Yeah, they seem to be. They shed a bunch of payroll last season (trading Peavy, etc) and seem intent on slashing further. They're in total rebuild mode at this point after their ownership change.

I don't think it will come down to him being non-tendered, he's got to have enough value to get at least some talent for him. I would give up a few mid-level prospects for him.

I'd give up a mid-level for Correia too. These are the kind of guys that they are going to have to go after if this Wolf deal falls through.

wasn't there alot of talk about him at the deadline last season? wouldn't be a bad pick up for mid level prospects or maybe even just cash.

This would be an outstanding move for us, depending on the cost. IIRC, weren't we linked to him quite a bit near the deadline last July?

Wouldn't the smart move be to try and trade for him before he is non-tendered? I would think the only thing holding the Brewers would be if the Padres simply want too much for him. He should be relatively affordable.

Correia would be a nice pickup. If the Pads are mainly looking to cut costs, would it take much more than an offer of, say, Dillard+Iribarren? I'd actually like to see the Hurricane on the 25-man in 2010, but I'd rather have Correia.

I agree, we should offer SOMETHING in trade before he is free to sign with anyone. He'd be a lot cheaper than Doug Davis and possibly as effective.

MLBTR has talk from Buster Olney that rival execs say it should just take second tier prospects to get Correia or Kouzmanoff. So yeah, maybe Dillard and Irribarren or something like that could get it done.

If that's true, there's really no reason Melvin couldn't bring him in. I hope he does.

Yeah, I would do something like Dillard and Hernan for Correia in a heartbeat. Gallardo/Wolf/Correia/Bush/Parra would be pretty solid, imo.

From what I can find online, Correia stands to make around $3M in arbitration. Please get this done, Mr. Melvin!

I have a hard time believing that. The Pads tried to trade him at the deadline and now his name is getting tossed around at the winter meetings. Witrado's statement just doesn't make sense.

Correia has said he wants to stay in SD, so maybe he'll take less to do so.

why wait for him to get non-tendered? offer up a couple middle prospects, maybe katin and an a ball infielder for him. i would much rather give up a little and get him then have someone else get him first.
