Any interest in B J Upton?

I know he had been involved in the Garza trade talks, which we certainly won't be pursuing at this point, but I wonder if something isn't still possible there. We know the Rays wanted Gamel as a 1B option, so I wonder if a deal centered around Gamel and maybe a young reliever would interest the Rays.

Even 2009-2010 BJ Upton is better than Gomez by far, and 2007/2008 BJ Upton would be outstanding.

Upton had a nice rebound year in 2010 after a bad 2009.... I'd be thrilled to get him. But as trwi7 said, we're at the point where a deal would be pretty tough for the Brewers to make with what they have left. Of course I said that about Greinke too....

It'd be really tough to trade Gamel, as he's really the only internal option the Brewers have to replace Prince in 2012.

I don't think so. Can't imagine the Brewers are ready to expand the payroll much further...if they do it would more likely be for a SS. I don't see a reason for the Rays to deal Upton if they get no salary relief.

Hart could replace Prince.

I mention Gamel because there's apparent interest in him from the Ray's perspective, and we really don't seem to have any plan in mind to get the guy playing time.

I wonder if Upton can still play SS and 2B, if so I'm definitely interested in him. We can slot Upton as starting SS and Betancourt to the bench. Upton is still young and will be under team control for 2 years at least.

Edit: Our offense at SS will be upgraded with Upton.

But that's just shuffling the hole without a replacement from one position to another. We wouldn't have a corner OF to replace Hart....

Well, there has to be an external option for OF in 2012. Hart's not good in RF, and at the very least, he'd be a better target for the infielders than Fielder.

I'm not sold on Gamel, and clearly the organization isn't either.

I think Gamel has a place on this year's team. I could see sliding over Hart to center to get Gamel's lefty bat as one platoon and keeping Gomez in CF and Hart in right as the other platoon.

i like that idea, except hart has a hard time judging balls in right. him in center would not be good. a ball hit right at him would be scary. bring cam back or leave gomez out there. we need good defense now that we have a staff. i would trade gamel for upton in a heartbeat, if that happened we would have everything we wished Gomez could be.

If Melvin really has the guts he would try to get this guy. Upton in center and I'm thinking WS contender. We seem to be one guy short offensively

Gomez

Betancourt

LuCroy

Not sure how I feel about 6-7-8, oh yeah NOT VERY GOOD!! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Often times GM's are too cautious, yes he has a HUGE off-season and yes the Brewers are contenders. If he can do one more deal and find a good SS or CF then melvin will have pulled it off. Yes we have a great rotation but our everyday lineup has some concerns.

Maybe guts is the wrong word, I hope Melvin doesn't think the rotation is going to win the WS for us.

People really need to stop with talking about sliding Hart over to CF. It seems like sometimes people think that just because an outfielder has some speed, then that guy can play CF. Hart is already a below average corner outfielder, putting him in a premium defensive position like CF would make an already poor defensive team an atrocious defensive team, especially if Gamel was put in RF where he's still learning the position.

An outfield alignment of Braun in LF, Hart in CF, and Gamel in RF would have to easily be the worst defensive outfield in all of baseball. That would be added to an infield defense with now Betancourt at SS which likely will end up being one of the worst defensive infields in the league.

As for Upton, i really really wish we had the resources in talent/money to try and acquire him because he's blessed with incredible talents and BJ has also had extended stretches of brilliant and productive baseball in every facet of the game. This would maybe be the chance to steal a huge talent at a reasonable price and if he rebounded to have a year like 2007 or 2008, wow our team could be an absolute beast. Oh well, the resources are gone now, but went to the more pressing need of starting pitching.

I'm not advocating moving Hart to CF, but just wanted to point out that when Yount moved to the OF, he started in LF. But found it easier to judge balls from the CF perspective.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

I know people are going to laugh...but I've wondered if Braun would have an easier time in center field because of this reasoning.
