What a drop-off in experience compared to Tony LaRussa. That is going to be a really big change for that franchise.

Obviously, I hope it doesn't work out well.

That is fascinating, going from the evil genius of TLR, to a smart, but nonetheless, a rookie. Lots of guts in that move. I would have presumed they would go to someone with a tack record.

Well, that is what make being a fan interesting!

this is going to make it just slightly harder to root against them. not impossible by any means. but just slightly harder. guess now i only can't stand 25/26ths of the team (not including other coaches).

My gut reaction is that I hate it.....because I really like Matheny. But, it's good for him, and hopefully it leads to a long and arduous process of rebuilding after Al takes his money and runs far, far away.

Finally the Cards have a classy manager.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Heyman and Buster, etc. all say he's a great guy. He was a fine Brewer, and its especially nice to see that he has recovered from his concussions.

This looks like a really good hire.

That adds a unique twist to the Brewer/Cardinal rivalry. Didn't see that coming at all.

The real question is whether he will bean-b.. ah, pitch inside to opposing teams in order to protect Albert. Or whether Albert comes back at all...

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

Here's hoping that Matheny does not maintain a cult-like atmosphere in the STL clubhouse. That alone would be an improvement. Components of the TLR era just didn't seem healthy to me.

Also, pitching coach Julian Tavarez sounds awesome, as long as it's for another team. He is on the list of top 100 MLB HBP pitchers, which if the TLR cult continues, would fit hand-in-glove. Get it? Hand in glove?

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.
