other big market. How could I know? But when I see people question his

toughness or his psyche -- either in direct words on Twitter or,

infinitely more annoying, in read-between-the-lines quotes and stories

-- I guess they don't know him any better than I do.

Given all of the trade speculation surrounding Greinke and Garza, I think it would be great if the Royals and Rays would just trade them 1 for 1.

His new agents also happen to represent the other two most-discussed starters in trade chatter the last couple of weeks, Matt Garza of the Raysand Joe Blanton of the Phillies. Unlike those two, Greinke has a limited no-trade clause in his current contract that allows him to veto deals to 15 teams -- reportedly including the Yankees and Red Sox. But the Rangers are not on the list, and many expect them to at least inquire on Greinke.

EDIT #2: Greinke has added the Nationals to one of the 15 teams he refuses to be traded to, which is pretty huge for Brewers fans holding out hope that we can get him. Nationals were considered to be front runners, and they definitely have the pieces to acquire him. Nationals reportedly join the Yankees and Red Sox as the 3 known teams on the list of 15.

i'm taking Greinke's no-trade list with a grain of salt. i think it's being used more as a power chip in contract negotiations with whatever new team that tries to trade for him. then instead of merely being traded, he suddenly has to power to demand a hefty contract extension or else he'll just refuse to be traded to wherever.

 

no doubt DM made a last-chance pitch to KC using Lawrie, who was no doubt they player they most wanted from our system. hard to figure that DM is suddenly going to cave and meet their asking price, plus it's almost scary to think of what two top prospects he would have to include to replace Lawrie, who was our #1 prospect. i think DM tried, wouldn't meet their demands, and the whole thing is over now. especially with guys like Garza and Shelds (and no doubt a few pitchers we haven't considered), i don't see why DM should have to go crazy for Greinke when there are other options.

Agreed GAME05. This whole Greinke to Brewers idea has been basically dead for a while. Sounds like the Royals were demanding better prospects from the Blue Jays than what we could possibly offer. I hope Melvin is exploring a trade with the Rays or elsewhere.

Doug Melvin was quoted saying that teams can get around no-trade clauses and I believe he was asked that question in reference to the Greinke situation. No-trade clauses are a good negotiating tool. It also sounds like Zach Greinke will consider any team as long as he can get out of KC. I'm not going to rule the Brewers out till Greinke signs elsewhere.

Greinke is using that as leverage basically to get a long term deal. He is probably looking for something close to what Felix Hernandez got but for a year or two longer. I believe Greinke will not block a trade if there is a long term deal attached to the trade. So I think a long term extension of at least 5-years for $100m is what you are looking at to extending Greinke. I am not sure that would be a wise move by the Brewers to do that though you would be basically locking up the rotation for the next 4-years. This contract would be adding onto what Greinke will already be getting so the Brewers would have Greinke for a total of 7-years.

There is some chatter on twitter that the Brewers and Royals are talking again. Supposedly would include 3 players with big league experience. No names given but thinking Cain would be one.

He's still waiting on confirmation of the talks before putting out the names that he's been given. He does say that the deal would NOT involve Odorizzi or Heckathorn, but 3 guys with Major League experience.

 

This makes me wonder who it could be, and if they consider either Mark Rogers or Jeremy Jeffress to have Major League experience because of their callup last season. However, it's known the Royals want a middle-infielder in the package. Escobar, perhaps? I doubt we'd want to give up on him, but I could see it happening if Doug is serious about getting Greinke.

Jim Breen is a very good Brewers writer over at Bernies Crew. He used to post quite frequently over at sportsbubbler.com. He isn't one to say something unless he can back it up. I'm interested in what he find out.

If Melvin can pull this off and we still have Odorizzi and one of Jeffress/Rogers left in the system I say go all in. Even if we do have to extend him at 5/100 to get the NTC waived. I'd also have no problem throwing Escobar in if KC is high on him.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking. I think Melvin would be more willing to give Jeffress or Rogers than Braddock, to be honest, considering how valuable Braddock was last year. Now, in this scenario, I wonder if Melvin is really willing to create two holes (at SS and CF) in order to fill one hole (at SP). I mean, if we pull an Escobar/Cain/Jeffress or Rogers for Greinke deal, who plays SS, and can Gomez handle CF?

My guess would be Hart, Escobar, Braddock. Gamel goes to right field. We'd need a SS obviously. Parra hopefully can fill Braddock's role. Loser of Cappy/Narveson for the fifth rotation slot becomes our other lefty in the bullpen.

 

ETA: If they need a starter coming back, it'd have to be Narveson. I'd be very happy if he were one of the three big leaguers we send their way if we indeed have to send three their way.
