I think he would bring a different attitude to the team and frankly he has a track record of winning everywhere he's been. I really don't like anyone on the list. Macha has issues with respect in his clubhouse, Brenly makes some boneheaded in game decisions, Narron has never won anywhere, Showalter's teams always seem to get better once he is gone, Randolph's team quit on him and I've read that he was a poor communicator in the dugout (wish I could remember the source). Davey Johnson is preferable to any of those guys and is better than a high percentage of current MLB managers. Rp
  14. Personally I assume both walk but I don't think we compete for anything next year unless we upgrade big time at SP. I like Yo and Parra but I don't know that either is ready to be top of the rotation guys. Bush is streaky and Suppan is flat out awful. I also don't see anyone on the market we can compete for financially that will be a gamechanger top of the rotation guy. Also unless Gamel is able to duplicate the not so common immediate success of Ryan Braun, trading Prince is going to leave a huge hole in our offense for next year. Rp
  15. Considering they will probably be counted on as two-thirds of the top of our rotation I would hope both can go 200 innings. If we're not getting 200 IP out of any of our first two or three starters we might as well forget contending next season. Rp
  16. Don't sweat it. Even though I love the Brewers, have been a season ticket holder and everything, the first baseball team I truly watched was the '86 Red Sox and I have been a Sox fan ever since. I consider the Brewers my NL team I suppose. Although I have said if the Brewers and Red Sox made the World Series I would probably want the Brewers to win just because the likelyhood of them doing this as often as Boston can with its' payroll capabilities are much slimmer. Here's my list (this is supposed to be teams other than the Brewers): 1. Red Sox 2. Rays 3. Dodgers (a number of former Sox I still like) 4. Phillies 5. Angels 6. White Sox 7. Cubs.... I hope they get swept first round. I hate their fans almost as much as Yankees fans. Rp

  21. My personal opinion is small ball should have been employed way more often then it was under Yost. I don't think there's any time when we should be resorting primarily to small ball but there are times where playing for a tying or go ahead run makes more sense than letting Counsell or Cameron or Bill Hall hack away. Sure the last two guys have power but more times than not they're likely to strike out and then you got nothing out of their PA anyway. I tend to believe that if you have guys who don't have colossal power, have 0-1 outs with a runner on second or third and are down a run or two, that playing for a run is smarter baseball than having guys who are barely average hitters swinging away. I don't believe it makes sense to have Prince or Braun bunt at any time unless it's a game winning squeeze type of play where the whole thing would surprise and throw off an opposing team not playing for the bunt defensively. Rp
  22. 1. Hart 2. Braun 3. CC 4. Prince 5. Sheets
  23. Moss was a decent prospect but where were they going to play him? With Drew locked into a big deal in RF, Bay now out there in LF and Ellsbury being a long term player in CF they weren't going to put Moss out there anytime soon (especially when you consider Ortiz has the DH spot locked up). Plus Moss doesn't project to have the same kind of production that Bay would provide.
  24. We can't complain about "Wrigley North" until Brewers fans stop selling their tickets (at least to Cubs fans). The problem is most season ticket holders see these games on the schedule every year as a chance to profit from idiot Cubs fans and usually they're right. However it looks absolutely horrible on TV, in person, probably even to Brewers players when you hear "Let's Go Cubbies" chants that fill the stadium and standing ovations for when the Cubs get hits and runs. That part is truly sickening. Rp
  25. I don't know why, considering how we are always talking about being a small market team, we don't just axe Bill and Brian and use Powell and Uecker on a simulcast? Wouldn't that be cheaper (and way better)?
