Trevor Hoffman claimed on waivers by White Sox?

Reports BrewerNation on Twitter. "Want to work out a trade for him. Villanueva cleared waivers. White Sox perhaps interested in him too."

 

Says the Red Sox also submitted a claim on Hoffman but White Sox have priority.

I would be shocked if the Brewers wanted to trade Hoffman, and even they did, I would be shocked if Hoffman would accept a trade to Chicago. According to Cot's, he has no-trade protection to a list of 25 teams. The odds of the ChiSox not being on that list are small.

Why would you be "shocked if the Brewers wanted to trade Hoffman?" They don't really need him at this point in the season. Likely if a trade was worked out, Melvin would talk to Hoffman and make sure he's OK with being traded. I assume he'd at lest entertain the idea of being dealt to a contender.

I know Trevor doesn't have an assignment bonus in his contract, but would it be legal for Melvin to work out a deal saying something like 'You go to the Sox, we'll give you $1,000,000"? Hoffman has about $2.3 million left, including his buyout, and he figures to have little on the field value to the Brewers at this point.

For better or worse, they seem to like his veteran influence on the rest of the pen. Also, they have the list of teams he doesn't want to be traded to. If the White Sox are on that list, why bother following through on it? It seems to me that Hoffman would just assume not be traded.

How do you possibly know this? He is a veteran player in the twilight of his career, and hasn't exactly won multiple World Series rings already. He might be fine with being traded to a contender and having the chance to pitch in October playoffs before his career wraps up. He'd only be there a few weeks anyway. It's not like he'd have to move his entire family and start all over.

I don't know this - that's why I said "it seems." It seems that way because of his lengthy no-trade list, his quick re-sign after the end of last season and how he dealt with being taken out of the closer's role earlier this year. He seems to genuinely like being here. Therefore, it seems to me that Hoffman would just assume not be traded.

 

I'd be happy to be wrong, though. We certainly don't need him.

I highly doubt if it will happen, but if I'm the Brewers, I'm not giving him away for nothing, and I'm only trading him if he wants to go to Chicago. Even then, if they don't want to give anything of value for him, let them sign Riske.

By being willing to take on these kinds of contracts, the Sox effectively are cutting off teams with lower priority (Minnesota, TB, NYY, Texas) from pulling off a waiver trade. Most of the time, we only hear rumors about which players clear waivers, and could therefore be traded to any team. Hoffman did not clear waivers; that's the business end of player trades in August.

 

(Ironically, I think the Brewers would rather get the ticket boost out of Hoffman going for save #600 in a Brewers uniform over a middling prospect. If he gets a quick 2 saves by the weekend, he may be gone sooner than expected.)

Its hard to blame one person for a crappy season, especially this one, but those blown saves early in the season certainly didn't help us.

Hoffman probably wouldn't get traded unless he signed off on it himself. So if he's game, the Brewers should move him.

Does this mean we could just give him to the ChiSox and they have to assume his contract and buyout? Why would we not do that, wouldnt that save us like $3 Mil. Does a no-trade clause allow you to block waiver pickups, because we dont have to trade him we could just give him up?

though hoffman can block most trades, he may not necessarily have a clause in his contract that can also block waiver claims to those same teams. if hoffman doesn't ok a trade to the WS, then there exists the possibility that he can't block a straight claim and the Brewers let him go just to save the money on the rest of his contract.

Yeah, there doesn't seem to be much steam behind this. In retrospect I should have started this in the Rumors/Proposals forum to begin with. I guess it's something to talk about, anyway.

Other than some notion of having #600 happen in Milwaukee and possibly being nice to a veteran I can't find a good reason not to just let him go if you can't work out a trade. We've got plenty of decent arms that we can look at and still field a watchable team, there is no long term value. Granted it would be nice to get a nugget, but take the money and run.

If the White Sox want him and no trade can be worked out, just let Hoffman go. Really, could they possibly get anything of value for him anyway? CV is a different story. He should have some value based on his age alone. Just my two cents.

actually, Hoffman's been very good for most of the year now. At this point I'd consider bringing him back next year, even if it's just as insurance should Axford struggle.
