clean off the this year reclamation guys so we can bring in next year reclamation guys.
Jeez, if that's the plan just hand Erceg 3B and Gatewood/Spanberger can battle for 1B. :ohwell

I am actually pretty intrigued with Spanberger as an option at 1B in 2021.
I've followed young Mr. Gatewood since he was drafted, I thought he had turned the corner in 2018 until that knee injury derailed him and 2019 was a rather uninspiring return. I see he's a free agent this year, I sincerely hope that the team resigns him. In all honesty, I would rather see the Spanbergers, Gatewoods, Ercegs, and Rays given a shot if the plan is just to sign vets like last year. At the very least, we see what we got in them and it either works or doesn't.

Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but leaving him off the 60-man player pool this summer made me less hopeful they see him as an option at the major league level anytime soon.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I think you'd be really disappointed if that actually came to pass. Erceg, Gatewood and Ray have trouble with AAA pitching and even AA pitching. I suppose Ray will get another chance being a Top 5 draft pick. But as an advanced college player still spinning his wheels in the minors coming up on 5 years after he was drafted, it doesn't look good. Gatewood and Erceg just don't profile as major league players anymore at this point.

From a competition standpoint the team would actually be better off with a band aid veteran free agent than using young homegrown players without major league ability.

I’m sorry, but bring on the retreads. Erceg looks more like the next Nick Ramirez than the third baseman of the future. I wouldn’t mind bringing Gatewood back on a minor league deal because he does have upside and the Brewers are probably going to need to sign 8 or so bats just to fill out the upper minors, but putting him in the big leagues right now probably decreases the likelihood he would eventually become a good big leaguer. And while I think Spanberger might end up being Garrett Cooper, he had a .700 OPS in 2019 at AA. Let him prove he is ready. Going with Mathias over a Sogard type? Sure. Going with guys who haven’t had success in the upper minors just because a couple of cheap veterans didn’t work this year? No thank you.

Erceg hit 180/245/202 in 98 PAs with the Sugar Land Lightning Sloths of the Constellation Energy League in 2020.
I'm quite familiar with Mr. Erceg as well, he was another I kept close eye on. Hate to say he has been a disappointment, but has not lived up to expectations. It would seem he would string together a week of multi hit games and then drop off the map for the next three. With such a hole at 3B, I'd like to see him get some one on one help from anybody before the team cuts ties with him.

Erceg was quite the prep pitcher, and did log some solid innings as a reliever at Cal. I mean, if he's never going to make it as a bat, it would be nice to get something out of him.

I'm pretty confident you just made all of that up.

Sad to say, but it's true! :(

Yup. According to Baseball Ref. he played with the mighty Lightning Sloths in 2020. Besides his horrible BA, he also struck out 24 times in his 98 PAs. Time to cut this guy loose.

Haha. I had to type that whole thing out precisely because of how ridiculous it all is.

But hey, you never know, I feel like I remember the Indians picking up a pitcher out of the California Penal League some years ago that pitched them right into the playoffs.

Especially given that the current list of likely backup catchers for the minor league teams next year is probably a better prospect group than the lists of starting first and third basemen.

the luke maile signing is official.

i cannot recall if the brewers have ever had six catchers on their 40-man roster (at least twice in this century prior to adding mario feliciano, they've carried five).

the roster is at 36 players.

I remember when we had 4 catchers on the 24 man roster. Nilsson, Surhoff, Joe Oliver, Matheny. With Surhoff and Nilsson as starting OFs. Not sure if they had any other Catchers on the 40 man roster. Man that was an rough year to be a fan.

There was a year somewhere in that same time frame when we kept having catchers get hurt. Bring in Dave Valle? Sure, and he starts hitting okay... and very quickly gets hurt... So we go get another. Rinse & repeat. It was surreal!

Weird thing with that is that Nilsson, Surhoff, and Oliver were all fine offensively. In fact, the first two were outstanding. Those bad teams were all about pitching. When Ricky Bones, Scott Karl, Cal Eldred (post 1993), etc are your top pitchers, you're in trouble. At least they made an effort when they signed Ben McDonald before his arm gave out

Matheny was always considered good defensively, but it took a long time before he became a competent major league hitter. It seemed for a while early on that the thing Garner/etc. liked best about Matheny was him taking down Willie Wilson in a spring training game when Wilson charged the mound. I'm glad he ended up having a good MLB career -- except that it came with the Cardinals.

Back then they also had Mike Stefanski as a prospect, but Matheny ended up ahead of him & Stefanski never earned a shot at the bigs.
