re: Knocked Up

It's currently getting a 92% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes.

By way of comparison, Borat got a 91%.

I think I'll enjoy it.

Why can't a movie as good as say.... "Buffalo '66" come out this summer?

Between Shrek, Spiderman and Pirates, I think I want to puke.

Are any of those 3 overhyped, over exposed movies any good? I saw Spider Man and it's by far the worst one yet.

Now you're talking my language. Vincent Gallo is the man. He's starring in a film called "Oliviero Rising" that's supposed to be out this year. That's his first real film since "Brown Bunny" (which probably can't be discussed here).

I just saw that recently via Netflix.Always nice to see a suprisingly good movie that i hadn't even heard of until a friend told me to check it out.

Did you see Red Road? There are a ton of great movies coming out this summer, you just won't see any of them at a megaplex, which has been true for about the past two years.

Another summer keeper? Crazy Love

Words to live by.

You converting to the Pro-Apatow wing? I mean, if you can abandon Paul Feig what's to stop you from ditching the illustrious Charles de Fermaint?

Yeah, I mentioned that earlier in the thread. I absolutely can't wait to see it. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to wait, because I'm not going to see it until it hits DVD (which has been happening pretty quickly with docs lately).

Ok, the family and myself went to see Pirates 3 today, and after expecting to be disappointed by everyone saying it was overarching, confusing, and didn't resolve any storylines, I was mildly surprised.

Only confusing if you severely don't pay attention. Heck, my 12 year old kid got it, and he's as squirrely as they come at movie theaters. Most of everything got wrapped up, and the stuff that didn't........eh, who cares?

That Pirates movie is 5+ hours?

You're kidding me.

I was referring to 2 and 3 combined, as I don't think either is a complete movie. It's not the worst pair of sequels I've ever seen, but it sure looks like reports that they started filming without a finished script are true.

I wouldn't say that it's impossible to follow, only that the complications don't have much/any emotional weight to them or payoffs.

I agree with that. Other than Will and Elizabeth's story line, everyone else is pretty much left unresolved. Not that that's a bad thing, necessarily. Bloom and Knightly said they were done, but Depp said he'd be open to coming back. Haven't heard anything about Geoffrey Rush. Also, there's been rumors of a prequel, which I would hate. I'm not a fan of prequels. Movies in general are fairly predictable, and nothing's more predictable than a show in which you've already seen the final act.

On a side note, I think I'm going to see Hot Fuzz later this week.

Never heard of Katherine Heigl before this flick, but you are in luck - there is 129 minutes of her! If you liked Virgin you will enjoy this one.

The wife and I went this weekend at J.Creek and it was the best $6/ea we spent all weekend http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I really got into Batman Begins. I was also pretty entertained by the new Star Wars, especially Episode 3.

Offhand I can't really think of any other big prequels.

Did you see Unaccompanied Minors? For that matter did anybody? And that's with Ira Glass pushing it even.

That said I will always take ANYBODY over a Minnesotan (Apatow).

Well with the possible exception of Joel Hodgson, that guy's money.

No, I'm still reeling from the Little Miss Sunshine recommendation. I like Steve Carell MORE than the next guy, but really I had already seen National Lampoon's Vacation and even Chevy Chase is a better actor than Greg Kinnear.

Viva Steve Moss!!!

Oh that doesn't even merit a response and hadn't you got the memo? Ford is the flavor of the minute.

I did like Batman Begins. It was a fresh take on a series that had gotten beyond stale.

The new Star Wars stuff was pure crap. (IMO of course).

I saw Rush Hour 3 on Friday. It was good, but it wasn't as good as the first 2. It's always a good sign when a 90 minute movie feels like it is over in about 5 minutes. It went that fast.

The interrogation and dojo scenes were very funny. My main problem was that many, and I mean many, of Chris Tucker's one-liners fell completely flat.

I can't wait until this Friday when Superbad opens.

I never ever go to the movie theater, but Superbad might send me to the box office for a record THIRD TIME this summer. Once for Transformers (went with friends who were hell-bent, actually not that bad) ... once for The Simpsons (favorite TV Show since forever, a no-brainer) ... and now -- possibly -- a third time for Superbad (George Michael from Arrested Development *and* Guy from Campus Ladies?? gotta be good).

That's the truth, my dislike for the new three turned me off from the old three. Lord of the Rings it is.

Has anyone seen Hot Fuzz yet? I liked Shaun of the Dead so I'm thinking I might just pick up Hot Fuzz without having seen it instead of renting it...

I saw Bourne Ultimatium last week. I enjoyed it but I think I could have waited for the rental. Some really cool visuals and some great fight and chase choreography, but the plot was kind of thin (I mean it was an action film after all).

I admit, Superbad does look to be just in poor taste enough to make lots of folks go who normally would not, not to mention the teens who go to 1-2 movies every week.

Hot Fuzz is great. Especially if you love dumb action movies.

I'm behind on what I've wanted to see this Summer. I'll just have to catch up over the winter. I might manage to see Stardust before it quickly vanishes from theaters. That's probably it though.

There really hasn't been anything that I'd characterize as a surprise hit this summer. Maybe Superbad will qualify, but everything else seems to be performing to expectations. 300 is probably still the surprise hit of the year.

From what I've seen:

Best Summer Film: Ratatouille

Best Performance: Imelda Staunton as Delores Umbridge in Harry Potter

I enjoyed Bourne Ultimatum. Homer is right that the plot is a little thin, but I thought they tied all three movies together nicely, and they actually had a little reference to the Bourne books in this movie as well.

I really enjoyed Bourne Ultimatum when I caught it at the Majestic opening weekend.

My only complaints with the plot, is that the setup felt like a bit more of the same, and that I didn't like the setup for the incident in Tangiers(?) with the CIA computer.

(I think that's about as much description I can provide while remaining non-descript.)

...well, that, and the dialog of the phone call with Landy changed from the end of Supremacy (which I watched again on Sunday).

Nobody crashes a car like Jason Bourne.

(Just to bring it up....anyone else find themselves watching significantly more movies in the theater this year than in previous summers? I went to at least 6...and I'm probably forgetting another one or two.)

I just feel like mentioning that LAWRENCE OF ARABIA is coming to the Times this weekend. It's a film that's very rewarding to see on the big screen. Heck, it defines the word epic.
