This is a clear indication that Melvin is not that high on Capellan. If the guy would throw the gas he was advertised with there would be no way we would trade him. Give us Chris Nelson.

I'd be very happy with Jeff Baker as a return. Especially as someone that could backup Fielder instead of Counsell.

I remember when we got Capellan from the Braves. Some of us were wondering why Atlanta was willing to trade him. Maybe they knew something.

I like Baker, but he's now out of options. I like our pitching depth, and hate to lose any of it. I'd want a AAA arm with some upside for Jose. If there isn't one available as good as Jose (which I doubt), maybe add a solid AAA SS/2B as well. Our depth in that area is only the vets in the bigs.

if I remember right AJAY I think it was because they were upset that he couldn't develop another pitch. He can throw a decent fastball and an average slider, but nothing else, I thought that is what I read at somepoint, but I could be wrong...

I remember when we got Capellan from the Braves. Some of us were wondering why Atlanta was willing to trade him. Maybe they knew something.

 

They usually do seem to know something when they trade someone. I can't count how many highly regarded prospects they have traded in the past 5 years who have never been heard from again.

Jason Schmidt is probably the only Braves pitching prospect that they gave up on too soon. David Neid (Rockies-expansion draft) and Bruce Chen are a couple of others that come to mind (although Chen has been decent in recent years, but not someone they're losing sleep over losing).

 

Capellan for either Jeff Baker, who couldn't be any more blocked, or Chris Nelson, who could use a change of scenery, makes a ton of sense for the Brewers. I'm guessing Melvin would prefer Baker since he's one of those guys on the verge of contributing at the MLB level.

I remember meyer. I think at the time we got Capellan, many of us wanted meyer. he was supposed to be a great pitcher. what ever happened to him?

 

as for colorado, they have a couple of extra catchers and infielders. Toreabela and barnes are probably looking for new homes, and Colorado is trying to find one for them. Somehow i doubt Colorado gives the brewers a pitcher in return for Capellan.

He's been hurt the whole time. As I recall, he hid an injury and made it worse, and didn't pitch much in '06 (with a 5.07 ERA). I'm not sure what his status is this year.

Edit: upon searching, it looks like he has recovered from surgery last year and has been optioned to AAA.

I think Barmes is a logical guy to get in return. Pretty much the same situation as Capellan.

 

I really want to keep Jose - maybe he just needs to find that hunger again. Maybe a 30.00 food allowance will make him develop a 3rd pitch.

 

I dont think Jiminez is available at all - I think he is one of the better arms in the minors.

If Melvin does deal Capellan (and I don't think he will), I don't think we should expect too much. Capellan hasn't done that much, and as a basis for comparison the Jays traded Francisco Rosario to the Phillies for $100k. Granted Rosario's out of options, but he's a decent prospect and like Capellan, he's only 26. I think we could do better than that, but there is a big distance between "cash considerations" and "legitimate prospect."

As the industry-wide search for bullpen help continues, the Giants, Rockies, Devil Rays and Nationals have expressed interest in trading for Brewers Class AAA right-hander Jose Capellan, FOXSports.com has learned.

 

Capellan, 26, requested a trade after getting demoted by the Brewers at the end of spring training. He is a strike thrower with a good delivery, and should bring the Brewers more than the $100,000 the Blue Jays obtained from the Phillies for right-hander Francisco Rosario.

 

That is, if the Brewers make a move.

 

The Brewers' bullpen is deeper than it was last season; right-handers Francisco Cordero, Carlos Villanueva, Greg Aquino and Elmer Dessens were not with the club at this point a year ago. However, the Brewers would rather keep Capellan than accept an inferior return.

 

The Nationals might want to use Capellan to help their beleagured rotation; he has started in the past. The Rockies, Devil Rays and Giants are seeking to increase their bullpen options.

If you look at how bad some of these bullpen situations are around baseball it is clear to me that we can expect a solid return for capellan if we move him. Personally I think we need to hold on to him because sooner or later we will probably need him.
